We have nearly the same thing where i grew up in the Philippines. The only difference is the filling, it's with shredded coconut cooked in palm sugar. And it's cooked using the smallest coconut shell as the mould and steamed. I soooo love and miss this🥰🥰🥰

This recipe is called as in the same name in Tamizhnadu as "Puttu" whatever we used to make with rice which is grinded as dry flour and cooked it will have this name puttu. For e.g. if it is cooked in string form it will be called as nool puttu which means string puttu...

Yes. Though over in south-east asia, the putu is more as a sweet dessert with jaggery or gula melaka and fresh lightly salted shredded coconut perfumed with pandanus leaves. Some versions are made with glutinous rice flour while others are made with simple rice flour. I have eaten your savoury version of puttu and irachiputti. All those putus , sweet and savoury are all delicious indeed

You're most welcome. As for the steamer, you can just use any saucepan or pot. Place a small rack or a small bowl, then put a plate on top. Cover the lid with a piece of cloth, to prevent the water from dripping into the Putu Piring. Thanks :-)

We have this as a breakfast food in southern indian state kerala.it is also called puttu. We do not add palm sugar..just coconut and rice powder..we pair it with souvory curries like chick pea or chicken curry..or we pair it with banana; smaller varieties..we are members of same human family; even if we speak different languages, reside in countries 1000s of miles apart and have different religions.

Good tutorial video, i'd try your recipe and i'm using the same mould as yours, failed 2 times, my putu cake is still uncooked. What kind of rice flour that most suitable for making putu cake? Do you steam the cake with lower heat after the water boils? I'm from Indonesia. Thanks
@Seasaltwithfood

Well, I'm sorry it didn't turned out well for you. Thanks for the feedback. If it's uncooked,, try steam it longer period of time? Perhaps the rice flour mixture was too dry? I use rice flour from Indian grocers, no brand. I steamed the kue on high heat.

Sorry to hear that! You should not follow the recipe to a "T'. You have to adjust the texture accordingly, diff brand ingredients, steamer, temp of water etc. If uncooked, steam longer. Hope these help.

Made this, but realised there is a problem where 1 1/4 cup of pandan water ratio to 2 cup of flour resulted very wet flour, became too watery and couldn't sieve at all. Wonder is there any typo error in the ingredients, should it be only 1/4 cup instead? At the end I added more flour to rescue.
@Seasaltwithfood
@Seasaltwithfood 4 жыл бұрын
You have to adjust the water accordingly (1 1/4 cups is fine)..it depends how dry (after frying) is the rice flour, and do not add the water in one go. Slowly add and rub the rice flour. Hope this help.
