I feel she was at the peak of her dramatic powers during this era. Renée Fleming is an incomparable artist and my favorite living diva. I simply adore her. ❤

You’re right. Some of the bloom had gone by the late 2000s compared to the late 90s but it was easily still the most beautiful voice in the world, and her most moving acting and character portraits comes from this era - her Met Tatianas, her London Traviatas, and her Baden Baden Marschallins. Even here in concert, she was so involved in the character. Priceless document.

I don't understand how I live in a world where an opera listener could listen to this and think "she doesn't have true musicianship'. Mind-blowing. She is literally the best of the best of her generation.

Thank you for this video! I was lucky enough see this performance live, it was 2007 april. Fleming was still in the peak of her career here and she was absolutely fantastic. She brought the audience to her feet, she was celebrated as a real opera superstar that evening. Thais was Fleming’s (one of) ultimate role, it was written for her, she was Thais herself. After the mirror aria she was even more glorious, in the 3act she was singing like an angel, her top notes were just amazing, never forget her last closing note of the opera: especially in Paris that night, it was so creamy and golden , i have it on recording. After Paris she was performing Thais in Vienna few days later, where she was even more in her element, she was performing then with Thomas Hampson just like on the original cd. Unforgettable evening was this in Paris in Theatre du Chatelet!

So both of us were at this concert :) I will try to upload and share the rest of the concert, so that we can recall what you mentioned about the final part :) I fully agreed with you she was definitely Thais and the role was written for her exactly at this stage of her career both vocally and dramatically/physically ... As she Was Manon at earlier stage, and has always been the Marshalin from first (kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKOpdJmKq9Bpe8U) until last appearance ... these were really her signature roles (with few others like Rusalka) in these specific roles she will stay forever a reference point in the history of opera IMHO :) we were very privileged to be able to attend such unforgettable moments 😊

I have uploaded the finale of her Vienna 2007 performance - truly one of the greatest live performances ever of the role, and this part even rivals her live recording from 8 years before.

Her commitment is total on every level - voice, acting - the way she bites into "éternellement" takes Thaïs's desperation as far as it can humanly go. I think it makes her subsequent conversion so much more believable: she knows that her career has a time limit, that Venus cannot grant her an eternal exemption to human frailty. She finds what she needs in another God. ❤

I think that it may also resound very personal for her at this period of her life/career ... her involvment and understanding of Thais's challenges and fears probably resounds deeply in her own as a human being ...

OMG OMG OMG!!! Finally dared to watch this. New year just broke and I am in tears. I new this would break me. This is true artistry and the most magnificent voice IMHO! Her chest notes are from another world and the drama created. Her use of mouth and jaw and all her equipment is just so fascinating to witness. Impeccable performance! A real Diva in the true essence of the word - Goddess! So grateful to you Sir! Merci beaucoup!!!🙏🏼🧡 Even Eschenbach seems impressed and filled with admiration.

Very exciting, she really sang her heart out. To me, she sang a lot better in the simu-cast of the Met performance. Hey, everybody, aria or no aria, to me, this is the only good segment of music in the entire opera. As for the Young Renee??? I would not call her that in this video. My idea of saying someone “young” would be that she was not yet made it or just about making it. Common, it was 2006, she was at her pick. Her face was on the city buses running all over in the whole New York City. P.S. I am a big fan of Renee. Thank you for posting.

Only good music in the opera? What about the insanely gorgeous Meditation, that returns in the gorgeous finale? Or the beautiful duet bagne d’eau
@piustwelfth11 күн бұрын
Not really an aria. More like 8 mins. of recitativo. P.S.: There was also a youtube ad in the middle of the performance. Disgraceful.
@Kurtperry4111 күн бұрын
The ad is because you don’t have the paid app. And this is just French grand opera. It’s literally an aria….
@piustwelfth11 күн бұрын
@@Kurtperry41 "literally" in what sense? It certainly does not sound like an aria. It sounds far more like musically accompanied speech and fits the definition of recitativo to a "T".
@piustwelfth11 күн бұрын
@@Kurtperry41 There were TWO ads before the recitativo started, yet youtube placed another ad in the middle. Ridiculous.
@Classicvideofan11 күн бұрын
I managed to remove these ads in the middle thk you for mentioning it ;) ... BTW this is definitely an "aria" or more precisely un "Grand air" by any standard :)
@piustwelfth11 күн бұрын
@@Classicvideofan Thank you. My point about the "aria" is that much of it sounds like declatory speech accompanied by music (regardless of how it's labeled). There is certainly no melody. So by my standard, it's not really an aria. P.S.: I have the highest and most exacting standards of anyone I know.

Point taken. She had her debut in this role in 1991. But she is younger here than she is now.
