I like the way you kept the experiment real world by not sticking it in a vice and also using a battery grinder not a AC / mains one. Awesome.

It should have at least been mounted to a pole or other place since the ground provides a solid surface on which to press against while grinding. That's not a real-world scenario since the lock will be hanging free from the wheel and post to which it's attached. That makes it much harder to keep the blade straight without snapping it. Although I absolutely agree that all tests need to be done with a battery-powered grinder and never an AC one since they have full power 100% of the time, and provide more torque and power. It seems like a great lock. If I had a really expensive ebike or chopper, I'd use TWO of them. It'd just not be worth the time and effort to take both off. The company should give a discount for a package of 2. At time of 10:00 watch closely and you can see the cutting disk being ground away. Very impressive lock.

The top three lame smug YT bike security comments: 1) LPL will pick it in 20 seconds! 2) They’ll just cut the frame! 3) They’ll just cut the rack! Real-world rebuttal: 1) Thieves don’t pick locks. 2) When thieves choose expensive bikes, why destroy the most expensive part? And when they don’t care if the bike’s $800 or $5,000, they’re intending to dump it quickly for $100 to buy drugs. They can’t unload a destroyed bike quickly on the next street corner. 3) Yes, racks can be cut, but it’s rare. Thieves are lazy opportunists and will move on to easier targets. Plus, if your bike is locked most effectively with front wheel off and next to the rear wheel, cutting the rack is of no use - the bike is still completely unrideable. This also defeats #2 above. Win-win! There are always exceptions. But my experience In avoiding theft of very nice bikes over 40 years says using the best locks & your smarts will put the odds in your favor. Don’t lock a bicycle up outside over night. Use GPS trackers. Record your serial number & register your bike. Buy insurance as a last resort to attenuate your exposure. If you have 3 or more $3,000+ bikes, the responsible thing to do is get insurance. But Hiplok gets an A+ in my book for making a HUGE step forward to thwart bike thieves. Kudos!! ------- Advice: Use any quality lock SMARTLY! Don’t just lazily put it through one wheel spoke like in the video. This WILL encourage a thief to destroy your moto’s front wheel to steal the whole bike. Go through the rim instead. Or more than one spoke AND the rotor. Grasp as much with the lock as you can. Go through the most stout thing you can. It annoys me to see lock companies advertise people casually (& lazily) locking a bicycle through the frame top tube only. Doing this does encourage thieves to cut your frame! Why are lock makers marketing a security product in a way that more easily enables someone to defeat the sole purpose of their product? (I think it’s to sell convenience, IMHO.) Make what you lock through on your bike stout AND expensive. Not a single easy-to-cut part like one aluminum spoke of a mag or aluminum wheel. Anyway, NEVER use a quality bike lock only on a thin bicycle frame tube. Lock through the head tube (has a steerer tube inside), the seat tube, or even better, through the rear wheel & tire between the seat & chain stays. Even better if your front wheel is included on the other side of the rack or pole. That locks both wheels AND frame with ONE lock. The Hiplok D1000 can do this with almost all road bikes & mountain bikes with narrower street tires. Take the time to utilize your lock to its fullest advantage and thieves will move on.

Thank you for showing me this video. I’ve watched many videos of people trying to get into these locks. I have succeeded within seconds but you are the only one that has done it with the rubber on the metal and a battery operated angle grinder. I am definitely can I buy one of these or two of these locks, as I believe that the thieves not going to bring any more than two discs, and if they have for people to angle grinders I’m sure they are gonna get a bit nervous and walk away and even if they did get through the first bit of metal, they would need to cut it a second time because of the shape of the lock you cannot turn or twist the metal material as it is square

The sad thing is that thieves in case of unsuccessful attempts also tend to release their frustration on damaging the bike in the end. Heard of destroyed wheels, spokes, frames, ... best bike lock I ever saw was a smoke-bomb under the saddle, released when bike moved away. Other option, use quick links and a waxed chain. Take chain away, thief can't ride away and your hands stay clean when adding/removing chain

@TheGtspider
@TheGtspider 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, yes I too have thought about that, and don,t really know an answer. However I would assume if the thief knows its a d1000 and cuts the metal poles the bike is secured to, which are the usual, it would be normally 2 cuts anyway, and then they could not ride the bike away as it still has the d1000 on it locked to frame and wheel hopefully. So would have to carry it away or put it in a van, then they would still have to remove the D1000 when at there place which would probaly not be worth their while. Makes me wonder if an acetelyne torch would go through a D 1000. Regards Graham Tarling

Well, you get through everything, but depends on time and effort. With an AC powered angle grinder and the bike locked into clamps, it takes about 5 discs and 20+ min. Not sure if this is the effort a thief can / wants to put in, as also the lock will not be hold into position and usually no AC is available on bike racks. Bike thieves give it up to 3 min. until the lock has to be open. So that lock definitely would resist a 3 min. attack. It has been opened in under 1 minute however, but this was using a professional plasma-cutter. So if you're a bike thief running around with that sort of equipment, good on you.

This is rare. Probably left the bike out overnight in the worst part of town. Lots of details missing in this post. Provide more, or you’re just throwing out oft-repeated baloney. I heard all about liquid nitrogen being used to break locks in the 1980’s. Everyone was freaked out. But then the campus cops (at the #2 worst location in the US for bike theft at the time AND the #1 chemistry university in the world - in other words, LOTS of liquid N2 available) said, “Thieves don’t steal bikes this way!” Urban myth debunked by factual statistics. But it persisted for years. Remember the “bump key” scare of about 10 years ago? I do. Everyone was freaking out about it. The media reporting, “That $50 Schlage lock on your front door is USELESS!!!” So a BUNCH of people spent hundreds or thousands of dollars to have locksmiths upgrade their home locks with Safeco or Medeco “bump proof” locks. But what about the 20 flimsy 1/8” window panes all around your house?!!!! If someone REALLY wants into your house, they’ll get in (I could Sawzall through a wall in about five minutes, rendering bump key & bullet proof windows useless)! OMG, we’re gonna die! All the media hype & scare tactics quickly died & was forgotten. So follow sound security advice & dont fall for smug potshots from the KZbin peanut gallery!

Try using the correct cutting disc. That's for stainless steel only. It'll only cut soft metals. No chance against any hardened steel You first mistake was using the grinder and discs the lock manufacturer sent you. There's a reason they chose those ones. "inox" discs are for stainless steel. The aluminium ladder you cut through is the kind of hardness those discs are designed for.

Nope. 220V grinder went through a BUNCH of discs and took 10 minutes to cut ONE side. Gotta cut the other side to get the lock off to steal the thing in question! So 20 minutes, 10 cutting discs & a lot of noise. That’s pretty damn stout! I’ll take one! (I bought two actually.) But not according to you. You “heard” it could be cut “with a bigger/better/higher quality/ blah, blah, blah” tool, so forget it. Here, I’ll save you the effort: A plasma cutter defeated the D1000 in 10 seconds. 10 seconds! So the lock is useless, Hiplok is a fraud, and people should just give up. Leave your bike unlocked because it will just be stolen in seconds anyway. Better yet, just ride on over to the nearest hive of thieves and hand ‘em your bike and get the suspense over with! There, problem solved!

Stop putting a ton of pressure on the disks and intentionally stalling out the grinders! This seems like a nice BS test where he intentionally makes it fail.

It’s no coincidence that bike theft is high in the UK & United States. Two countries with decades of growing wealth & income inequality. Good the UK just narrowly missed making it much worse with the proposed but defeated tax cut for the wealthy. (Ironically tax cuts always cost those who voted for them more taxes! My city keeps asking for more and more properly tax assessments. Despite the 2017 corporate tax cuts just passed!) The ACTUAL way to prevent bike theft & crime in general is to make legitimate work more lucrative than bike theft & crime. This is the simple concept of “market forces.” The right LOVE market forces when they benefit the rich. But not so much the rest of us. They suspend market forces when convenient: bringing in foreign workers to pick the harvest at poverty wages. And when that fails, they just build more prisons! (Paid for by REGRESSIVE taxation, of course! Can’t let law enforcement affect the bottom line, doncha know!)
