I appreciate you stating the value vs COR argument. I have several customers that I have told that their car has. Do Not Resuscitate order. It makes sense to keep it going with cheap patches but save the repair money for a new car as that one has a long list of developing serious problems that will put it way past its value to keep. Note: a car with classic car value is different.

I know I have exceeded the value of the vehicle in repairs over the years, but ever time I look at it all I can see is everything that is still right with it. I just cant bring myself to junk the poor old girl. You're right that I shouldn't keep fixing it, but... well I love it and I want to keep it going as long as possible. You are a good man for advising your customers to not waste money, but some of us are too stubborn to let our old cars die :)

I had a 78 Mustang II with a 2.8 v6, and a 4 spd manual. It was a dark green notch back. I had fun with it. The 79 Mustang was the start of the new body style, which I thought was very ugly. Anytime something broke I just went down to the junk yard and pulled a replacement part. It was very easy to work on.

My wife is partial to German cars. We have owned a Porsche Boxster; BMW 535i and now she owns a 2014 BMW 640i convertible M class (which we love). My question is: What is better moving forward? Mercedes sedans; Audi/Porsche/VW; or BMW?. I intend to keep the 640i (I think it will be a collector vehicle some day with excellent maintenance). But I will need to buy her a daily driver soon.

@@iamalwayswrite my dad had a first generation Evoque. Great car. Sadly his health failed hard shortly after buying it so he could no longer drive it himself. But I every other week or so (couldn't more often as I lived quite a distance away or I'd have done it every week) would take him out for a spin in it around the area he lived and he loved doing that. Responsive, reliable, comfortable. Expensive of course, but for my dad, he knew it'd be his last car ever and he considered it worth the money. Sold it on after dad died because I couldn't afford the road taxes and insurance on it, never needed more than the normal maintenance set in the book for it in the 5 years he owned it.

Mitch Jackson I will say buy any real wheel drive Volvo with the 2.3 four cylinder produced between 1988-1995. I have a 92 740 with almost 470K miles on all original drivetrain. Never left anyone stranded or need a tow. I drive it daily and on vacation. Still looks great inside and out. My pick for Toyota would be the 1998 RAV4. I owned one that my ex wife drove. It was totaled in an accident at 150K miles still running strong. The weak point on them is the oil pump seal. The seal itself is under 20 dollars but the labor will make you give up your weekend to do it or about a grand in a shop.

The latest Mustang looks like a Fusion coupe because it's platform is based very loosely on the FWD Fusion. The rear suspension is largely the AWD rear suspension of the Fusion/MKZ, just beefed up. They then designed the rest of the car's chassis around this rear end.

An old story goes like this: the Germans started using metric hardware on motor vehicles in WWII because they could work on our standard stuff or their metric with their metric tool kits, but we couldn’t work on theirs because certain jumps in fractions were too big in common tool sets. Of course sizes like 19/32 or 21/64 were come up with to solve the issue.

Regarding the wheel nuts. I have had a similar problem with mine on the XJS, it eventually transpired that the nuts had previously been fitted using an air tool and over tightened as a result. This has distorted the stainless steel caps to the extent that I’ve to replace all of them. So, the moral of this tale is don't allow tyre fitters to use air tools on the wheel nuts otherwise you could find yourself well up the creek on a wet, windy night!

Hey Wizard love the videos. I am in the UK and the first "mordernish" diesel I bought in around 2014 ish was a 2002 Focus 1.8 TDCI (Best car I have ever owned by the way and still regret not spending the £800 or so to fix it after 3 years of ownership) and was told horror stories about EGR valves and so the first thing I done was bought a blanking plate for it off ebay for about £4 and it still passed the emissions test here in the UK. A couple of years later I then bought a 2004 Mondeo with a 2L TDCI motor and didn't bother blanking it and when it reached around 110K miles the bloody thing would cut out when it got up to temp and had to wait till it cooled down to be able to start it. I wish I had just blanked it off when I got it. I completely understand in the need for emissions legislation and also that it will be different in the UK and US but adding complexity to cars such as EGR''s ect is just designing a car to go wrong and cost potentially a lot of money. There is so much tech being forced into new cars these days which is sending the cost of cars up and stopping us from being able to fix them without going to a garage. I can honestly say that even if I could afford to buy a new car I don't think I would buy one now. I now own a 195K Mile 2001 Skoda Octavia 1.9TDi non PD engine (not sure if you got the Skoda in the US but its essentially a MK4 VW Golf with a different body on it) and its awesome. None of this nonsense with unnecessary electronics in it, just a basic car that gets me around 58MPG and works when I turn the key (after a few seconds of cranking as I keep blowing the glow plug in Cylinder 4 for some reason) but it has never let me down appart from the clutch plate failing and changing the timing belt just in case. keep up the good work. It's worth just replacing the factory lug nuts. The jackets on mine got pretty damaged and I had problems getting a couple of them back on once so I decided that was enough and replaced the lug nuts with something that wasn't jacketed.

I’ve loved the new mustang since the 2015-16. I even like the new ones. And my best friend that’s a die hard gm fanboy even likes them.

Brian Schell I’ve never owned a ford but owned a lot of GM, yes the new mustang is gorgeous, how can they top it though? I’m afraid the next face lift will be horrendous.

the problem though is again with Ford's idiot engineers, the manual transmission in the GT version and weak aluminum shift forks. One day you'll be driving along and go to put it in 3rd, whoopsie, no 3rd or 4th gear. If it's under warranty they'll replace the transmission with, you guessed it, another transmission with aluminum forks. AND you'll have to wait 4 months for it because they are so backlogged.

Muskoka Mike just depends on the car and how hard you shift it generally. There’s guys that run them without a problem. The excellent 10-speed is a good alternative to avoid the possibility though

@@bschell1969 That's true about how hard you "shift" but remember, the GT was supposed to be a track ready vehicle and able to withstand the rigors of track use. I mean "track" mode isn't just a button on your dashboard lol. I know the marketing dept thinks that's all it is but labelling a vehicle suitable for track use IS NOT just a marketing gimmick lol. If you're going to make a track car, every part of the car has to be able to withstand track use. Ford isn't the only one, Dodge and the exploding diffs in the Hellcat are another example. Sure they built an engine with what 900 hp? made it do 9 seconds in the 1/4 mile but forgot to make a diff that can withstand the forces exerted on it lol. The prob with Ford tho is they found out about the issue with the forks in like the first 3 months and never bothered to make the changes at that point. To solve the problem all they'd have to do is start making them out of billet aluminum instead of cast. Hell, I bet if they just cast them out of higher grade aluminum they'd be fine. Did they? Naw, they just keep on making them out of weaker material and "hope" that they can keep up.

Mr. Wizard! Appreciate your opinion and your experience which you provide in the videos. I searched your videos on the channel, but didn't find any regarding "power steering". My car may have an issue with electric power steering making noise some in cold weather(mornings/evenings mostly). This happens in parking lot/when maneuvering in the gas station at low speeds when turning the steering wheel any direction. Since it is electric power steering there is no fluid to speak of and everything is clean in the car, no ripped boots, no free play in the steering wheel. Any ideas?

I agree, however, sometimes you also need to factor in the cost of a replacement vehicle if you aren't going to fix the "old" car. I am currently driving a 09 Crown Victoria with 155K + miles on it. It needs a new heater core. The part is $40 but the labor to install the part is $1100. My dilemma: do I put $1100 into a car that is worth under $2000? Do I take my chances on a $2000-$3000 vehicle that may not be in better condition? Luckily I am in a position where I can (probably) buy a brand new car, but I like not having a payment. I will say this about the C.V. I have had decent luck with it up until this heater core issue. I have kept on top of any/all maintenance so that I have never been stranded. When the heater core blew I was almost close enough to a garage that a tow truck MIGHT NOT have been necessary, but it was a good idea.

I used to own a 76 LTD Wagon with the 400 V8. Had to replace the EGR and Smog Pump for emissions. Failed miserably with the new parts installed, got back in line, blocked off the EGR and cut the belt to the pump while they were setting it up on the dyno, in front of the Technician. With both disabled, passed with flying colors. Got a permanent Equipment Waiver for that vehicle for my efforts, wound up putting 250000 miles on it before the drivers' front frame torque box welds failed

Hi Car Wizard. For your Q&As: I have an opportunity to purchase a 2002 Dodge Durango with 84,000 miles. It has some issues that can be fixed, but the thing that has me pausing is the oil pressure on the 4.7l engine is reading too high on the gauge cluster. I know that low oil pressure can cause damage, but what about high oil pressure? Could this be a blockage, or just a bad sending unit? Thanks!

One piece of advice on the cost of repairs vs the value of the vehicle. Another Ford mechanic said this to me: 1) What is the cost to replace the vehicle with something newer? (in regards to F150). A new(er) F150 is going to cost 4 to 5 times what the vehicle and repairs is worth. So while the vehicle might only be worth $5000 and the repairs will cost $5000, if a new one is $40,000....... 2) buy a newer but used one. It too is going to cost you more than $10,000 and then, do you have any idea that it will run for 3 years and not cost you $5000 to repair? Do you know if the previous owner maintained it properly? At least with your vehicle you KNOW what you've done to it, what you've had replaced. How it has been maintained.
