This T case is unique to the 2002 and I think 2001 4 runner. Your trying to mesh two spinny parts together. They have to be turned just right to seat them together. Put the trans into drive and let creep forward at idle while u gently ride the brake pedal. Push the AWD button. Let the the dash board light blink 3 or 4 times. Without stopping Slip your transmission into nuetral and it should engage. Still got the light blinking? then repeat the process. Sometimes it takes a couple trys. Once the AWD is engaged. Repeat the process to engage the center dif lock button on dash. A locked center. Dif transforms your AWD into 4x4. The AWD system works great and it's all you'll need on the street and light trail use. If you don't understand what you can damage by using the center dif lock then do yourself a favor and leave that button alone till you do understand. Once your AWD is engaged are you expecting weeks or months of bad roads? Just leave it engaged till conditions improve. Go practice engagement of AWD and Center dif lock on a gravel park lot or grass. I like to exercise the engagement of both once a week to keep them functioning properly. At least once a month take it a step further and slip the t case into low and drive it 50ft or 60ft so every thing gets a nice layer of lube on components..

Carlos, Thank you so much for this tutorial!! I also have a 2005 4Runner. The area I live, I rarely have to use 4 wheel drive. Our Meteorologists missed this forecast for Christmas Day, today. Putting in 4wd is tricky when you already stuck. The problem experienced was being on a hill with 6 inches of snow. At the time I pushed the 4wd button but stayed blinking. I guess the idea is to be in 4wd before you get stuck. Thank you for the info on the center lock feature. I will never be using it.

A 4 wheel drive vehicle sends equal amounts of power to each wheel via a locked transfer case sending 50% of the power to the front and 50% to the rear. It is ONLY technically 4 wheel drive if the front and rear differentials are locked and all 4 wheels are moving the same speed. If your transfer case is in 4wd mode and your differentials are unlocked or open you are technically 2wd. If your transfer case is in 2wd mode and your rear differential is locked, this is also 2wd. If the transfer case is in 2wd and your rear differential is open than this would technically be 1 wheel drive. Example... 1 tire on ice the other tire on dry road, you hit the gas and dont go anywhere because all the power is going to the tire that is spinning on the ice. Awd allows for different wheel speeds on pavement, something like trying to make a U turn on pavement... awd would allow for that to happen trouble free where if you were in 4wd differentials locked or not you would experience a hopping due to the drive line binding.

So it has like a limited slip transfercase, when you hit the 4WD button? Then it's fully locked when you hit the center diff lock button? So it essentially has 2wd, Awd H, L, and 4WD H, L?
@MysteriousSystems4 жыл бұрын
well, kinda. it technically has 2wd, awd (h) and 4wd (h, l). as soon as you put it into low range, it automatically locks the center dif. so 2wd, awd for say needing 4wd, but some places still have dry pavement and you need to turn, 4wd for more traction and 4wd low for most

Can you get new video for how to shift button 4wd on low range and center diff lock thank you very much we can appericate it
@kirwankars85974 жыл бұрын
I got you. What he didn't really explain there was when you push the 4 wheel drive button on the side of the shifter that actually engages full time 4 wheel drive or "all wheel drive" In that mode you can drive on any surface, any day of the year. But, when you push the button to the left of the steering wheel that is the center differential lock button. When you have that button pressed that is the fully engaged 4 wheel drive that you can only use on snow sand or mud. That is when you get maximum traction.

How does center diff lock affect performance? Manual says what it can do when offroading but it doesn't specifically say what changes in the car to make it better. I have a 2002 4wd stock 4runner.
@perecarl126 жыл бұрын
full-time 4WD is able to operate safely on the road with its center differential unlocked. Using the center lock option allows better handling on loose terrain by locking the differential.
@natelilly51706 жыл бұрын
Carlos is correct. To add on though, when the center diff IS NOT locked (only the 4 tires are lit up green) it’s an All wheel drive system kinda like a Subaru. When the center diff is locked (all 4 tires are green AND the center icon is lit up orange) it’s a true 4x4 system meaning the power is split 50/50 to front and rear axels all the time. Only lock to center diff in bad conditions where the tires are spinning at times.

I have an automatic 2000, and when I take it out of 4WD, it does the flashing thing. It won't go back into 2WD unless certain things happen, and I have not discovered what those things are definitively. It seems to vary case to case of what allows the 4WD to disengage. Does anyone know what the system to that is?
@LiLHarOak6 жыл бұрын
I think it has something to do with the gear shift itself. Not the “PRND2L” but the “H2-H4-N-L4” pictured differently then mine, but same knobby deal at 3:22 on the left. I always pull that thing strait down once my car has been started and before I put it in drive. It might “flash” as mentioned above but I don’t have to push any of the other buttons at all and on my dash board the tires are green and the center button is orange which means everything is “engaged?” I don’t know, works for me, has anyways on my 2000 4Runner for about 8 winters now!

I believe that's your "diff" lock". Not all 4x4's have that feature. Flashing means it's off & only 1 front wheel & 1 rear wheel, the other 2 can slip. With "diff lock" engaged both the rear wheels & at least 1 if not both front wheels will turn because believe it or not 4 wheel drive only drives 1 front & 1 rear, the other 2 can slip unless you have "diff lock" or a posi-traction differential
