I'm Dr. Andersen, a psychiatrist, and the Chief Medical Officer of a behavioral health hospital in the Seattle area,. I specialize in using functional brain imaging for complex psychiatric treatment. Dr. Cody is one of the few psychiatrists I know who is both well versed in traditional psychiatry, but is also forward thinking and aware of evolving neuroscience and technology. He is talented and definitely ahead of mainstream psychiatry in his willingness to cover these topics. His KZbin channel is performing an important function for the profession by highlighting the latest advancements that will soon revolutionize mental health treatment. At this point, unfortunately, I believe mainstream psychiatry will be blindsided and unprepared for the rapid advancements in neuroscience. This channel does a great job in highlighting some of the individuals and technologies that are sure to bring mental health treatment (and related fields) to the next level. Great job Cody! I will definitely be pointing more medical and mental health professionals to your channel for educational purposes.

Incredible technology. As someone previously studying pharmacodynamics, I wonder how this technology could be applied to nootropic or psychedelic research.

I don't think it would do all that. The bold signal is an indirect meassure of blood flow and (assumed, and yes verified) energy use in the brain. It lags actual neural activation by several seconds. Experiments have to be done in long block like do this task for 30 seconds. Now stop for 20, etc. fNIRS doesn't go that deep. The deeper it goes the more it looses spatial resolution. It can't look at sub corticle structures like the amygdala or even deep corticle structures like the insula or the auditory cortex.

I've got a B.S. degree in neuroscience. I've had an intro to fMRI course. we used open source software (fsleyes) to analyze open source fMRI datasets. It looks like the Kernel is using something home grown for software. Here are my questions: What is the spatial and temporal resolution of the device? How do they keep motion of the skin down as the device shifts? Are output files standard? Can they be imported into open source software? How deep does this fNIRS unit go? fNIRS doesn't go very deep to sub corticle structures like the amygdala for instance.

Just started becoming aware of this. Can’t very recent videos. It would be cool get one of these tethered to a VR headrest and Unity. I’d also love to see a study of someone learning to sing.

Meditation doesn't need much assistance, if any. I do use a Muse S, but I realize now that proper meditation is achieved more from relaxed state of mind that is capable of letting go of thinking than from feedback from a device. Anyone who has done a weekend meditation retreat, or gone fishing, has likely experienced that peaceful clarity of mind.

@@drmtwr it's often misrepresented that one needs to clear the mind in able to meditate, in fact it's quite the opposite. The goal is to cultivate sati or mindfulness/concentration, which is just watching the thoughts and sense-impingements arising and ceasing. Trying to suppress thoughts from arising entirely is guaranteed to be a losing battle.

Very cool. Thanks Cody. Would be interesting to hear you discussing the ethical implications of more and more people using BCIs at home and perhaps not exactly knowing what part of their EEG they share with the companies via apps connected to the internet. Do you think there are companies who are already thinking about monetising personal brain data for instance in a similar way to how Facebook and other Big Tech has been monetising data? Cheers, k

What if they could use the live feed back to boost the brains ability to learn like lets say they could synchronize what you are reading or looking at for reactions to the parts of the brain that's better suited for learning then with lights, sounds and smells they could trigger a bigger faster data flow maybe with a post nootropic cocktail. I'd volunteer if I could do it from home! :p

Great Video, great technology emerging. There should be more of these devices collecting e.g. data from neurotypical people vs people in the (autistic) spectrum. That would further scientific understanding, and, from there, mutual understanding of these two groups of people.

@@CodyRallMD is there somewhere in the UK I can plug into this? I have Narcolepsy. Already had EEG's attached all over my body during the sleep study, but I couldn't help but feel they are missing a HUGE piece of the puzzle. Now they want me on stimulants, which I feel misses the point entirely. I feel like trying to counteract narcolepsy is a bad idea, and what we should really be doing is making the most of the our unique ability to consciously explore the dream world on command. Just as we should be playing to the strengths of people with Autism, and things of that nature, and help structure a society where neurodivergent people can use their talents rather than be defined by their inabilities. I have always been interested in MAPPING the world we tap into in REM sleep, since I have an intimate relationship with that state of mind. I know it's possible for dream-to-wake communication already (through eye movements), but this BCI would take it to another level. I can simulate experiences in REM sleep, and take neural pathways unrestricted by the typical constraints and run experiments against it. I can imagine so many experimental designs based on being able to "see" where I am, feed sensory data, measure responses. Measuring blood-flow makes much more sense than measuring brainwaves or having high-res but very localized brain-chips, so this is really exciting. My dream: Imagine if somebody like me could operate largely from within the dream space from where I spend almost half my life. Now add direct access to the outside world through my brain. There's definitely some interesting territory to be explored here, and I'd love to contribute to the science on this.

I am sure it can show some brain blood oxygen levels on the surface, but I am very skeptical that these lasers and sensors could be even remotely close to the accuracy of functional MRI.

Hi Cody, I heard another company which will release a new product. The company is called System2 Neurotechnology and their device is a combination of EEG + fNIRS. Can you once again become our voice and hand and contact them about their product ? I hardly believe it'll be a consumer device. But there is a tiny bit of hope since one of the founders comes from Muse team.
