I call the MG Round Tail the barrel hunter. It’s fast and loves a steep clean face no matter the size of the wave. If the wave is throwing a lip, most likely you can get covered. However, the board hates a flat section or fat waves. It’s an extremely fun board in the right conditions. This is my experience at least, I hope it helps someone considering buying this board.

Ive got this board as my daily driver. Been surfing with it for a couple months. From my experience it is an extremely fun board when the waves are glassy and more hollow (at least 3 ft) If you buy one MG, even in the squash tail set, for surfing on messy average, fat waves, it is not going to go well, the board feels stuck and got no drive in these conditions, this board is not a groveller, it asks good waves. Put that on your mind when ordering it. Now that Ive got my board for good pumping waves, been looking for a real groveller now 😂

In 1-3’ surf I always prefer EPS/Epoxy for that extra pop and projection through turns. The Squash Tail offered great flow and felt good in overhead surf…. Due to the clean conditions. For 4-7’ surf I prefer PU/Poly and the Round Tail felt solid in bigger surf with good flow too.

This board looks rad. I like flat decks and hips. I'm 6'2" and 175lbs - intermediate surfer looking for a daily driver. Also 50 years old and wear a 4/3 most of the year so a bit of extra float is good for me. Thinking of ordering a custom 6'1" x 20.25 x 2 7/16 daily driver for weirdo reef waves and beach breaks. Want to hit about 33L +/-. Any thoughts appreciated and thanks for the review. Thin and wider boards tend to work best for tall, lanky folks like me.
@surfnshowreviews7777
@surfnshowreviews7777 2 жыл бұрын
Well the MG is not wide and thin… and it’s a bit on the shorter side. I think you can stretch it out a bit and keep the volume close to your favorite HPSB or Daily Driver. I suggest stretching a custom in length 1-2” keeping the width similar to the closest stock dims and maybe thin it out a bit. If that doesn’t work then have a look at the Phantom.

Great review. Thank you for the awesome content. Between the mini ghost and the sub driver 2.0, which do you think is a better all rounder? I live in South Florida and surf central florida all the time. I also travel to Nica and Brazil about once a year for some better waves. Any major things about the two I should know about? I'm 6'1 173lbs and usually surf with boards around 30L. The mini ghost stock dims would put me at a board that is 5'9 (30.5L) vs the sub driver 2.0 5'11 with 29.25L. Any advice? Thank you so much!

I thinking to take either a 6‘2 mini ghost or phantom XL on a year surftrip. Both have around the same liters. What would you recommend more? I thought about a round mini ghost so I can progress an play around with different fin setups if i want to loose it up or give mor speed. Squash seems to be the better daily driver but not sure if it holds up if I end up on good reef breaks with decent sizes. The MG Squash Tail surfs small waves better due to it being shorter. The wider tail block on the MG Squash carries more speed down the line and the hip offers quicker pivot top to bottom compared to the Phantom. The MG Round Tail offers more hold and traction due to tail shape and the tail being narrower than the Phantom. The MG also has a bit more tail rocker compared to the Phantom. I noticed both MG sleds surfing top to bottom better than the Phantom. When the waves are 5-7’ then you might like the extra rail line of your Phantom better.

Hey Noel. Sick review. I am trying to decide between the mini ghost or the Inferno 72. Both look super fun, but the Inferno keeps sticking out. My hang up is that I surf in really cold water so need some extra volume, therefore usually between 31 and 32 liters. That pushes me into a 6'0 Inferno or a 5'10 mini ghost. I'm 5'11 and don't love surfing boards longer than me. Should that push me into the MG or get that hangup out of my head? Plan on using from thigh high to slightly head.

My MG Squash tail coming at 5’4” makes it more maneuverable in smaller surf compared to the RW Sq Tail. Both carry similar speed but the MG offers quicker pivot in transition due to the Hip and shorter rail line. The D2 is stock 5’4” for me too so with the hip so similar performance in the pocket but I think the D2 has a little more entry rocker and narrower tail block… so the MG Squash tail might be a tad faster down the line. The D2 is smoother rail to rail with better flow as a Quad and twin + trailer but not as a Thruster. I like the D2 better in 4-6’ surf compared to the MG Squash… the D2 is more sensitive on rail but only as a Quad.

An HPSB is for good, clean (often steep) wave conditions like 4-8’+. A daily driver is your go-to board that could work in small-ish, mid, and large-ish conditions on an average swell that may have some bump on the surface or flatter sections. It’s just not designed (I.e. less rocker) to be super dynamic on clean firing waves like a HPSB. Hope that helps.

Noel, this video was incredible as usual! I'm a beginner-intermediate surfer, and currently have an 8' wavestorm (foamie longboard). I'm from SoCal (Oceanside/San Clemente area), I'm 15 1/2 years old, I weigh 130lbs, and I'm 5'10" (I should be continuing to grow), and I can struggle to keep the board under control when getting thrown around in the more powerful surf due to the 8' foamies very high volume. But I like my dads Puddle Jumper from lost surfboards on occasion (5' 11", 41.75 liters; so I still can't duck dive or anything like that). I think my main problem is paddling out, and getting through the breaking waves. Do you have any tips for me, and what might the next board be that I should look ford? Would you recommend going for a used or new board? Also, winter is basically here, and I only have a 2/2mm summer suit from Xcel. Do you have any recommendations on wetsuits? Thanks to anyone who might reply, and have a great day everyone! 🏄🤙
@pokerisbananas5734
@pokerisbananas5734 2 жыл бұрын
Yo Ezra. I've been surfing 10 years and started around your age. Happy to help answer some of your questions. 1) If your problem is paddling out, there's two ways to get around that. First you should work on improving your timing to avoid getting hit by sets and when you decide to jump on your board and start your paddle out, REALLY GO FOR IT paddling hard. Other thing you should do in addition to working on your timing is getting a board that is low enough volume for you to duck dive under sets. IF you can ride your dad's puddle jumper with good control, you could aim for something with less volume that you could duck dive for your next board. 2) Used boards are great while you're learning since you're goal is to progress to smaller boards quickly and boards are expensive. Buy one, master it until you feel like you could use more maneuverability, and then sell it to afford the next one. 3) Get yourself a 4/3mm wetsuit for the winter. You'll get in the water more knowing you wont be freezing your butt off. Every surf brand has an outlet store somewhere with last season's models for a BIG DISCOUNT. Rip Curl wetsuits fits my build best which sounds like you are long and skinny too so I would recommend them for your suit. Best of luck buddy ~Michael

Great surfing on this board, looks so fun and inspiring!! And thank you so much for all the great content. I‘m thinking to either buy a Phantom or MG Round Tail (both around 30 liters). I’m surfing the Astro Pop and I love this board in smaller waves. Now I’m looking for a board when the waves are a bit bigger or punchier. My level is intermediate to advanced. I’m riding the Monsta Box 2020 for those occasions but I feel it really needs a punchy wave and it’s not so easy to surf. Would you rather suggest the Phantom or the MG Round Tail in this case? Noel - as always you figured out how to shred the heck out of this board. My question is in the naming being misleading to me. Why mini "ghost" and not mini "phantom"? This board, other than width, doesn't seem to have many characteristics of the ghost or ghost XL. Low rocker and full rails to me take it out of the category of a board I would want for hollow punchy waves. Obviously you could rip on a piece of plywood. How do you compare this board to the BV2 in performance. Seemingly designed for similar waves but the MG coming in significantly shorter in length/volume. Thanks as always and happy holidays brother!
@surfnshowreviews7777
@surfnshowreviews7777 2 жыл бұрын
The MG has a bit more tail rocker compared to the Phantom so it will offer more traction and performance in the pocket. The MG Squash also has a wider tail block to carry more speed down the line in smaller waves, it also has the hip to pivot off of. Don’t forget the Mg is shorter so you put it in the lip quicker compared to the Phantom in smaller waves. As you can see the MG Squash and Phantom are way different. The BV2 has a wider outline and wider nose with less overall rocker compared to the MG Squash Tail. So it will paddle better, carry more speed, and Grovel better with a Twin + Trailer set up. The MG Squash will surf top to bottom better and offer more versatility in the pocket.

Appreciate the review! Having the whole range of Pyzel (Phantom Shadow, Ghost), I reckon this board not to be ideal for me, the boxy rails is something I don't need on my homebreak. Instead looking to go the epoxy route for my small wave quiver, riding the Phantom at the same dims. The Phantom is the closest related to the Ghost which is the board of choice in the right season 6 - 10ft and jumping on a 6'2 over 10ft. The Shadow is there for the steep juicy 4 to 6ft steep pockety waves, where you just want to throw it around more. It has more trouble going through flat sections, even in powerful waves. Hence the Phantom is perfect for that. In between the Phantom and Shadow could sit another board, something more tailored to smaller conditions, and then my eyes would be on a Mayhem, possibly "the Driver 2.0" or the "Pocket Rocket 2.0 roundpin proformance". I'm just trying to figure out a board when the Phantom (EPS) won't work, in tiny conditions. Considering the Astro Pop indeed for those days, but perhaps its good to mixed it all up with something totally different like the Album Twinsman that could very versatile covering much more wave size and types if I feel like playing a bit more. For me the mini Ghost is more of the same I really don't need. My Pyzel’s: Phantom sits at 5'9 x 18.88 x 2.30 The Shadow sits at 5'10 x 18.75 x 2 5/16 The Ghost sits at 5'11 x 18.75 x 2.40 Another Ghost at 6’2 x 18.75 x 2 1/2 With this quiver I surf anywhere from Canggu to Padang Padang and Uluwatu. I could use a 6’6 next step for bigger Uluwatu but I rather surf Padang Padang when it’s a 6’6 day at Ulu’s, at Padang2 a 6’2 is more than enough. I'm 5'9 and a tad heavier than Noel surfing half a liter more ranging from 26L to a low 27L for the daily boards and 28L to 30L for both smaller and bigger waves. Good to have Noel doing this, it does make my life much easier!

Hey Stephen, It seems that we ride and like similar style boards. Regarding the mayhems, I tried the driver 2.0 and it was ok even though the glass job is really weak. I sold it and bought a ghost swallow tail which is a lot more forgiving than the ghost and the driver as it performs even when the waves are not as big and goes well on flat sections. If you surf punchy conditions even when it is small with the eventual little barrel, I would say you are going to love the mini ghost round tail. I tried most fcs2 fins, but for me the magic is with the al merrick fins. I have been riding the lost rocket redux when it is gutless and it makes surfing very fun. But the Pyzel’s glassing is much better than Lost’s. I hope it helps. Cheers.

So ended up getting a 5'10 squash 31.7L as I wanted it more as a small wave performance board, and got it in Epoxy (I'm 192cm, 84kgs). Ran it as a Thruster first with large mayhem fins and weirdly the board felt TERRIBLE, it pivoted well, but just had absolutely no drive which I couldn't believe given its shape and in EPS. I then went back out with my trusty large AM fins and although slightly more drive, it honestly still felt dreadful (surf was about 3ft). I could hardly get any drive to even lay a turn. So I made my way home and threw in a quad set up and FINALLY the board came alive. Might eventually try a twin + stabiliser. But for me it just has to be surfed as a quad. I've been riding a driver 2.0 for 3 years, so not sure if it's just a transition to a shorter fatter board, but I felt like I needed 6ft plus for it to get speed as a Thruster! Was super fun with the quad though!

Hi Noel Mini ghost squash vs Chilli BV2?
@surfnshowreviews7777
@surfnshowreviews7777 Жыл бұрын
Tough one… both boards are epic. For 1-6’ surf and emphasis on 1-3’ surf then go BV2. If your focus is more on 3-6’ surf then go MG

@@marcoriva6429 thanks bro. I just ordered a custom down here in Hawaii. I couldnt wait, I usually wait for noels review but watching dane reynolds blast on the 74 made me really want to get it, being the highline is a modern 74. Thanks for chiming-in bro. If you dont mind, what kind of conditions do you ride it. Also dims and your weight.

Hey Noel trying to do a Bali quiver for, hoping I can go, next year. I already have a ghost 6’1 for when the waves get bigger, I have a 5’10 driver 2.0 squash and I was thinking to do a custom mini ghost what do you suggest a round or squash for the waves at Bali? I am 5’10 and weights 156lb usually my boards have around 29L. Thanks in advance and keep it up with the excellent work 👏🏻👏🏻

If the waves are hollow then Round Tail… and roughly the same volume as your Driver 2

Read my comments above, I live in Bali. Pyzel’s has been my go to boards since 2018 As for a mini Ghost you have 2 options. Longer outline. Go 1 or 2 inch shorter and retain the same dimensions as on your daily board. You will have the advantage of having more volume under your chest giving stability and aid in paddling. But retain the longer rail as it generally look better on an open face. Shorter boards is all fine and well but you should get some footage of yourself. And see if you really need to go shorter. Sometimes it’s not the answer. I’ve learned that after watching my own footage and having a coach analysing the footage, surfing a 5’7 dumpster diver copy. I immediately retired that board and went for 5’10 and 5’9 as a minimum for performance boards. I do have smaller boards 5’5 but that’s just a novelty board. Shorter outline. If you have a 5’10 driver you could go down 2 inches of the length. Then you would have a 5’8 x 19 1/4 x 2 1/2 29.8L The question is why would you? I’m terms of pure dimensions you could go even shorter to 5’6 at 27.90L Ask yourself if you need all that volume and foam in Bali? I follow the same philosophy as Noel on rather retaining the same amount of volume and dimensions for the waves I want to surf and how I want to surf it. Going up in volume will help to get you more waves but also makes you rather lazy, and makes your body move slower. Kelly Slater has been surfing roughly the dimensions for the last 10 to 15 years. And he still surfs really sharp for someone almost 50. Granted my quiver is tailored for bali and indo waves, when living in Sydney Australia my boards weren’t really good. Or rather, I could use some more foam. So got a bunch of Mayhems for summer waves in Sydney, and that worked, going with just a liter more. But then having them in Bali they were obsolete. The rather full boxy rails were bogging me, and ultimately ditch a bunch of Mayhems. The sharp rails on the ghost and phantom worked phenomenally. So that’s why I don’t see the need to go back to boards which were designed for California waves rather than Indo waves. I reckon Mayhems to be really good boards and super useful in conditions similar to California or Sydney Australia with tons of beach breaks. So if your serious about surfing bali and really want to bigger and powerful waves, the mini ghost won’t be the board of choice. If you want surf it at home as well, it might make sense to go up in volume to cover for the times if you need to wear wetsuits. Basically it’s a liter extra for a wetsuit and an extra liter if the wave drops to less than 5-6ft and another liter if you surf waves roughly 7 to 8 seconds period.

@@stephenwouw8624 What you think about the shadow for Bali ?
@stephenwouw8624
@stephenwouw8624 2 жыл бұрын
@@invistacompeu5292 it’s a good board, but need a face or rather steep sections, that’s where the shadow excels. When it’s full slopey waves with flat sections you really have to work to make sections. Therefore the Phantom is better. A bit more allround.
