You know the saying about “a smart person can understand complex things, but A GENIUS can EXPLAIN those complex things in a way that’s understandable” This is the perfect example of that! Nathan Florence could definitely be the BEST surf coach in the world someday or maybe even more like a “Surf Professor”!

The explanation of the mental shift is literally EXACTLY how I've been feeling getting over my fear of waves. Here in aus we have a lot of big swell generally and it's messy and steep on a good day, I've picked up surfing again after taking a break through my teens and I'm still handling my fear now but now I'm really good at getting beat down at least XD

Spooky wipeouts....bodyboarding Waimea shorebreak in '83 when it was 8 to 10....and this little backwash kicked my feet up and had me dropping head first, sideways to the beach onto almost dry sand. Thought I was dead. Got away with a sore shoulder and a sanded face,

I had a bit of a revelation watching this vid. You are someone who I consider the best of the best, can crush it at double oh pipe and send it at thicc af chopes. But you share the exact same fears, anxieties, and wipeout experiences as someone like me, a brutally average kook who's happy to make a drop on a head high slopey shoulder. I mean, not that the wipeout experiences are the same per se, but more that I'm not doing things wrong. Like what I go through is what every surfer goes through, even up to the pros. And I noticed realizing that notion sort of put me at ease. Why do I have all this anxiety about the big swell tomorrow, or paddling back in after I get worked hard, or worried I won't be able to make the drop in front of the entire lineup? Like, dude -- I'm realizing I'm telling myself -- chillax, this happens to the pros too, maybe on a much, much, (much) bigger scale, but the same exact thing happens to you, Nathan freakin beast at chopes Florence, too

It's funny, normally I would hate a video like this; a long video where the person just rambles. But...I couldn't stop watching. It was like sitting down with you and just having a great conversation where we all got to ask questions and you shared tips and war stories. So enjoyable. Thank you for doing this and for sharing all this great info. I truly enjoyed it.
@mitch60mccoy4 жыл бұрын
Nathan, I hope you see this additional comment because I have several thoughts about what might bump your RAW videos to the next level. Remember, as the person creating the video, there are many things you know that we (the viewers) don't know. For example, I really enjoy it when you slowly turn your board around so we can see the environment and who's out in the water with you. The issue is, I don't know who these folks are. So it would be great if you added a simple pointer label showing the name of each person. Your viewers would then feel like they're more a part of the community and be so much more engaged and in the know. Second, while the GoPro is a great onboard surf cam, the audio infamously cuts in and out. So it would be great if subtitles could be added to the video so we (the viewers) could understand the actual dialogue. Again, the audience would be so much more engaged since they could understand the dialogue and really know what's being said in these moments of craziness. This is similar to the NFL Films when you get to hear the players inside the huddle or on the sideline chatting and so forth. Very cool. I know this would add more work and time to get these videos released, but it might be worth a try as it could provide a significant impact to viewer engagementand and boost your subscribers numbers. It might be worth a trial. Maybe one or two videos. Perhaps you could get a grom to do it for you in exchange for advice or something? Anyway, keep up the great content. I'm a sixty year old inconsistent (and now longboard surfer) with a bad back. I grew up in Santa Cruz and now I get to experience surfing vicariously through work like yours. Be safe. Be strong. And thanks for the great content!

Hey you being healthy and drug free makes such a huge impact on your level of skill and ability. The best highs in the world are free and for any and everyone. There is something about boardsports thatfeels so fucking good
@peacefulsurfer4 жыл бұрын
It's weird, but that's the biggest part about surfing larger swells, taking the fall. I don't know if it's just a personality thing but it was the same for me, first big swell was 35+ and that first paddle in and fall released all that tension that had built up. Balls still in your chest paddling in but that level of fear isn't nearly as bad. I don't even know if it's really just fear after that point, it's more a mix of fear, adrenaline, apprehension, anticipation, and a damn healthy respect.

Thanks for all you do the 3 of you, Ivan is really cool also. I am convinced some big players bought up the pulp paper knowing there will be a need for masks and the suppliers are unable to fill their normal orders. Futures market players purchased the wood for paper ahead of time IMAO..

Can you do a vid on surf etiquette in big waves in regards to sharing waves and bailing your board. That looks super dangerous to me. Thanks Nate

Start slow. Don't focus on the bottom, focus on your surfing. Big thing when you wipe out try landing as flat as possible but not too flat you need to penetrate the water. I try an land feet first letting my feet penetrate the water and lye back. If I eat it on the take off I always tuck my head between my arms. Safety first ! My home break is here in Hawaii and is really shallow reef at any size. Practice, practice
