Great stuff! I've had the synth for a bit, but this helped break it down excellently. I'd love to see how the patching would work with other semi-modular synths! I haven't seen many showing the full potential yet!

So happy this helped you! I love to hear that my walkthroughs help folks with their own synths. Unfortunately I don't have any eurorack, that's not my area of expertise but I'd say start by patching the oscillators/mix out of your other synth into the in of the sallen key filter as it's the most unique thing about this synth IMO :)

Thanks for the review. It's a really interesting synth. If only it had an envelope follower it could have been an MS20 killer, but, anyway....
@MilesAwayOfficial

That would be a great addition! I don't own an MS20, but this sounds completely different to my Korg Arp2600, so even though that's more powerful I love having the Malevolent for its character.

Yeah it's the same type of filter, the Sallen-Key type. From experience with an original MS20 MK1, this screams really well but I don't think, at least from this example, it has quite as much nastiness when compared to the dual MS20 filters but you know, I'm just happy to see a synth that let's you do this sort of stuff too. Definitely think this handles pseudo-drive better though, I haven't really mastered the patch bay yet.

How would this interact with my BARP 2600? Are the control voltages compatible? I‘m not really an expert in (semi-)modular synths.
@MilesAwayOfficial
@MilesAwayOfficial 3 ай бұрын
I believe so, I am 95% sure it’s only the moog stuff that uses a different voltage, and even that works, it’s just not great to use long term as it could damage your hardware. But I’ll let a modular expert correct me if I am mistaken
@dankeplace
@dankeplace Жыл бұрын
If I had the room, I would get one, it's a great gateway to modular and much cheaper than other gear I have seen. For people wanting to understand patch routing, this is a great synth imo. The layout is simple and that s what makes this something people should consider.

Wow this thing sounds so wild. I have a sub 37 and while it has a giant sweet spot, it can be a bit too smooth. This might be what I’m looking for to compliment my setup

Very good video and inspiration. I own a PWM Malevolent and think the best is to sample good sound sequences in your DAW and store them in a folder. Thats because I do not like paper patch-templates for reproducing a specific sound.

Awesome demo and showcase of the synth. Most videos I’ve seen don’t really use the synth to make songs, they tend to show the aggressiveness and the experimental side of things. I was looking at getting a grandmother, but you can’t beat the price of this. So my question is for someone like me who makes west coast beats, is this good for making unique funky bass patches? Also, does it have good low end for sub basses?
@MilesAwayOfficial
@MilesAwayOfficial Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching! This is completely different than a Grandmother, I would say if you like what you hear in this demo you are gonna love this, it just sounds incredible gnarly and huge, but if want smooth, you don't want this. It can't do that smooth, calm, round sound like the Grandma. They are super different styles.

@METALOZON

@@MilesAwayOfficial It's not even the mini keys that stop me from buying this. I'm coming from playing electric guitar where the lowest note is E, and here the lowest E is already near the middle of the keyboard, giving me so little room to actually play. If they put an E right before tat F or made it a normal 37 key starting with C, It would have been an instant buy for me.

Agreed can't get these sounds so easily any other way but I'm a little disappointed really it seems to be a one-trick pony despite its fantastic layout and patch possibilities on paper it looks like it can do anything but in reality maybe not... it does seem it can only do these kind of mental sounds which are nice but would be nice to have more versatility great video thanks for that
@MilesAwayOfficial
@MilesAwayOfficial 9 ай бұрын
It definitely can do cleaner sounds! You basically just have to be SUPER careful with gain staging and filter resonance. So it has a very small sweet spot for clean sounds. Kind of like using a Ducati to drive in a school zone: you can do it, but you won't have as much fun as if you just go top speed on the Autobahn. Hah.
