Blowing most of the entire budget on a CPU and cutting corners elsewhere isn't a good idea, but is actually a horrible experience? I've paired an i9 with an Intel H610 board to find out.
Thanks for watching :)

It won't, speedstep is enough to breakdown the io lanes, which is btw the real issue. 12900k vroom vroom, 13900T 35watt KaBOOM. Oh before I forget, here is the only way to eek out of more life fom this chip. P.S "not written by the terrible Thunderlizards" 1: Disable all C states 2: Disable speedstep by manually choosing a specific multiplier. 3: Disable E-Cores if they don't want to listen 4: Slightly lower the clock and voltages on the DDR5 to around 1.4v 5: No more PCIE SSD via the top lanes, grab the Southbridge on the bottom or use Sata. Basically try to stabilize the chip as much as possible, do not let it microSwitch as much, and prevent the io from being hammered when your system wakes up or when it wants to speedstep up. Bit of luck this will keep most of the oi lanes in better health. Hope this helps.

@@infochannel8705 not sure about any games, but you may be referring to the instability issues experienced by some 13th and 14th gen intel processors. As far as I know, mostly (but not exclusively) i7 and i9 models were affected by a microcode bug that caused problems with voltages - they requested more power than they could handle. There was also a separate issue with some 13th gen processors with oxidation harming them during the manufacturing process, but I'm not sure about the specifics.

My i5 14600K is doing fine with my motherboard voltage settings tweaked, enforced inter's recommended power limits. I also managed to under-volt my cpu by -0.140 V while increasing clocks, so with my current CPU Lite Load settings + under-volt my voltage is at around 1.10 V at max. Temperature during a hot day while 100% cpu usage doing some stress testing is at around 70 degrees celsius. All of this without contact frame and arctic-mx2 thermal paste (which I'm going to replace soon) + at best a mid-range msi 360 AIO cooler. I hope for me it's gonna be fine.

Actually assuming that the motherboard isn't in any long-term danger! That CPU is probably in no more or even less danger, that CPU won't be able to receive as much power as it's designed to receive with a high-end motherboard. Therefore, it's actually probably very much constrained on voltage and therefore is probably one of the safest from degradation at the moment. In fact, this is probably what I would do if I were going with such a chip. I would look one for one that has a high quality vrm set and keep an eye on it and I would probably run it until the microcode update and then I'd buy the expensive motherboard that would allow it to boost

I have an MSI A620m which is very similar to this H610m and I get the feeling based on techyescity’s testing and this video that the VRM setup is designed for low power chips using the stock down draft coolers which blow air down to cool the VRMs in order to make up for the lack of VRM heatsinks. In those use cases, I think these boards are a good value. They definitely work, but you get what you pay for. In the case of my Ryzen 7500F and the MSI A620m however, the AMD wraith stealth downdraft cooler was woefully insufficient for cooling the CPU even if it kept the VRM temps in check. My ultimate solution was to upgrade to a cooler that is essentially a clone of a wraith spire and to undervolt my CPU to the point I could maintain stock performance without exceeding 80w. Now the cpu maxes out at 84C in cinebench while MOS temps in hardware monitor are around 55C. So for AM5, this cheap little board is a bit more of a pain to deal with.

One thing I had hoped Asrock had pursued was the all in one motherboard concept which would have had a set of Intel and AMD CPU sockets in a removable format accompanied with a set of bespoke NB/SB hardware in a module form. In the mists of time Asrock were known for their "upgrade" motherboards which would have the outgoing CPU and RAM formats on the same board as the incoming format so to keep apace one just bought a new CPU and RAM set and took out the old one, installed the new one and PC would be ready to rumble immediately. It was rumoured that Asrock were considering this "one motherboard fits all" concept meaning you would buy one motherboard per iteration of CPU genesis and leaving you free to option in the best ram, graphics and storage as you liked and no more compatibility headaches so it was suggested. I think it is also time to bring back multi CPU platforms for the home consumer, every genesis of CPU's bring about claims of dual socketed this and that for gaming machines but they never get into production despite a large following of those who would jus' love to have a pair of high end Intel or AMD CPU's with matching ram pools... I know I would ;)

for the people thinking of doing this, the reason you dont is because the VRMs are fewer phases in number increasing load on them and thus heat which causes them to fry because they have no cooling, a fan alone will not do. The board will fry theres a chance it takes other components with it when it does edit apparently people seem to think im saying this will explode immediately; this is a long term use issue the VRMs will exceed spec over time degrade then fry and when they do there is a chance they inject the voltage theyre controlling directly into the board when they short out, where it goes is just whatever trace it shorts into if it shorts into any.

I've never had trouble with cheap or used motherboards (even a 10$ used am3+ one i used for multiple years with an fx-8320 with light overclocking). But then again, i haven't done that with the recent high-end intel CPUs that love to pull upwards of 250 watts and auto-overclock themselves to near instability. I wonder what the cross-over point for spending on a motherboard vs spending on a CPU is. Would putting 100$ more into the motherboard and getting a cheaper processor, like an 14700k, have better performance?

upgrading from my i7 8700k to an i9 13900ks the biggest diffrence i could tell is how heavy the motherboard was compared to the old i7 mobo the heatsinks on the z790 are huge

I made the mistake of putting a 13700F in the cheapest B660 board. My cinebench score was around 23000 points. Later on i built an ITX system with a much nicer motherboard, with the same CPU i got 28000 points

For this IMO it would be more interesting to see this with a low end chip like if it makes sense to go higher end motherboard but low end chip.

It’s really funny to think that the 14900k supports DDR4 because outside this video it’s probably a really uncommon pairing

an AIO with those already constricted vrms is a bad idea. Would've loved to see a fan blowing towards the vrms and seen if the i9 boosted higher

With that score of 37.000 + looks like you are using the latest intel bios on the motherboard because that cpu will hit 41.000 + with the old bios but don't use it big problem come with it anyway love videos like this.

Wow thats massively gimped performance! Crazy how thirsty that chip is. I think going for a solid mid tier motherboard is the way to go. That way you can easily start with a cheaper chip, then later on safely throw the best processor of the stack in with no issue

I did something similar on AM4. Used B350 board, but with holes for radiator, so I used DIY. That board without mounting holes, but if someone will buy something like that second hand, can watch for it as an option. For socket 1700 if it's gaming rig I'll rather switch off e-cores, turn on power limit of 125w or even lower and tried to downvolt CPU if it's possible on this board.

I think time to invest in a thermal cam or at least laser thermometer get some temps from all over the board. Crazy how much less wattage it's using.

Your "limit" in performance is also maybe because other board was using other auto settings. Sometimes we need to manually enable or set the settings. For example with my R7 5th gen on my board RE-Bar was disabled, and CPU boost even though its on auto was disabled, so it will not hit max GHZ. So in reality any mid tier board is enough for almost any CPU we put.

VRM implementation matters. Here’s hoping Intel prevents the whole generation from becoming unnecessary e-waste.

In fairness, I've seen W680 boards with weaker looking VRM than this and unsurprisingly they complain about performance when they throw an i9 in them

this is very common where i'm from, i remember seeing a lot of H110 boards paired with top of their gen i7s on sale xD though those chips were not nearly as power hungry as they are now :0

the vrm temps would be interesting, i guess something arround 90-100 degrees, if someone does something like that, i would recommend to use a big top blow cooler, so the vrm's get some air. Or atleast a watercooler with a vrm fan

now do the most expensive motherboard with the cheapest cpu and see the performance difference and also see how much performance you can push at it with its bios

My 5950X scores a fair chunk more in R23 than the 14900K on that board (~27k with my tweaks), and I can cool it comfortably on a 120mm AIO. Rather shocking how bad Intel's processors are when power constrained.

Longevity might actually be better; the lower power draw slows down the CPU’s degradation.

I have an MSI H610 and it works fine for 12400F as you mentioned. I wouldn’t put anything more than that though. I’m guessing your VRM was at 100+ degrees.

You should try the opposite, put the cheapest CPU in the most expensive motherboard and crank all the overclock and power settings to their highest. I have an i3-10325 in a z590 motherboard and the bios, Windows and HW monitor say I have it running at 5.4ghz (all voltages set to auto) which should theoretically not be possible on a locked CPU, leads to a lot of fun and interesting results. 👍 Cheers
I paid just £50 for this HP OMEN gaming PC, but why was it so cheap?
