I loved Zenos because in the many beautiful villains in FFXIV, he’s a simple man in terms of goals and wants only 3 things. You, him, and a wide space to kill one another. He has no interest in fighting your friends, he cares not for the Empire, he doesn’t even care for the Gods. He wants solely you because you provided the only meaningful challenge in his entire life.

Part of its status of being under appreciated I think because its themes do not always strike a chord with the audience. It’s hard to relate to Lyse unless you’ve been in the same position. For me that was the case, going “home” and wanting to help but not knowing how, facing hostility on one side and expectations high enough to drown in on the other. For many people they are already home ethnically and so don’t know that cloying feeling of being and not being a part of a group for ethnic reasons and the exhaustion of trying to participate and change to fit it but being hurt by the people you want to call family. It’s not an accident that three main characters, Lyse and Fordola and Yotsuyu are all outsiders of their own groups in some capacity and suffer from both outside their group and within their group. The way all of them answer this pressure and each other (+Hien and Gotetsu) really made this expansion for me. It felt so very much like my own young years learning to navigate two cultural worlds while being myself.

Sadly she was heavily tossed away and varely even mencioned after 6.1 and the moments she varely appears, raubaun is there too, and he is the ones who talks and shows leadership. Its difficult to relate with a character thats so heavily upon positivism that it almost relies on the absurd. There many points, were she acts and behaves as if we werent on a war and her development is minimal. As others put it, her development resets when we are back on Gyr Abania, back to square one, just like how she was before we went to the far east

Lyse as a concept is a very solid character, the problem I believe some people have, and I do share is that her arrival in Gyr Abania comes across as naive at best and condescending at worst. To explain for anyone unaware, here is some cool backstory for you. Lyse's father was Curtis Hext, an Ala Mhigan resistance leader during the Garlean Invasion of Gyr Abania some 25-30 years ago during the Year 1557 of the Sixth Astral Era. (time is wonky in FFXIV and this is the best I can do to pin things down, please bear with.) Seeking to help their people Curtis and Lyse's older sister Yda took to fighting back against the Garlean occupation and smuggled civilians out of Gyr Abania whenever they could, first amongst them was Lyse. Lyse was at her oldest about a toddler when she was removed from Gyr Abania and while they were denied protection in the Black Shroud (Gridania) they ended up travelling to Dravania where they found themselves in the city-state of New Sharlayan and promptly joined up with Louisoix and Papalymo and granted sanctuary. Lyse doesn't remember Gyr Abania directly, Lyse lived for over two decades in Sharlayan, and is around 25-29 years old as of now. Almost everything she remembers is from stories she was told, or from her sister whenever she came to visit. her sister Yda became an Archon (pretty prestigious rank in Sharlayan) and would work with Papalymo in the Circle of Knowing, the predecessor organization to the Scions. some time later, around 1571 according to official accounts, Yda would be killed trying to smuggle more refugees out of Gyr Abania (including one Fordola). Lyse as you might expect, having lost her father Curtis years ago, and now having lost Yda takes this incredibly bad. the reason you meet 'Yda' through ARR, and the patch content of HW is because Papalymo lets her wear Yda's mask and. Trigger warning for this next bit as it's pretty unsettling. Lyse proceeds to pretend to be her dead sister as a coping mechanism and Papalymo just agrees to this, everyone else in the circle of knowing sees through it immediately and just lets it happen. So not only is Lyse someone who has never truly grown up in Ala Mhigo unlike her family, she has lived knowing only stories, and idolizations of her heroic sister and has no clue what the struggle of the Ala Mhigans are like. Lyse, who looks very little like her Father because of her paler skin, blonde hair and bright eyes (Ala Mhigans are very tan and often have black/brown skin.), comes into a land she has never truly 'lived in' having only heard stories for twenty years, and immediately questions why the villagers wouldn't rebel, why they would live with these conditions if they were truly so horrible. Lyse always means well, but her criticisms comes a place of ignorance which she has to shake off, her idolization of her sister which she's lived with for years, 'Yda' as you know her in ARR is something of a kind bit ditzy person. Something I think comes from Lyse's child-like views of her sister and not the fierce rebel and insurrectionist her sister truly was. If we want to go a little harsher, I believe people look at her behavior as akin to the classic Mary Antoinette line of "well if the peasants are starving let them eat cake." ignoring the fact people cannot even have bread. While also having some, *arguably* unpleasant connotations of Lyse having a 'Savior' complex born from wanting the best for her people and being in a place to serve not as a proper leader, but as a figurehead as the daughter of Curtis Hext and sister to Yda Hext. Who were seen as heroes. Lyse is not them, and her criticisms of others such as Fordola or the villagers for their actions show she does not understand anything about what it's really like. As a concept I really do think Lyse has some potential, but as a person she can be absolutely abrasive with her ignorance and lack of empathy or self-awareness. and needs alot of work before she can get past her trauma and her confirmation biases.

@@ebonarez7734 Part of her character development is her realizing that she's not suitable for that position, and bringing Raubhan in to handle that aspect of it. She's definitely struggling to find her own identity as an Ala Mihgan, and it appears that her current path to that is through the rebuilding of the Temple of the Fist, along with the remaining other survivors. This gets explored a little bit in the monk storyline and capstone role quest at 80. Hoping they don't abandon it entirely, since it's the last chance for Lyse to really have her own growth.

I actually really enjoyed SB. No not more than HW or Shb and now EW, but it is by no means bad. I like how the story was a little more grounded and not around saving the world or we all die . It's an xpac of world building and it felt more like you were going on an adventure. I hope the next xpac is one more of adventure and exploration

Really, the biggest problem with SB is that it's sandwiched between HW and ShB, but it has its own upsides. Story is like a 7/10 instead of a 9.5, but you get better trials, much better dungeons, ultimates and other stuff. And I'd say 4.1-4.3 more than makes up for the story shortcomings of 4.0

The story appealed to me more than Heavensward did. Heavensward story was all over the place. Every time you think you're getting somewhere, you're dragged off to somewhere completely different to resolve one of the story's way too many B-plots.

Not really. Its biggest problem to mewas that it tried to combine two different story and make it cohesive. But, its strength lies with how grounded it is and focuses more on human drama rather than cosmic horror which is what I prefer more. I remembered liking it more than Heavensward back on launch since it reminds me of Suikoden. Granted, it chaged of course, since after replaying all the expansion prior to endwalker, I ended up liking Heavensward more than the rest.

I like Lyse. She's super imperfect and bratty but her self awareness and her resilience when shit hits the fan makes her very reliable and relatable. The only frontline (ex) Scion that did not get captured or sent onto an hospital bed ever.

Your explanation is, in part, why so many people have criticisms about it. The Doma, Yotsuyu, Steppe, and Fordola segments were spectacular, but they were kinda chopped in half by a plethora of poorly paced sections as well. That's not to say that the Ala Mhigo and Lyse segments were by any means awful, but it felt like two halves poorly stitched together than one cohesive story.

I second Blackfox it's not that any part of it is bad it is that it is two expansions stitched together in a bad way. If there was an Ala Mhigo expansion after Heavensward and then have Stormblood just be the Othard story ending with the war that would have worked so much better. Not to mention that it would have given Lyse more time to connect with the players in her new role and more time to Asahi who I felt got way to little screen time for how important he was at the end of Stormblood. Even the trailer shows the problem every expansion has 1 official job except for Stormblood which had Monk and Samurai.

I honestly think Stormblood has even stronger character moments/ high points than Heavensward. The biggest thing that drags it down below the other expansions is pacing. I think the story either needed to be expanded to potentially two expansions, or it should have been smaller with some of the fluff cut out. As it is, it feels unnecessarily long in some parts and lacking development in others. But it's a solid expansion that perfectly sets up an even better one.

It was two expansions initially, but in development they had to really cut down due to time restraints and other factors, so major characters like the ala mhigan scientist (ala mhigo dungeon boss 2) got cut out, or in the case of the Qiqirn beast tribe, the area was designed to include them, but they got cut from SB and moved to ShB. There was a hell of a lot more, but SB is two expansions shoved into one, for better or for worse

To this day I still stand by SB being a better experience than HW. At least for me anyway. I wasn't that connected to the broader FFXIV community at the time, so I didn't even realize it was underrated at all until around the time ShB came out. And as good as ShB is, it wasn't until near the end of the game that I was certain I liked it better than SB. Playing Endwalker now has also kind of reinforced my feelings for SB. EW unsurprisingly makes use of a lot of returning characters, and the overwhelming majority of the ones I've been most excited to see show up are from SB. Also, Lyse still might be my second favorite scion, only knocked down from the top by the most recent addition. ShB and EW have done a lot to endear me to the rest of the scions, but I still have a soft spot for Lyse. My only disappointment is that they chose to write her out of the main story at the end of SB. I would to see what they would done with her as a main scion in ShB and EW.

How? Shadowbringers exists. Outside of the Azim Steppes tribes I'm not really sure it even has much world building. Ala Mhigo and Doma is already established before this, Hingashi is new but also barely touched on. What does it add exactly?

It doesn't elaborate on the nature of magic, nor the origins and motivations of the ascians, nor the source and it's shards, nor the origins of any of the races etcetc. The only thing it does is add jingashi, flesh out some cultures that we largely already knew of and do some catastrophic building of the Garleans to make them incompetent and straight up evil. Apparently Gaius was the exception not the rule. It does the absolutely bare minimum for world building, yet OP claims it's the biggest for world building.

Personally I have to disagree this time, I've been a huge lore guy for the past 6 years that I spent on this game, and EW msq had its big cool moments but was so disappointing for me. Not for the themes or where they decided to take the plot, that was good, but the how. How they decided to get us and the plot there to those high-points. There's 3 scenes or so on top of that that make zero sense or contrast previous lore that had been established thru certain dialogues as recentry as SHB msq. Myself and other people in my group that are used to speculating and lore theorycrafting could only make sense of WHY those scenes happened a certain way by making absolute huge reaches to the point of fanfic to make it fit with previous information. Overall the expansion was good but the MSQ was my least favourite. I did like the introductory arcs of each zone, the garlean part and most of the ending tho.

Not my fav character, but I liked her a lot. I got her and understood since I felt her every time she was angry at the state of Ala and the empire. It was nice having a scion who was just down to sock someone in the face who was a dick regardless of the consequences which is something I felt my Chara would’ve done.

THANK YOU! Stormblood is an excellent expansion. It just has the odd misfortune of being sandwiched between the two even more excellent expansions of Heavensward and Shadowbringers with HW in this case being a very tough act to follow. And let's not forget the amount of setup that was done in Stormblood for the next two expansions to follow through on.

I like Lyse, but that is probably more to do with me being a 1.0 player and doing most of the side content. I can see how people who rushed through ARR would not exactly like her or be sympathetic to her. She was just the person in MSQ who said dumb things with a annoying voice actor. She didn't exactly have a good platform to endear herself to those players before Stormblood.

I am SO GRATEFUL that my thalassophobia only kicks in when seeing real life deep waters. Video game underwater sections? Totally fine with. On a boat IRL? So long as I can see the shore. Seeing video footage of underwater and you do not know how deep it is, only able to tell it's at least hundreds of feet deep? I can feel my pulse quicken just writing that.

I disliked Lyse but by the end of Stormblood I was somewhere between indifferent and liking her. If she died I probably wouldn't be moved... although knowing Square they will make me love her before killing her off, because this company is full of sadists.

Stormblood had by far the most foreshadowing moments in sidequests ever. it's actually quite spoilery sometimes when you can make simple connections but to pay this off you have to actually play the content in SB not just the raids and MSQ. Such good stories that most of the playerbase will never even see. I rank SB higher than HW for that reason.

I loved my entire journey in XIV. Even ARR and SB, even though it doesn't have those major moments like HW, SHB or EW it's still fantastic and has it's own thing going. Kugane is my favorite city in the game and I had tons of fun with the entire eastern vibe.

The problem with Storm Blood it's that its first stretch ends with such an amazing climax, arguably the best first act of all the expansions, for the first time the WoL is put against the wall, the same WoL that fought Nidhogg and primals with barely breaking a sweat. But then the plot just takes a huge dip, most of Doma is a wild goose chase, basicaly nothing happens until the very end, and even though it goes with a bang by that time most people already wrote it off as worse than Heavensward. And the patch cicle had the same problem that ARR had, it felt aimless until the last few missions.

Stormblood was VERY VERY good. The job balance, the trials, the dungeons, the raids where INCREDIBLE. It just has the """weakest""" story by virtue of something needing to be the weakest, so it gets looked down upon a bit, probably due to its pacing. Also Pyro I just want to say thank you so much for uploading to youtube. I have been following your journey via youtube almost exclusively because streams are just not my thing.
