Join us as we explore the abandoned Soviet era ghost town of Pyramiden in the Arctic. Discover the history and eerie beauty of this unique Russian ghost town in Svalbard. We travelled to Pyramiden, to learn what caused this, once busy arctic town, to be completely abandoned in just a few months.
This promises to be an incredible journey as we explore the Russian ghost town of Pyramiden! Despite looking like we are in the middle of Russia, Pyramiden, is actually nestled in the snow covered Arctic wilderness of Svalbard, owned by Norway. This once-thriving mining settlement is now a haunting reminder of its Soviet past. In this video, we'll uncover the fascinating history of Pyramiden, from its establishment in the 1970s to its eerie abandonment in the 1990s.
Experience the stunning landscapes and unique architecture of this frozen time capsule, as we walk through deserted buildings, abandoned machinery, and the remnants of a community that once bustled with life. Discover the stories behind the locals who lived here, the challenges they faced, and the reasons for the town's eventual decline.
Whether you're a history buff, an urban explorer, or simply love to travel and are curious about forgotten places, this video offers an in-depth look at Pyramiden's intriguing past and its place in modern culture. Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more travel adventures to remote places around the world!

There are villages in Cyprus that have been abandoned because of the war since 1974. Unfortunately, they had to abandon their property. Very sad history for the small island of Mediterranean sea www.google.com/maps/place/Mara%C5%9F+Kapal%C4%B1+B%C3%B6lgesi,+Gazima%C4%9Fusa+99450/@35.0871428,33.96047,10262m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m6!3m5!1s0x14dfc87bdbda0003:0xe0150457859be25f!8m2!3d35.0959262!4d33.9690373!16s%2Fg%2F1tdkv0dl?authuser=0&entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI0MDkxNi4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D

@@MattandJulia unfortunately not yet, but I think it would be an amazing adventure going there. It must have been a hard life isolated like that. Funny how the people there were treated a little better than most. I’m sure the abundance of great seafood would have been a luxury most people in the USSR never would get. The internet signal way up there sure would be slow, never a worry just so glad you got it out tonight, it was perfect timing, thank you so much.

What a stunning place! It's amazing to see how well preserved it all is. Also, this makes me appreciate the grand experiments the Soviets attempted. Although it didn't work out in the end, it's amazing to see what they did achieve even for a short time. We need more societal experiments to find better ways for societies to get along and support all their citizens. Thank you so much for sharing this tour with us!

Well, Pyramiden was not nor will it be on my bucket list. So glad you went there for us! Excellent drone shots and filming in the different rooms and buildings. When you go (of course you will) to Namibia, visit Kolmanskop which is a ghost diamond town. Bowling Alley, theater, houses, hospital... now abandoned with lots of sand. Perhaps too hot for you Julia!?! What a unique visit this one was. Thanks for taking us there. Hugs from France.

Kia ora Matt/Julia. Lovely to hear from you again by video. 😀 I wonder if the relatively good state of preservation has to do with the relative inaccessibility of Pyramiden, which discourages potential squatters and vandals from attempting to reach it when combined with needing a guide who will have an idea of who has been in the settlement. Being in/near the Arctic Circle and the risk of encountering a polar bear probably plays its part too! Fascinating video. You really do visit some cool/bizarre places. The degree of respect and care you show for the places you go is great. Keep up the good work/fun.

Absolutely stunning scenery. Everything there is so nice and neat and the buildings seem to be really far apart. Did you find any sign of hot plates, kettles or coffee makers in the apartments? Fascinating. Not sure I followed what the specific reason was for people to leave so suddenly that everything was left behind. Many of the things left behind could have been useful somewhere else. Surprising they just up and left. There must be a reason for that other than a mine accident. That period was at same time as USSR collapse and probably just literally, everything stopped and nothing coming in to sustain the town, they all just up and left??? Just my wandering mind thinking about it.

Glad we could share it 🙏🏼 Yes, the compounding affect of the lack of subsidies due to the economic crisis in Russia after the fall of USSR, the fire in mine, and the airplane disaster, caused it’s eventual closure x

I did enjoy your vlog but I can only imagine how grim their lives would’ve been, to work in a coal mine during the polar night. Even if the pay was great for those times, miners used to have a fairly short life span, it must’ve been a pretty depressing life and under constant “observation” from the KGB, probably not to get “contaminated” by “capitalist ideas”.

Even if there was a free house, I would not live there... not with the polar bears, the complete 24 hour darkness in winter, and the frigid temperatures. Not as cold as Siberia, but Siberia has sunlight all year round (except Norlisk and Murmansk), so I'd prefer Siberia.

@@MattandJulia Yes but the Nazi state was also the National Socialist party and they were Fascists. It was always a misleading title of convenience that overshadowed the many true Socialist state policies of various countries of the world. See the the post war British Labour government as a prime example of true socialist policy. The remains of it are barely hanging on now but were a shining example of what Socialism really is.
