When the edge is white, does that mean the gradient is positive and that also means that the pixels change from black to white? And the opposite means the gradient is negative?

upon combining both x and y sobel gradients, why did u not use the sobel-magnitude formula of sqrt(sqrd(xsobel)+sqrd(ysobel))?
