Thats the problem. I can't tell where its coming from. Could be something my computer is doing since it seems to happen in intervals. Could be coming from the electrical outlet, the usb camera connection, who knows. Its likely to happen again. Frustrating.

I know this is old, but I'm catching up and revisiting. I was delighted to hear you talking about M Graham's passion in choosing pigments. It was you, very early in my w/col experiments who put me onto these paints, and I loved them then but more and more as I develop my watercolour. I still think of myself as a beginner because I've had some major (health) breaks in between painting times, but once I got over being intimidated by w/colour I've never looked back. Thank you for that recommendation, and for so much more...esp 'discovery'.

Steve,,,the hint you mention of blotting the brush from the side..getting out water but not pigment, is one of your most valuable to me. Whether using pure Kolinsky or a squirrel and synthetic mix, it's super..thanks!! I use it every time I paint!

Thanks so much for the Q&A session. It was very encouraging to hear how you work painting in between other necessities of life. It is so easy to feel that other artists spend all day every day working and producing. And I could relate to your need to experiment. Sometimes it seems that is all I accomplish, but my mind has to try things to see what works. I appreciate your approachable attitude. Blessing!

I just found this video in my playlist and will be buying products from it. I wish I knew earlier, because I have been searching on my own and have been very confused as to what brushes are the best, paper, and paint. I did purchase the watercolor book you showed and its very excellent, wish I could have bought it here to give you credit, and Arches paper. I will need some brushes I own a smaller for Kolinsky brush, but need bigger sizes to hold water for my paints, and I do have a Skillshare account and will take your 2 classes on there too. Thank you for your amazing teaching skills and willingness to share your amazing gift to someone like me who is on my own journey to learn art!

Another great video Steve. "How do I decide what to paint? As a professional photographer I get this question a lot and it seems to fit watercolor painting as well. Finding your/a style to me is the question here, I think. There seems to be a discovery period in all art and then, after some time, you put it all together, and then you know what you know. Then you go forward, and become a Artist. I'm learning that lesson here in watercolor. And its (art) fun again. Thanks Steve.

Thanks for watching and the input. Yeah, I need to get some kinks out. But really thats pretty typical of live streaming. Ideally a moderator would read questions. I've seen that done. I need to be able to respond to impromptu questions in the moment because something I say often brings a question to a viewers mind. A clarification or further understanding, etc.

I realize this video is from way back, but I wanted to comment on what you said about galleries. My daughter has a fine art degree and was accepted into galleries, but there’s nothing easy about it. Some were coops and she had to work so many hours in the gallery to help support it. She was accepted into a gallery in New York City only to find she would be required to pay a monthly fee plus they would charge about 50% commission on anything sold.

Schmincke watercolors are known to be the exact same formulation as its pan version, so can be much less expensive if filled from the tube. Windsor Newton pan formulation is very different than their tubes, so pan filling from tube is not recommended by the company. Like You, my favorite watercolor paint is M. Graham, (but I use Daniel Smith's for fieldwork and filling pans as the Graham can drool a bit in the carrying.) Both these companies are known for their wide color selection, saturation and single source and lightfast colors. I've done watercolors (mostly for studies and quick sketches) in conjunction with oils for more than 40 years and have been satisfied using round sable brushes only, so It's great to see the mops. I've overhauled my traditional palette, trying to get rid of some of the heavy metals (cadmiums and cobalts.) I've ended with about two thirds new colors with a steep but fun learning curve. Pyrrol Scarlet (orange) is wonderful, as is quinacridone gold, perylene maroon and anthraquinone blue. Thanks for the entertaining and informative videos!

As I watched I kept hoping you might mention more about quill brush sizes, paper size being proportionate for each, which brush size you'd recommend for which paper size and was also hoping you'd mention specialty brushes such as daggers and why you don't seem to prefer using them. I'm glad you spoke of bristles and brands as I've mulled these over knowing I can't afford the best yet wanting to know which less expensive brushes would work, so thanks for including this. I've come across brushes you've recommended and they seem nice for synthetics but I can't pick them up and touch them online so need your experience to know if they are. Even though it's taken time to do the homework it's been an interesting journey in learning about brushes and papers and pigments through you.
@mindofwatercolor7 жыл бұрын
Glad to be of help. Quills I would describe as an advanced or experienced user's brush. Not for beginners. They hold and move around lots of water compared to a standard round and can be frustrating to use if you aren't used to that. Paper to quill ratio is really not the best way to choose a quill size, its more a matter of what you're painting and style. If you're just starting with quills, err on the side of smaller. The larger the quill the more water you're going to be moving and dealing with. Daggers I've never warmed up to because they make strokes I can easily make with other brushes.

Missed the live show. Hope you read these late comments. My issue is difficulty rinsing all the paint out of my brush when changing colours. It seems to take forever and I often contaminate my other paints. I have one Kolinski brush and it rinses well. Squirrel and synthetic seem to be especially difficult to rinse. Any suggestions on this problem other than type of brush? Also, what is "snap" in reference to brushes. Can you demonstrate?

DaVinci cosmotop spin quill or a Princeton Neptune quill? Your thoughts on these? Controllable? Springy tip?..thanks!
@mindofwatercolor7 жыл бұрын
The Spin quill definitely has more snap and stiffness. Neptune is very soft. It all depends on what your doing. Most quills are designed for very wet painting techniques and soft washes traditionally, so if you want that feel the Neptune is more like a traditional squirrel quill or mop. The Spin is more like a standard large round.
