Anyone who has had a dislocation of their kneecap or who experience instability of the kneecap should have an interest in understanding trochlear dysplasia. It is one of those conditions often inadequately investigated during the clinical work-up of patellar instability, but if it is significant and unrecognised then unrelated surgical attempts at restoring patellar stability may fail.

I was diagnosed with Trochlear Dysplasia only a few years ago, even though I have had many, many knee dislocations on both knees since I was 7. I have undergone surgery in Berlin, performed by Dr. Schmeling of Sporthopedicum clinic and I could not be happier with the results - my right knee is stable now and I will also fix the left one next year! I recommend anyone with this debilitating problem to seek help from a qualified surgeon -- I am now 38 years old and I only wish I could have started with this process earlier. In my home country no one has ever heard of this problem, let alone recommended any surgery, the usual answer was: Do not touch it, you will make it even worse! The surgery was very difficult as my dysplasia was Grade 4, the worst case, meaning the most extra material -- 5 separate procedures were done, the most important being actual making of the grove in the cartilage of the femur bone, but it was worth it! As my ligaments were completely streched out from all the dislocations those were also taken care of. And yes, I was told that this is definitely a hereditary problem *that no one in my family has, as far as I know. It is not a good feeling when you find out that you have congenital deformities on your bones, but hey, there are worse things in life than that. good luck to all of you, I had no idea that this problem is quite common!

Did you live in Berlin when you got the surgery? Im from Romania, have the same issue and I need to get this done, but I am not feeling confident in doctors here. They don't do so many surgeries of this type. Is there any way to email tje clinic and ask for a second opinion from the doctor? On Google Maps there was no such info.

Trochleoplasty and MPFL recostruction surgery were the main ones alongside some ligament and tendon reconstructions. The recovery at least 6/7 months until you can walk normally and then still troubles, pain etc. but stability is there and that was crucial!@@Jessica-kg1sr

I was just recently diagnosed with trochlear dysplasia bilaterally and wanted to get more info. I have it in both knees, never had any dislocations but I also have a Baker’s cyst behind my left knee. That was diagnosed back 15 years ago and I had injured/tweaked my knee about 20 years ago. My knee doc doesn’t think I really have a Baker’s cyst but whatever. This video has explained to me all about the trochlear dysplasia. Thank you.

surgery is a way to reshape the grove and tie together ligaments to help keep everything in place. i’ve been diagnosed with this condition in both knees since second grade (age-8) i’m now i’m 8th grade(age-14) and it’s been painful. i can’t have the surgery until i’m doing growing. but yeah🤷‍♀️

@@lizgameswhenever6139 I was just recently diagnosed with this in both knees as well. Along with this, I was diagnosed with a constant Patellar Subluxation in both knees. It's been very painful. Given my circumstances, I am too much of a risk to have surgery at all. I go tomorrow for a second opinion and to get my braces for both legs. It's not fun but I'm glad to know it's not that rare to have it.

I am a personal trainer & I have trochlear dysplasia. My doctors always told me that surgery was the only option but I started building muscle around my knee and working on getting stronger in the places of my leg that could cause the dislocations like my ankles, my quads, my glutes, etc. It has been 15 years and I have had outstanding results from muscle training & my knee caps are completely stable because of the muscle built around. I hope the best for you. Surgery is not the only option.
