The response to this video has been amazing thank you all so much. Definitely going to focus on more long form content in the future. I've seen loads of people that actually want to watch the show themselves without my commentary. The show is notoriously hard to get hold of without major cuts and the aspect ratio being messed with. The easiest way is to get season 1 and 2 on amazon video make sure to only click the ones with the channel 4 watermark and blue banner. The britbox version has been heavily censored. This only works for people in the UK. Even a VPN won't work as it'll decline your payment if you try to buy it overseas. For everyone else it's a bit more tricky. It is on amazon but it's been heavily edited, with scenes cut and the aspect ratio messed with so everything looks more zoomed in, going against the entire point of the cinematography. If you have a VPN you can set your region to the UK and then search to buy the channel 4 version of Utopia from the KZbin store. I bought it myself to test it and the aspect ratio is the same and the scenes are uncut. It's the best version you can get outside of the UK legally. The Utopia subreddit has a post explaining how to watch it untampered if you don't live in the UK. I think they're going to be more active again since this video's been released. I'll update this post if I get any more information. www.reddit.com/r/utopiatv/comments/j1efu8/how_to_watch_the_original_show_uncut/ TL;DR UK > US + ratio

Something I realized about why it's a Chinese sign for "rabbit" in particular. One of the more popular myths about the rabbit in China is related to the moon goddess Chang'e. The rabbit is portrayed within the moon, brewing the elixir of immortality (preservation, human survival). As to how it got there, well, one time during the moon festival celebration all the animals were giving something to the humans and the rabbit, having nothing to offer but its own delicious flesh, threw itself into the fire so the others could eat it. For that, they were placed in the moon, in plain sight, yet always disconnected. Again, being Mr Rabbit won't get you recognition, or fame, and you won't be noted in history - it's just sacrifice after sacrifice, dedicating your entire being to the cause and letting others feed off of it. One more way the network sees itself as martyrs, to bring salvation to the world through the ultimate sacrifice, which they view as noble.

Something really cool about the show I noticed on my like 5th or 6th watch through, Donaldson does actually do the correct "nice" thing when Becky tries to humanize with him. We see from Mark Carval later that he was faking the thoraxon and really just selling her opioids, so when she asked him to just give her the pills because it was the right person thing to do, he does actually show her his own messed up kindness by throwing the opioids into the river

Another dumb thing about the US remake: Jessica's tattoos. Every tattoo shop I've ever gone to requires some form of ID. Something Jessica would be waaaaaay to paranoid to have. Not to mention how they would make her much more recognizable, not something you'd want to have if you're trying to stay under the radar of a global conspiracy. Plus, fucking expensive. That's potentially several hundred dollars worth of ink on a woman who, theoretically, has never worked a job, is constantly on the move, and who is so on edge that she forgoes sex in case she has to make a break for it. But we're supposed to believe that she willingly walked into a business (possibly with CCTV,) showed a government issued ID, made an appointment, paid hundreds of dollars from her limited funds, and sat in a chair for several hours to get some leaves on her arm and calf?
@unus_38823 жыл бұрын
Not to mention the constant upkeep you have to do after getting a tattoo to ensure it doesn’t get infected. I doubt she’d have the time to ensure that she puts some antiseptic cream on her arm or calf either. And that’s just a whole other risk for her because it could very easily cos major problems for her if it got infected.
@aniyilator3 жыл бұрын
Yes exactly, if they wanted to give her character some physical feature like that then stick and poke tattoos would make much more sense, but like you're saying that would put her at a huge risk for getting sick from infections. All in all story's shit -69/10

Jessica’s US version really bothers me after seeing the UK version. Beyond just making her less likeable or understandable the performance really misses the mark. In the UK version the actor did an amazing job making her feel like an out of place outcast, she was cold, unpredictable and had this strange alien quality to her speech and movements. Then the US version comes along and just feels like an edgy cool girl that gets added to every other show. Absolutely fantastic.

@matthewbaang87492 жыл бұрын
@@Crystal_Dylan yeah, if you haven't seen that part of that video, basically the group went to burn down a travelling zoo that was suspicously always there whenever the virus spread in a certain location. they gunned all animals, mostly rabbits to prevent the spread, took one with them for no reason, and made possibly the dumbest plot point in the show, by (spoilers) Jessica being bit by the infected rabbit after sticking her own finger in the cage. i don't know why they chose Jessica Hyde, the only professional in the group to do this. Also, you don't really need to apologize for Americans lacking subtlety, it ain't your fault. one thing im disappointed that this show doesnt actually (seemingly) interrogate is ecofascism - a very niche environmentalist belief that can perfectly describe the beliefs the network was founded on. ecofascism purely believes that overpopulation is, in and of itself, the issue, and fails to acknowledge global and systemic issues of distribution and wealth. you could say that the network has just enough influence to do what they do in the show, but not enough to actually rework global distribution systems or implement clean energy globally - however, milner has direct access to hundreds of billions in wealth, as shown by the scene where she explains V day to jeff. so a discussion of what kind of person would choose to sterilise a world instead of improving it would be nice. and i do think its more in milners character to choose the former - but a diagetic investigation of that fact would be really engaging, and could maybe open the series up to seeing what kinds of people would CHOOSE the former over the latter as well.

The show isn't meant to spoonfeed people sociopolitical philosophies or motives, it's simply showcasing them at an extravagant scale, and letting the viewer come to conclusions about the underlying personalities and philosophies of the different characters. It's literally spoken out loud multiple times within the show "there are no sides, only people who help you, and people who don't". The water is much murkier than political labels. This is the biggest problem with the American adaptation, and most current day hollywood productions in general. They just can't help but treat viewers like thoughtless sheeple, incapable of thinking critically and reading between the lines. They spoonfeed, over explain, and exposition dump every bit of information to make sure even a mosquito could follow along the plot. It's just horrible writing, all with real modern political and racial narratives pumped in and manipulating/altering the intended moral, because if you don't have your ethnic minority and LGBTQ+ and neoliberal socialist virtues front and centre in your project, Hollywood just won't fund or respect you or your work.

The way Pietre was handled in the US version removed pretty much all threat from his character. The UK character was threatening because of the slow and deliberate way he spoke, and the way he slowly waddles from place to place while still catching up. I don't think anyone has mentioned this, but the conflict of Wilson has been hinted at since the beginning. He's spent the last five years erasing himself from anything. The internet, banking records, licenses. He wasn't just invisible but he was an empty glass jar. His character was someone who will be heavily influenced by the course of the show. Being lied to by his friends, tortured by Lee and Arby, the death of his Father and Letts explaining what Corvadt's main goals are filled that jar. THis transformation into the antagonist at the end of the first season is sad to see, but it's 100% justified when it does happen.

its a dumb idea lol, there is no plan for what would happen after and by looking at the history of eugenics u can kinda predict this wouldnt end well. if we lose THAT much of the population we will struggle to survive and it will just cause suffering. there will not be enough people to maintain the systems we depend on, and why would we think we wouldnt go right back to making the same bad choices that got us here in the first place? you have to fix the systems causing this, or people will just continue to live unsustainably. the fear of overpopulation is not well founded and kind of outdated, we dont have a food shortage we have surplus food that doesnt get to everyone for political and transportation reasons. if you want to do climate stalinism this is not the way to go about it lmao this is just regular eugenics

A lot of the fear in the original comes from ambiguity. The fear of having a man you don't know ask questions about a woman you don't know, slowly and painfully. We don't get that as the audience in the US remake. We know who Jessica Hide is, and so there's no fear there. In addition, I think that the US version lacks a lot of the sophistication that the villains have. Lee and Pietre are so frightening because they are cold, emotionless, and methodical. Always very calm and clean. US Rod and Arby are nothing like this.

The genophage was a good thing to bring up, because the writers of Mass Effect actually wrestle with this concept better. Like Janus, the genophage was designed to maintain a stable population--just keep living like normal, trying to have kids like normal, and enough children will be born to keep everything steady. But that's not what happened--removing the ability to have kids from most krogan robbed their lives of meaning. So many of them no longer cared, went off to live lives entirely based around gratification, with absolutely no concern for survival. On the other hand, some clans did try to cope with it, by treating women like baby factories, hoarding them to try and grow armies to use against the other clans. The result was immense societal breakdown; even their own, few sacred traditions were cast aside by a race now bitter and fatalistic. Of course, this was done in self-defense, against an aggressor that was killing millions, by a bunch of other races, so the situation is not exactly the same. But the idea that you could neuter 90-95% of the human race and expect things to continue on as normal, for some kind of gradual reduction in population to a more sustainable level, is crazy, for all the same reasons they give for why a lack of resources will lead to violence. If you think fighting for limited supplies of oil and copper would be brutal, imagine the fighting over fertile women, over the ability of groups to maintain their existence or even thrive, at least relative to their neighbors. The whole planet would erupt in violence, as groups (nations, religions, whatever) fought for what they believe to be their very survival. Those able to have kids would be sequestered in bunkers, churning out children--those who can't would likely find themselves essentially enslaved, unless they were lucky enough to get into a position of power. If nukes start flying, well, there goes the whole "It's for the planet" excuse. Not to mention, what if it works TOO well? What if EVERYONE is infertile, or such a massive percentage that the human race can't survive? Whoops!

Show cancellations are generally the most frustrating and baseless stifling of art we are privy to in the modern world. We get to see on the low end millions of dollars thrown into a project to see an idea come to life, an entire season at the least of story being established, then because sales figures are a percent lower than investors were hoping for they cancel it, leaving the story in limbo entirely by choice and abandoning the IP because if something doesn't make fast money then it is scary and might not ever make money and we all know art is no place for risks.
@harrisonhaine11993 жыл бұрын
and then they spend hundreds of millions on superhero trash
@MidlifeCrisisJoe3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, no, that's idiotic. There are tons of awful, just, completely awful pieces of trash that no one watches because they are bad and which get rightfully canceled because no one watches them. Pretending every cancellation is some razor thin margin where it was only 1% lower than a suit's expected profit margin and some unjust "stifling of art" is hyperbolic rhetoric of the most hysterical kind. 90% of all "art" produced is crap. Most of it should be canceled after episode 1, the first draft, or while it's still stuck in the no-talent hack who's going to splurt it onto the world's head. Acting like audience reactions (which ARE the market solution known as ratings) are bad is elevating far too many pieces of tripe for the sake of a much, much smaller amount of decent art that goes unrecognized.

I'm a bit late to the party as usual. A couple of years ago (this is August 2024) Utopia came to my attention and I was so blown away I bought both series in a boxed set from Amazon. No cuts, proper ration, extras etc. I watch it at least twice a year as I never tire of it. I was so interested in the major theme I went and learnt about the Malthusian Disaster. Co-incidentally, I had re-watched both series just before I found this video. I even tried episode 1 of the USA version and you are quite correct - there is no comparison, I really enjoyed your take on Utopia. I will give you the highest compliment I can..........the British version brought me to tears several times, so did your video, for all the right reasons. The problem with a series as sublimely brilliant as Utopia is that nothing else comes close. I am doomed to watch mediocrity. But thank you for your hard work, it took me two nights but there was no way I wasn't going see it to the end, Cheers Sir!

The series seems quite good but their plan for controlling the population seems kinda odd. If you think about it outside the West people do birth many children but child mortality is high and the average age is low. The West, as we all know, is the opposite. We have an absurd amount of elderly whilst having a rather low birth rate which is often boosted by non-Western immigrants. If you wanted to control the population by focusing on the West you’d need to start by culling the old, kinda like the vikings did. We are already doing it in a way with medication. Given how the elderly tend to have various health issues at once the different medications can pretty much kill them. Not to mention that there are many situations that prolong life at the expense of quality, all while putting a tremendous burden on the economy and young generations. Point is that culling the elderly is actually quite necessary if we are talking about population control. Now we have two options. Either we don’t employ any other policies and just keeping controlling the elder population since their lives have been devalued due to old age, or we take the chance to start controlling birth rates so that we don’t have to be killing the elderly. Controlling birth rates would be much more humane and it wouldn’t require sterilization. All this could be employed in a long-term plan where it could happen at a rather natural rate (just accelerated), thus making it a bit more ethical than it actually is (refer to the whole culling the elderly thing). I personally don’t think that over population is as problematic as people think. Without enough resources a species starts dying until their population reaches a sustainable number. With more people in the West we would have more people studying and developing more efficient technology (would be nice to also motivate the population to actually study useful degrees too). The non-Wester countries will self-regulate due to their own lack of a safe environment so them having more children isn’t an actual threat if they are kept underdeveloped (which most likely will happen).

We stan these bad guys. They are well written and they spittin straight facts and people cant stop having 4 kids for no reason even though they live in a first world country and are plenty well off. Even close family members of my own have done it. Im almost done with his season one analysis on this video but damn so far im almost with the bad guys. I wouldn’t bring this situation about myself but I wouldn’t fight it either. Its a thing I’ve been concerned about along with most scientists, especially as one in a mentally unwell state in general. The way they go about it isn’t okay but if something like this naturally occurred without shooting hundreds of random people for no reason and possibly a genetic mutation or something we cant even really be mad at that point. Edit: nvm the whole nazi shit is wack definitely don’t stan HOW/WHAT they’re saying/doing for these things… if you’re going to prevent humans from breeding you shouldn’t be able to select WHO does get to reproduce. It’s still 500mil ppl. Even if some bad diseases get left in the genome thats NATURE. Granted, you want to make sure all 500mil don’t ALL have crippling genetic problems but otherwise it needs to be almost if not entirely pure random.

I think Milner expected a very different answer to this question in 3:15:33 and her gestures show that. Like if Wilson had said that he sees a harmless middle aged woman or literally any other response than calling her a murderer she would segue into appearances being deceiving. Except Wilson is not blind to the damage she has done, he is just turning a blind eye to it (ha ha get it?) and is fixated on that aspect of the network’s methods, after all he lost his eye, father and sense of normalcy to these same methods. And you can see Milner’s disposition switch from being comforting and reassuring to being cold and defensive.

1:43:00 I think R.B.'s "don't look" shooting style may have actually evolved out of that. The actor tries the firearm out and flinches, and thinks of how *a child* would deal with the stimuli shock, let alone the horror of looking at someone you are killing. He's been doing this since he was a kid, his whole *assassination style* is something a kid would need to do: walk right up to someone unsuspecting, get up close and turn away from the loud bang, then leave the area --and suppress that trauma!-- Doesn't need to suppress it since he's numb to it... though they establish the character didn't really *like* doing it, and had a constant inner struggle over it. "Turning a blind eye" to the murders he commits, literally, seems pretty fitting.
