And another thing -- if you are trying to connect to the beam without a good connection point, use Simpson (or equiv) hardware. Screws are preferable, imo, if they are specced for shear, NOT drywall screws. Lots of advice given, most of it very good, but i want your endeavors to succed magnificently, having done miles and miles of framing, trusses, and everything from foundations to finish work, and later to inspect for code compliance. So, all the best, you kids! Love what you're doing!!🎯🛎️

Tim from Canada attention, Courtney and Riley. You were looking for a way to make support platform the easiest way to do this is to get an IBC tote… take the plastic part out this way you still have the cage.. with the cage you should be able to lift it with your skid steer…. this is also the best way if you were looking for a way to change lights in high places or are you just need an extra. platform/// 1 take ABC tote…/ 2 take the plastic container out of IBC tote….////3 no, you have a cage a platform you can use for anything to do with heights, and it will fit on your skid steer or tractor with forks

I am not the slightest bit surprised that Courtney did so well with the trusses. She is not the first I have seen, whose steady and reaction free hand, controls that excavator as the device to be tamed that it is. She may not be the first whose mastery of her skill set it perfect, but on those rough and ready big machines she has the finesse to just ensure that the right things happen, at the right time. That said, well done for getting the project rolling along so well, others have queried the water proofing between the exterior and those containers. I agree it is a great idea to ensure that any water, snow, or ice gets shed straight away from both the structure and the tops of those containers and not allowed to stand near what are vital structural parts.

Smooth operator on the Xcavator. Nicely done! I guess I'm not understanding the design. The rain and snow will run off the roof onto the top of the containers. But the bolt holes in the container are not sealed. A plan is merely a starting point. And I don't say that lightly, since I plan everything to the last detail. But once work starts, the work is the reality. Just do it, and don't worry about meeting some schedule.

I agree with all of the comments regarding those rather small nuts and bolts on those roof supports. Those shipping containers are made of thin steel, it’s only the corrugations that give them any strength. So they need reinforcement. Soon before it gets windy!

@AmbitionStrikes, Riley, if it were me, I would attach hurricane straps from the trusses to the pony walls. You’ll be very surprised by how a mildly strong wind can lift a roof, and you really don’t want the hassle of repairing a possibly wind-damaged roof. Simpson hurricane straps are an inexpensive ‘piece-of-mind’ insurance. I would also use 2-20’x1/4”x4” steel flat bar, per pony wall, as strapping inside the container as an additional strap anchor to hold the pony walls to the container.

Your 'errors' have recovered so that they do look 'pretty'!!! You mentioned an open end building? I think you should consider sealing one end and putting in doors of sometype at the other. Maybe doors at both ends. I think that it should be enclosed. Your equipment and knowledge you have, the parts would be all the real cost to doing that. You two just amaze me. You should be adding additional beams out to the sides of your containers and extending your roof so the snow doesn’t build up and slides off.
@Theswaman87 Жыл бұрын
I love the concept! I have a few things you might want to consider. The screws up into the studs through the bottom plate are good, but they’re going into end grain, which weakens the connection. Consider Simpson hurricane ties across the stud/plate connections. As a rule of thumb, cantilevered beams should go into the building twice as far as the cantilever to prevent uplift. Yours don’t appear to do that so I would reinforce the connection at the interior end. Third, if you’re not extending the tails of the trusses down to the containers, at least brace it similarly so that the whole roof can’t blow side to side. Can’t wait to see how it turns out, and I love the channel!

And "YAY" #2 is a storage area for all the equipment to get it out of the weather. OSHA may be cringing, but you guys rock improvisation construction!!! One question... Are you going to use any sort of hurricane tie to further protect against the lifting force of the wind since that is an open bay roofed area? Might be a good idea.

I put up a similar structure but in steel. I cut and joined 10" x 4" RSJ's and joined at peak with plates. Trusses were 44' long. They cantilevered and flew right past outside of containers. We didnt want water running down walls and wanted to keep containers "cool". I supported trusses with a 5' long 4" x 4" box section leg with a base plate pre drilled for large bolts. They landed on a pre tapped block that I welded on to edge of container, eight in all. I only had a larger mini tractor to use. Before I started I made a work platform with sliding handrails to give me access and safety. I was able to put my welder on platform and work of platform. Access was via ladder resting on platform. I made a sky hook (pole with a wee leg) mounted of loader bucket to give extra height that allowed me to hang trusses to position over landing blocks. Worked a treat. You could easily make a work platform that sat over your skid steer forks. The bit you would stand on would be about 3' above fork level. That way you get your height. Maybe a winter project. 😢 problem is getting like of welder on platform, mine was heavy. Yes, it's not self leveling but gives you height, a platform to work off, somewhere to put your gear, screws etc and safety.

Very creative build design and Courtney is a great Operator. Can you explain how you fortified the connection points to the container roof tops? When the roof is done, the wind could fly off and fly away from the containers like a wing. A possible solution would be to place longer bolts and use steel plate to sandwich upward from inside the container roof to secure roof. Just a suggestion.

LOve everything you guys do. Just a thought, but leaving both sides open with snow, wind, and God knows what else can go crawling through there, how about framing out both ends with 2x4's or even better yet 2x6, or a combination thereof, and then putting up metal siding on both ends, and install a large sliding barn door on the one end. So your heavy equipment can easily go in and out. Then how about a wood stove. I know of a popular channel that did a 2800 sq ft pole barn, and inserted a heated floor network, and now never even use it, or even installed the boiler for it, because the one medium sized woodstove keep the entire building warm. Having to clear wind drift snow off of the floor and the equipment will eventually become more work that it will to cap off the ends. And, oh yeah, you could put a single doorway on each end for easy access. Doors aren't expensive. Just my thoughts. Okay, okay you ten add an electrical line from the solar container to give you even more fun. TV's are optional. With containers on both sides the possibilities become endless. When we were kids we would go out in the woods and build a fort, and then play in it. You guys are getting to do that now, and enjoy it all the more.

I need to applaud Courtney for obviously telling Riley to put on a safety harness. Lol. Looking great, but on a serious note, I would STRONGLY recommend that you add another base board where the roof support walls attach to the containers and at least DOUBLE the amount of bolts ( larger grade 8 structural at least with a backing plate on the inside). I know that this sounds like overkill, but the winter load and the wind will be very dangerous otherwise. Definitely not trying to be a downer, you both do fantastic work. I’m strictly speaking from experience as a builder. LOVE THE VIDEO 👍👍

The roof you are creating will become a giant sail. The attachment bolts from the pony wall to the top of the container appear very vulnerable to wind uplift. There is very little surface area of the bolt heads/nuts. Consider some additional connectors like a Simpson Strong Tie connector.

For a work platform. Use an IBC tote cage. Put plywood on the floor and 1 wall. The playwood on the wall will allow you to attach racks, totes, tubs, tool holders etc. This is very nice for holding screws, bolts etc. Add two chains with quick clips so you can secure the cage to the equipment and it cannot be dumped off. Then you have a dedicated safe man lift whenever you nee to work high. You can also put a 2x8 or 2x10 on the top of a rails as a work table platform to set things down. It works very well, will keep you much safer than the sketchy stuff touring doing, will make your work so much easier and is a very easy project to make.

What I like about using screws as opposed to nails is that if you make a mistake and need to reposition lumber your not fighting with prying or pulling out nails.
