Thanks so much for the video. Just before putting my boat away for the winter, the motor ( an 1989. 70HP Evinrude) stayed in the raised position and would do nothing as far as tilting goes, no sound, nothing. I found the disconnect plug, reseated it, now it's fine. I applied some liquid to make better contact and reseated the plug a few times, and it seems ok. Thanks again.

You may have solved a problem I've had in hooking up an add-on T&T unit on my '85 J70. Only thing I could suggest for us DUMMIES is to show the ends of the wires as you hook them up so we can see if they match what we have. Thanks for a helpful vid.

So on mine I have a lever underneath the motor that if I move it up & down I can see the gauge go up and down but it doesn’t move when I’m actually using the button any thoughts would help.

My boat works everything but didn't come with a trim gauge for some reason. I'm used to checking it and stuff. I know I can turn and look at the engine but I was wondering if I could add the gauge. Maybe from the controller to the gauge?

The blue cables are connected to the trim stop to shut off the trim motor and stop the engine being tilted too high

Awesome video you made me understand huw everything sinks together thank you. I have a 1999 Evinrude 70 on my 2000 crestliner 1700. My trim works on the switch in the front and back at the motor, my problem is my trim gage is stuck in up position could be because it sat for long time in the barn. I want to get that gage working again but I can't locate the darn sending unit with lever on. Any advice ?

hi can you please help me,, I have an old 1993 Johnson 140 hp V4 engine, that is giving me some grief ,, can you give me some pointer's on what to have a look for as to why my tachometer gauge only work's when the engine it upright, but the moment you start to trim up or down, the gauge drops off and you lose the rpm reading?,, I am thinking its a brake in the harness loom some were?,, as the rpm gauge dose work,, were on the engine dose the rev gauge hook up to?,, and what color would the wire's be so that I can try and track them back up the loom to find the broken wire, and hopefully fix it and get my rev counter working at all stages of engine trim!,, this rpm gauge is driving me nut's trying to get it working now,, so how long can I keep taking the head ache tablets before they do me in?,, thanks for any help you can give me, Mike

Also, wire diagram shows wires go back to ignition switch in addition to the three wire on controller for switch? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Trim relay box is on the back of the engine, between the heads. You'll see the 2 stubs sticking out where the box will screw on. 3 wire trim switch can be seen here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mna9fJmwjLCKgas

@@BrandonsGarage Thanks again. I figured out the placement and no need for a sender unit without a guage. Still confused my switch has three wires, blue, green and red blue dashes. Trim motor has blue and green. I presume the red w blue dash is the ignition switch wire back to the relay box? Great channel, thanks for the tips.

Hi Brandon i replaced my 3-wire to a 2-wire trim tilt motor. I bought the conversion harness but am clueless on what to do with the two smaller wires (green/white and blue/white). I wish i could send you a picture to show what I’m talking about.

the small green and blue wires goto the trim switch Its a 3 prong switch. red batter + in the middle, then im pretty sure blue goes on the bottom terminal, green on top.

Hello Brandon, I have a 1989 90 HP Evinrude. I have 3 wires coming from the tilt sender (white, black and green). I followed them up into the motor and the white and black go into the power block but the green wire is just sitting there not attached to anything. If it helps it's got a ring terminal on the end of it. Where should it be attached to on the motor?

Nope! Unless youre talking about stuff from the mid 70's, then yes; with some different brackets. If you're talking about 1980s and newer, gosh no.

My trim gauge is stuck on full trim. When I put the sender to ground for a fraction of a second the trim gauge goes to the bottom. Not sure what's going on.

Brandon, I have a 2000 Johnson and I have been trying to figure out why my tilt will only go down and not up. I tested both switches at throttle and engine, both work down but the up button I don't hear the motor. I changed the relays and no luck. I cant figure out where the limit switch is located and was hoping you could help pinpoint where I could find a diagram indicating the location. Now that's assuming that the limit switch is the issue. Any suggestions? before I bring to boat repair shop... Thanks, George

Its on the tilt tube. Not all engines have a limit switch by the way. Does the motor run when you up? or does nothing happen?

I added fluid and bought new relays. Nothing. Trim motor makes noise while going down but its completely dead when i press up on switch. Thnx in advance .

The few models that do have a limit switch, they are located on the tilt tube. This style of trim has no limit switch.

you seem to be Guessing about ALL of what you're doing with this engine, you really need to know all about the engine your working on like the Year of it and the Model, Codes on the tag located on the left mounting bracket

What is confusing the hell out of me is I have a motor with three wires. One ground and two hots. Connecting either one will run the motor in opposite directions. I haven't found a relay set that will work with this motor. Everything I have bought on eBay or Amazon doesn't work. I connect the green and blue to the painted connections shown on the relay yet the motor barely turns and the wires get hot. When I connect the motor directly to the battery it runs fine.

your motor is working properly, the problem is your relay setup; it is supplying an additional ground signal, when it shouldnt be for a 3 wire motor. Your ebay/amazon harness can work: in the middle of each relay you should have a large ground wire, thqt needs to be removed from both relay sockets (cut, or terminal removed) and itll work fine l. there are 2 ground wires going to each relay, it needs the smaller one, usually on the left of the larger. Middle needs to go, left/right stays.

@@BrandonsGarage this is actually a single large relay. It has four terminals and three control wires. I tried a pair of relays from mMercruiser and they didn't work either. I was thinking of trying a pair of starter relays. What confused me about the Mercruiser relays is they are wired like a regular relay. It makes no sense that they would be back feeding when I'm hooking all the grounds up. The positive circuits should be separate from the grounds.

Not quite- Originally that engine had a 3-wire trim motor. Which used a whole different relay/electrical box. If you have a newer 2-wire trim motor on it, you can install an external controller and use it just fine. If you still have a 3 wire setup, you can get a 3 wire relay controller on ebay too.
