Nice - this whole modular approach is super cool … I had some of the same compression issues installing a retainer for a firesteel on the leather sheath I made for my parang … apparently it’s something to think about whenever extra stuff is added …

I was thinking of making another - better sheath. But this one is so functional, and not really thattt terrible....so I'm sticking with it for now :)

@@BorealWilderness Ikr - I’m working on a more traditional style wooden one now, just kinda guessing my way forward … I am not sure if it’s gonna be more practical than the leather sheath, but it’s good fun I guess well see. I hope I’ll be able to find a way to fit a small whetstone on there along with a firesteel and a spare small knife, but we’ll see 😏 if not my next project will probably involve pvc …

Rather than a whetstone, the Fallkniven DC4 is a better and more robust field sharpening tool, imho. That's my all in one field sharpening :)

How did you get the pvc? Is it just a pipe you heated up?

Yes, I just bought a short length of thin drain pipe, cut it down the middle and popped it on the oven. It softens up then I take it out and let it cool flat. I then mark up then reheat and form it.

Very nice project. Kydex is so expensive here in Thailand that I want to try PVC pipe. How did you heat the pipe? Over fire? In an oven? In boiling water? Thank you.

I used an oven. Found that it's too hard to get a large enough tub of water boiling for large sheets. And heat guns are too concentrated to get a whole piece soft uniformly. Over a fire is prone to be singed.

One could also just take a piece of PVC pipe, heat it, press it and be done. Would probably take 10 minutes and 2 bucks of material. This one is complicated coz I wanted it to be, for the fun of it :) Definitely would not be practical to be commercialized, if that's your angle, as folks probably would not be willing to pay for the time that went into it. Or maybe not, as a crazy amount of work goes into those hand carved sheaths with the braided rattan etc. and people still do buy em 🤔
