Overwintering Abyssinian bananas is super easy! I live in Minnesota, zone 4b and have 8 plants. The following method has never failed: Before the 1st frost I cut off all of the leaves and dig them up. You don't need much of a root ball, just be sure you don't cut into the "corm." Then turn them upside down for a few days so the water drains out. I set mine in 5 gallon buckets that have holes drilled in them to allow for air flow and put them in my cool, dark crawlspace until Spring. Any cool, dry, dark space will work. I'm planning to do a radical propagation on one of them this fall to create pups for next year. These are my favorite plants and I cannot imagine my Tropical garden without them!

I'm in zone 7 in Virginia and I've always wanted a banana plant. Can you tell me some reputable places to order them from?

Jennifer Peavey, I don't have Instagram but my daughter does. Would you mind of she DM you and give you my info?
@traceybaldwin6509 Жыл бұрын
@@CindyOrangeNeely in case you haven’t found one, yet, I just got one delivered yesterday. I saw this video last week and really wanted one but didn’t want to spend much money on one as I didn’t really need another plant/pet to take care of. Anyway, I ordered one from Home Depot online, of all places. It’s a small plant with plenty of roots-about a foot tall with 3 nice leaves and a new one ready to open up. Arrived in perfect shape via FedEx. It was less than $14, shipping included! Came from a nursery in Tennessee.

LOL, I had to shake my head when you said you have an idea what the perfect garden should look like. So do I and my garden never gets there. It's always is some sort of change. I am constantly telling people who ask, including my husband, that a garden is never finished.

Yes to more Q&A. And, to add to your thoughts on botanical names…I learn as I go too & I (sort of) force myself to use that name when referring to a new plant, whether showing a friend or tagging a post…it helps it stick in my brain. Now, whether I’m pronouncing it correctly is another story!

I loved the changing locations! Btw, I want to say thank you for not doing cooking videos. I’m also not a cook, and I couldn’t find cooking less interesting. I’m here for the gardening (and the dogs). 😄

Yes, more Q&A, please. You provide a unique mix of knowledge and humor that is welcome. LMAO: “I don’t can, I am always afraid I am going to kill someone with my canning.” That sums it up for me. Thanks for the dry delivery, it cracks me up constantly!

When are you guys doing another wine and weeds? You don't even have to do weeds - just do wine and talk about what's great in your gardens, or what's bugging you in the garden, (no pun intended 🙂). Loved this Q&A buy the way!

Great video, and great thumbnail! I find that botanical names get easier, like anything, the more you hear/read/use them. I listen to a lot of gardening podcasts etc. and it has really helped. (PS, Facebook groups are scary 😳) John Lord’s KZbin channel is hilarious and so informative, as he often gives little plant insights about botanical names during the course of a video. Agree on the arborist wood chips. That plus cardboard turned dusty lawn into a luscious, overflowing planting bed. YES to more Q&As!

Yes, yes to wanting more of the Q&A videos. Your garden is an inspiration and I know what you mean about being impatient. I am going to have to try that banana next year. I would've naysayed your starting things like nasturtiums and zinnias early rather than direct sowing as I have always had much better success with direct. Buuuut, this year changed my mind as I had such pest pressure eating my direct sown seedlings that I will definitely make sure to start some inside early along with direct sowing. Though my pest pressure was so bad that I planted out some 4 inch tall echinacea seedlings and something killed them within days. It has been a crazy year. My Bobos have been so disappointing for the past 4 years that I will have to move them to a different spot. I think they are just not liking their location, seeing how gorgeous yours are doing gives me hope.
