It is unbelievable that she can still sing like this at 63!!!! That high D was still simply amazing. She could go higher but D was always her best note. Only Callas for a few years was able to sing notes like that above the staff besides her with that much volume.
@piruja1965-mf6sw5 күн бұрын
You probably reversed the names, Callas had a normal voice, Sutherland had a bigger voice than Callas. And then about the high notes: Callas high notes were strident, ugly. Sutherland's high notes were beautiful

@Classicvideofan13 күн бұрын
What is your memory of these performances ?
@wotan1095012 күн бұрын
@ First, it was nearly impossible to snag a Lucia ticket. I had to sign up for a college class on opera appreciation, simply because the tuition included a ticket. I had seen Sutherland many times before she was “fired” by the Met. And she was getting on in years. But her voice sounded as full, resonant, and brilliant as ever. For those who never heard her in a theater, it was a physical experience - the higher she went, the more brilliant she sounded, and the tone would ricochet through the theater. Kraus, as always, was thoroughly dependable, with ease throughout his range, and popped out high notes with seemingly no effort. I didn’t find his actual tone ingratiating though, a little too nasal. They were again in fine form for Daughter of the Regiment, having quite a romp, although the opera isn’t a favorite of mine.

There are some well known interviews with Zefferelli and others including Richard who make a lot of somewhat disparaging remarks relating to her size. @Classicvideofan10 күн бұрын
Well it is true and notorious that spelling was not her best achievement, but many other immense singers are in the same position ... at some point of vocal genius, I am lowering my expectations about perfect language ... so that I can really appreciate it anyway ... I think there might be different angles for apreciation ... and as a french person, believe me, I could barely apreciate anybody if I was too strict on pronunciation skills (with some exceptions) :)))

Generally speaking, I feel more happy focussing on the positive aspect of things instead of searching for the - inevitable - flaws of what is presented to me ... but of course I see your point and respect your point of view ... ;)
@massimoturrini914610 күн бұрын
@@Classicvideofan well! I too, try to respect all points of view, of course but, you grow, in life, having a pragmatic approach not ideological, I understand that it is convenient to "take refuge" in the subjective but, in life there is above all the "objectivity of things", right? I find that your reasoning, very respectable, inevitably leads to the decadence to which we now witness (in all areas) especially in the lyrical one.....of course, as you say, many are the singers who have had and have the problem that Joan Sutherland had, some even Italian.....but if in the past there were the greatest and most acclaimed singers in the world it is precisely because a primary aspect was not neglected. if the aforementioned singers had sung at the time of Giuseppe Verdi he would have thrown them out of the theatre in 2 seconds because "THE WORD FIRST OF ALL" as Beppino used to say... this is also to remember that the first thing to come is RESPECT for the author... to me, honestly, hearing a singer who emits sounds without understanding, forgive me, but after a while my ear gets tired
@Classicvideofan8 күн бұрын
I speak 4 languages plus 2 of which I have some notions. Nevertheless I am unable to understand the words when I listen to ANY singer with very few exceptions. Unless I know the words from memory or read the libretto while listening. Plus I love Russian opera, Tcheque opera, which are languages I have no clue at all. So, objectively I feel quite unable to judge the "perfect" pronounciation of a singer in 95% of the cases. Verdi was an italian speaking about italian singers singing for italian audiences. Things have changed in every aspects in the operatic scene. As far as I am concerned prononciation is a rarely a show stopper in my apreciation of an opera singer. Unless it is obviously hurting my ears ... I mean maybe I am lucky not to be german or italian. BUt as an example, I adore John Vickers, even though I know some German critics recurrently mentioned his faulty spelling ... In french, I know very very few singers without faulty prononciation (except AlagnaCrespin or Thill Dessay ... and some other french singers) but I know almost no other 'foreign' singer witthout flaws in their prononciation (best are maybe Ramey Schicoff Renée Gedda Kaufmann ...) nevetheless I tink Domingo was a great Don Jose Verret was a great Dalila ... words are one aspect in my apreciation for my native language ... but I feel incompetent to assess definitive jugements for any other language ....

Kraus was, in my opinion, the WORST tenor of the era. He is un listenable, even next to the great Sutherland.
@Classicvideofan9 күн бұрын
All sorts of opinions are equaly legitimate ... I heard so much totally opposed opinions about the same artists that I totally lost any sense of right or wrong ... the way we receive art is so individual ... I listened to Kraus many times in live performances. His timber of voice was not very flattering to say the least, but his singng style technic and projection was remarquable ... and I learned to appreciate it quite a lot ... I believe there might be different reasons why we are touched by opera singers .. some for the utter beauty of the sound (Pavarotti, Ghiaurov, Price, Caballe) ... some for their style/musicianship (Kraus, Bergonzi, Scotto) some for their dramatic power (Rysanek, Scotto, ...) some for thier instrumental qualities/power (Sutherland, Bartoli, Horne ...) but every individual can be more or less touched/interested/sensible by some of these 'angles/aspects' ... and the stage live experience is also quite different than recordings, especially for some singers ... and in my experience, my appreciation of many singers has changed a great deal along with my experiences ... so ... no truth no wrong no right ... art is not about that ... and every experience and feeling is as valuable as any other ... :))

Bonynge is one of the last great connoisseurs of the 20th century female voice. He heard Flagstad in all her great roles, he's one of the last people around who can testify to Callas' greatness pre 1955 and he played a very big part in the A list career of Dame Joan. He's also one of the last great ballet conductors
