Watch The Full Talk Here : • New Economics For A Ne...
The story of India’s economy under the Nehruvian socialist framework has been a stunted one. Afflicted with License Raj, political patronage and crony favoritism, the Indian economy functioned largely as a political economy that bred an ecosystem of corruption and economic stagnation for nearly four decades after Independence. Even as the country slowly disentangled itself from the outdated crony socialist system by way of liberalization and economic reforms in the 90s, it reeled under massive surges in inflation and an out-of-control fiscal deficit despite a healthy growth-rate in the decade before 2014.
It is only now, under the visionary leadership of Narendra Modi, that the story of India’s economy is showing signs of a tectonic shift. As India surges ahead on the developmental fast track, the willingness to take risks, the proclivity for out-of-the-box solutions and the ‘can-do’ approach of the Modi government is making the world sit up and take notice.
Noted economist, author and environmentalist, Sanjeev Sanyal spells out his idea of leveraging the Indian economy into one based on social churn, reforms, innovation, risk-taking and most importantly, a framework grounded in the application and imposition of rules.
He elaborates on how fundamental changes like reforming the complex and indirect tax system, regulating inflation control thereby bringing down the Cost of Capital and strengthening manufacturing, reining in the fiscal deficit as well as boosting infrastructural expansion, are practicable only by introducing structural frameworks of governance that will not only maximize governance but pave the way for long-term economic development.
About The Speaker : Sanjeev Sanyal is an Indian economist, writer, environmentalist, and urban theorist. Currently, he is the Principal Economic Adviser in the Ministry of Finance, Government of India. A Rhodes Scholar and Eisenhower Fellow, he was named "Young Global Leader 2010" by the World Economic Forum at Davos.

@@shikharverma7833 Yes, I know. That is because We have not taken control of our history. History of India is told through the lens of foreigners, rather than Indians themselves. India's' regional history is vast and far more interesting than European History or any other history in the World. Our Indian scholars / historians need to break up the mould imposed on them by European colonial mindset and write our own history the way it really is.

Ayushman Bharat should be given to the next layers at a price. 5 crore bpl families free, next 10 crore at 5000/- per year. Surplus could be used for improving existing govt hospitals and creating new ones. Preferably in smaller or periferal area where the cost of acquiring land is low. Connect with world class transport. Attach all of them with low cost hotels for patient families. Medical tourism.

How we can become trade surplus when we import 80% oil needs?? The more we grow the more energy we will need ? Not sure why govt can't replace all public buses with Electric Bus and cut ticket price by 25-50% so people start using it more & more, use hydrogen for heavy truck for goods transport, use 20% ethanol in oil.

Is this judicial system (a colonial hangover) even appropriate for Bharat? Luminaries like Gurumurthy ji have argued many times that our Judicial/ legal system is actually extremely hostile and antithetical to our society, our culture and our way of life. Cases like Sabarimala and Ram Mandir abound. Is adding more judges really the solution? It does not need a PhD to understand that the Judiciary is the _most_ corrupt and inefficient body in the country. The collegium etc are just symptoms of a much deeper rot. So, rather than these incremental changes, do we need a serious rethink of the entire system itself?

SS tactfully deflected the last question and it is only fair that he refused to address it as he is part of the government. Only solution for the rising "population differential" between the two major religions in India, which ultimately could destabilize the nation due to potential "clash of civilization", is to refuse welfare benefits/subsidies to families with more than two children. Reform NGO sector, charity organizations that offer freebies etc., to strictly adhere to this gov policy. Communities that refuse to play by the rules have to feel the pain. Moreover, create awareness among women on the benefit of raising a small family where children have better future in terms of education, health and economic opportunities; drive home the point about lost opportunities when there are more people to feed with fewer resources. Gather intelligence & inflict damaging penalties (high level of deterrence) on religious leaders who encourage their followers to increase the head count with a sole intention of changing the demographic dynamics like they have done in many other countries resulting in complete annihilation of native cultures. Someone has to send a clear message: in the name of secularism, no one will be allowed to destroy this highly inclusive, plural dharmic civilization. Nature needs diversity of practices, ideas, paths to evolve; evolution requires that creative impulse that emerges when there is beautiful chaos born out of diversity. Homogenizing forces that try to impose one set of dogmatic tenets based on ONE book will ruin human evolution. It will only lead to dictatorship and loss of all liberties. Indian leadership has to quickly recognize this and act decisively.

History is important for a person to develop his identity and sense of belonging to a society and for others outside the society to adopt it. However, history can be found out by merely examining a house, coinage, weapons and places of burial. Statues I believe don't teach much about the culture of the people but merely about the few higher up in the society.

since governments want citizen to be dependent on state. the worst impacted is Farmers and agriculture. Indian civilisation got agriculture very early so we need to preserve it in people. not with Monsanto, Du Pont and Govt Universities controlling seeds and fertilisers. Presently our top soil is turned into sand by Fertilisers and pesticides. i wont give up agriculture/animals husbandry, will return to it after retirement.

Do you know that India is a food surplus nation? That means that we produce more food every year than we consume. So the problem that was present during the 60s and 70s of India not producing enough food to feed it's people is no longer the case. So if producing food crops is not going to make any more money for people, then it is natural to upgrade their skills and move them into different job sectors.

I don't think you realize that most of the people that are in agriculture today were forced into it in the British era when their original professions/talents/skills were stemmed. E.g., handloom weavers, artisans, shipbuilders, etc. Look at any survey of rural populations, and a majority say that they would leave agriculture if better (or really any) opportunity presented itself. Most people don't give two shits about the "lifestyle and dignity of [labour]" in agriculture. The people who remain after that transition should be the people who should be made more productive (for which there is a scope of 13x improvement by conservative estimates) so that they can feed the entire country and so that it would be a win-win for everyone.

Everyone can ask questions because we only talk and find fault. We always feel everyone is robbing the country but we know not what we need to do. We elect a government but don’t allow it function. We want progress but will not allow roads to be built through our land. We want the government to provide water to all but will not allow the government to distribute the available water equitably leave alone intelligently. Are we a nation who want to progress at others cost? We are a nation that want others to do for me but I would do nothing for the others. No country develops with this mindset. We know things are going wrong all around but would do nothing to prevent it.

That is because we all lack a sense of nationalism. I think this is because inherently everyone feels insecure about their position. People don't have any trust in the governments to allow it to say take the land at a subsidy or bother enough to fix the problems. This is why we should work towards making everyone feel inclusive and part of the country. We should have good government bodies working for people instead of taking bribes. When common man feels comfortable we will see a great shift in thinking.

In spite of his extraordinary credentials, I agree with some observations and suggestions but I do not agree that we need to spend enormous amounts to create icons to project greatness of any country or societies. Money has to be spent on economic growth of all segments of population and not for the city dwellers alone. Statue of liberty was a gift from France and US did not built it to project her greatness. When non urban development is lagging so far behind and farmers end lives, there is no system of incubators for development of entrepreneurs, money is to be spent on building monuments makes no economical sense.

Sanjeev, your comments in this video at least need to be more thoughtful and less superficial. This is not at all expected from an intellectual who has put some rigour in analysis and that comes through when reading your books. When you justify a Shivaji statue and ignore the fact that so many of his forts, monuments and buildings associated with him are literally crumbling to dust out of apathy; your justification sounds hollow. Arguments have to be well-rounded
