PhD: Primarily research. If you don't want to enter academics or be a researcher, or even a science-practioner, don't do it. Simple as that.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I am an incoming GSE Ed.M. student and was feeling a little nervous about attending such a prestigious university. Your video was so helpful and comforting, and I absolutely can't wait to start classes!! :)

Aww thank you so much Rachel!! Your comment means so much! Wishing you the best of luck with your app process! Hahah tbh I can't remember the exact moment I wanted to be a teacher because for as long as I could remember, it was my dream job :D As a kid, "School" was my favorite game to play with my younger cousins hahaha and I was always the teacher LOL : ) As I continued working with students, I found so much joy in connecting with them, and supporting and helping them towards whatever goals they had. Now that I have chosen to teach history (still very new to it as I was not a history major!), it's been really exciting to learn more about the subject and ways that I can make it more engaging and clear for students while building their skill and confidence as well! Hope that helps a bit... I'm still having a hard time trying to articulate my "why" for teaching (which I should definitely work on as job hunting season is coming hehe) >_

Hi Katrina! I recently got accepted to the TEP program class of 2021. Do you have any advice for me regarding balancing such a hectic workload? Do you have any recommendations in terms of housing? I'm very concerned about financial aid :/
@katrinastacie
@katrinastacie 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Maria! Congrats!!! How exciting ☺️ In regards to the workload, I found it really helpful to group together with the other TEP people in my classes. In some classes, we would start a reading group to divide the text/notes, in other classes we would just keep each other updated with deadlines and info. As for the reading, I personally started out in the summer trying to take handwritten notes as I read, but learned quickly that I didn’t have the time for that hahaha so in fall, I transitioned to typed notes and I also didn’t always take notes. Sometimes I would skim the reading. Professors are typically pretty understanding, so I would also recommend advocating for yourself, especially if you need an extension for something! (I did it for the first time-twice!-at HGSE ☺️) When you go to course previews in fall, you can get a pretty good idea of what the course workload will look like via the syllabus, so you can use that to help you plan as well! As for the financial aid concern, I feel you 😭 Many of my friends in the cohort have picked up part time jobs this year. There are many options for work study and student jobs on campus; Massachusetts’ minimum wage is $13.50 an hour and many jobs have flexible hours to accommodate our busy schedules. Hope this helped!! Congrats again!

hi katrina! I got into harvard TEP for this upcoming year. I was curious about how you felt transferring your credential from MA to CA? did you feel like the program has prepared you well to be a teacher? thanks!
@katrinastacie
@katrinastacie 4 жыл бұрын
hi nancy :)) big congrats!!!! I was under the assumption that it was an automatic transfer, but I just found out that you don't actually apply for reciprocity until you get a job in the state you're planning to teach in (I think... or until after graduation). So once I graduate and get my Massachusetts license/endorsement (hopefully in June), I'll be able to start the process of applying for the California one. There are 2 staff members who focus on licensure, so they are here to walk you through it... I would just be proactive about it (unlike me who made an appointment with them very recently hehehe). Luckily, I passed all the California exams already, so it'll just be paperwork. I have definitely learned a lot and feel much more comfortable/less anxious about teaching than I did last June, but I will very likely still walk into my first year classroom feeling really nervous and unprepared hahaha (not because of the program) I do think there are improvements that can be made with the TEP program, but overall, 100% happy with my decision and will walk away having learned so so much (and our cohort is super bomb hehe) Please let me know if you have any other questions as you're deciding! Congrats again!

@@katrinastacie thanks so much! i've been talking to licensure folks already because I feel like I might move back to the bay after :o don't know yet though, and I haven't taken the MTEL yet whoops. can I ask what improvements you wish you could make the program? do you find your time manageable too?

Katrina ! what subjects did you test when you applied for college? how many subjects SAT and AP? i have lots of difficulties listening to you because I'm not native English speaker. so I ask you here. Sorry and thanks a lot!
@katrinastacie
@katrinastacie 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Minnie! No worries, thank you for asking/telling me! When I was in high school, I didn't think much/prepare that well for college haha... I took 2 subject tests (US History and Bio) but honestly did not do good very in either (I think I got a 680 in history and 600 in bio). For some reason, I didn't want to study for the SAT and my score was very mediocre (scored 1730 on the old scale :D...). I took a total of 5 AP classes and passed 4 of the exams with a 4-5 and did very poorly on my AP Bio exam :-) I don't usually share my scores as they are not very good... but hope this helps! haha I think colleges have definitely gotten much more competitive since I was applying to undergrad (in 2012). I think it would be a lot harder for someone with my scores to get into UC Irvine now :/

@@katrinastacie katrina! Thanks for your elaborate comment. I'm moved😭 I have someting to tell you a lot. But sadly, my english skill is very low. I've studied English for myself several years. But i ve never talk to someone in English. Only on KZbin like you. And you said that you didn't that much study a lot when you were in college. But I think most of your teacher recognized that you are smart and nice. I feel like that. And Isn't AP subjects difficult than SAT? I am so surprised that you took 5 AP classes. I am taking only 1 ap class😭 If i only take one ap class, Is it difficilt to get into prestigeous colleges? And How much is eassy important to get into college?
