You should definitely talk about salary with your direct coworkers who are doing a similar job. That way you can figure out if you're being underpaid or if someone is being screwed out of pay. Talking about you salary only really hurts the company.

@Kamisha Childs And what's your point exactly? Those are more going to come into play when receiving an initial offer. After working at a company you may find out you are more qualified for the position than a coworker and that you're being paid less. Knowing what others are making is beneficial to you in getting more money.
@bustkateers4
@bustkateers4 Жыл бұрын
@Kamisha Childs It is still good to know what your co-workers are making compared to what you make. For example: I started working security for a company before COVID began. We were all started off at the same wage. We had $10 a hour. When COVID hit we were still expected to show up and do the same job we had been doing for the same wage. The company wanted to hire on more security to stand at the entrances to take employee temperatures before they could enter the building. All these new guards did was sit or stand with their box of masks and temperature guns and took temperatures and gave out masks. They were being paid $13 for a much simpler task. And to top it off if one of them called out, one of us would be called in to replace them without a pay increase for at least those hours working their job. But what got them in trouble with this was the fact that we were contract based and doing their job was not part of our contract so they had to apply us under the temperature guard contracts when covering their shifts. Meaning we were entitled to the $13 for those hours we did their jobs. Point being, if I hadn’t had the discussion with the temperature guards about their wages, the guards covering their shifts would never have gotten the pay they were entitled to make being under the appropriate contract. Needless to say everyone started getting paid what they should have been paid.

I really appreciate what you said about having a teachable spirit and how each of your past jobs contributed to landing your current position. You really just never know where God's plan will take you! I also agree with you - it's very important to know yourself, your strengths, your needs, and on top of it all, remember *who* you are and what values you represent. That's a sign of personal and spiritual maturity that employers and others will notice right away and respect you for! Love your videos!!!

I've been waiting tables for a couple years and I was a tutor and researcher at my college. I'm trying to get into an office space but I always get scared that if I haven't been an admin assistant for like 5 years then no one will hire me. A tip: If you are switching fields, but have experience IN the field that you are applying to be an administrative assistant for, then you will sometimes be qualified just by knowing the processes, and what would be expected. I just switched from doing respite care for children/adults with special needs, and ABA therapy to working as a office coordinator for a home healthcare company. My background experience working with private families, understanding being an entrepreneur and also managing other staff helped me get this position.

Thanks for this! I have two sides 1. Artsy and organic then 2. Loves numbers and excelles in math/accounting (my accounting professor asked if I wanted to switch majors for it lol). I relate to you with the need for stability and the crutch of perfectionism. I am currently a retail supervisor and was previously a receptionist for a small business (I also had the opportunity to learn and do duties related to administration there) and one day I decided to peruse Admin Assistant work to come out of retail and do my artsy stuff on the side 😉 im struggling with branding myself I guess or figuring out how to put all of my experience and skills in words when it doesn’t directly relate to the position. I also have a bachelors for retail merchandising and marketing. Basically the degree was business admin with a retail focus. Anyway, sorry for the long comment. I just really appreciate this 🙏🏾 😊

I relate to this video SO MUCH! I worked in an office as a billing specialist from the age 20-24 (Accounts receivable, accounts payable, generating invoices/work orders, phones, email, mail, etc). But then I found the passion to make resin art for video game controllers! I am also a big nerd haha. BUT, the income is not stable and it stresses me out. I NEED that stability in my life. So I've found myself looking back to that "office lady" life. Just applied for an administrative assistant job that's 7 minutes up the road from me, and I got an interview this Monday! They got back to me instantly and I have so much confidence going into this interview. I hope to join wonderful workers like you in the office. Also to any others reading this that are looking to work in a billing office environment, YOU CAN DO IT! Start small at a call center if you need to. Find a small family own business and get your foot in the door! There are so many jobs like this out there for all types of businesses. It's mostly a cozy job and you will find pleasure in your daily life. Have a wonderful day and thank you for listening to me ramble lol!

Great video. Love it. Thank you for sharing and being so open! However I will disagree about not sharing salary. That is the only way sometimes you’ll find out you are being underpaid. Here in CA we have transparent CA website which list all salaries for state and government jobs. I always check it when I’m looking for a new job. It’s important to know salary ranges so you can negotiate your job offer before you accept or decline the job offer. I worked as a career advisor for advanced degree scholars for 3 years at a university and helped people negotiate jobs between 50k to 150k. Especially as a woman or a person of color, black person I always recommend people to learn about salaries and always negotiate a job offer BEFORE you accept the job 😀 I’ve negotiate job offers and usually get what I’m asking for ❤️❤️❤️

I am so happy to find your page. I graduated with a BS.Sc in communications with minors in business and psychology and I knew I wanted to be an AA in healthcare, but was never given the change. After working from Starbucks, to Rooms To Go, to one hospital, then with Nissan I was finally given the opportunity to be a AA for a very big and popular hospital. I'll be working in the corporate side and i start at the end of the month. I am so excited and nervous all at the same time. This has been my career goals since I graduated! I definitely enjoyed this video!! 7/29/22 updated: Definitely had to update. Great information I work in Recruitment and I was very impressed with the information you shared. I also suggest that someone with limited experience but great computer and originations skills consider working for a good temp agency to gain experience and it could led to a perm job. Also try to get into a medical device , biotech or pharmaceutical company they usually pay Admins $50k-$80k or more depending on the level of the mgt team. I also love how you got your AS degree I always tell people to start there. Wishing you much success!!!

You've given me hope that when I make the switch to that degree plan, I'll be able to find a good job. I stayed at home with my kids for 5 years and I felt like the temp agencies are more open to hiring people that are willing to learn. Keep in mind... as an admin your task changes all the time and there is lots to learn constantly but, you get to make great connection that may open doors for you.

Great video! Thank you for sharing your experience & thoughts to help us. You're personality shines! I'm 47 & have a vast work experience including Administrative Assistant III. I'm interviewing this week for an educational administrative assistant at my local community college (as a state government employee). I'm ex military, have experience in customer service, retail sales, an Associates in Applied Science in Human Social Services, I'm an AAPC CPC medical coding graduate, worked for social services, health department, hospital, disability, case worker in these areas including food stamps, Medicaid & WIC. I've gained office administrative experience through these positions as well. I've worked mainly in federal, state & county government. Indeed is the absolute best search engine for jobs. Keep in mind researching a company or agency is great to & looking at their available job openings. I'm planning on obtaining my Administrative Assistant PACE certification soon through the ASAP (American Society of Administrative Professionals). I agree 100%....do not share your salary. Some companies make you sign an affidavit regarding this. I've gone into positions making several thousand dollars more than the starting salary based on my experience, education & past salary history. Many agencies now have a formula to determine salary. Other factors go into salary as well including performance evaluation, volunteer time, obtaining additional training & certifications, etc. So no....not everyone should be making the same for the same position. I'm also an active AAPC, ASAP (American Society of Administrative Professionals- this one is free with many free resources, webinars, etc) & IAAP CAP(International Association of Administrative Professionals- currently a 6 month free membership then it's $150.00 annually) member. Exam is super expensive for the CAP. I personally like the ASAP organization much better! This looks great on your resume, you have access to many training, continuing education resources & webinars. Also certificate programs & fast track 6 week courses are available at many community colleges. I reside in Virginia & we have an excellent community college system! At my local community college you can take short fast track courses that last anywhere from 6-12 weeks at low cost $100 or so. There's also short certificate administrative office courses at my local community college which is probably the largest community college in Virginia. So don't think you need to start with a bachelor's degree. Do you what you can now that's going to allow you to accomplish short term goals, that will add more to your resume quickly & get you a decent job. Many employers will even pay for you to obtain your ASAP PACE certification. The cost is currently $375, you have up to 12 months to complete, it includes everything such as courses, materials, study guides & includes 3 exam attempts, that's pretty darn good! You have to earn 24 hours of continuous education credits every 2 years which ASAP offers many free webinars to achieve this. Also if you can become employed at a college even a community college your education is paid for upfront at most colleges. Some do tuition reimbursement but most pay from the beginning. Also free courses & training on edx.org!

I’m someone who didn’t have experience in this field, so, I definitely understand how searching for one of these jobs can feel very frustrating & discouraging at times, but it’s definitely possible! I’ve been binging all your Day in the Life videos to pump myself up for my new job! Thanks so much!

Thank you for this video. I loved your tips and nrg! I am in the Caribbean and I have an interview coming up in this field (which I have worked before) and I am looking forward to it and I was really motivated by what you said. I have been out of the field for a year but am ready to jump back though I was keeping busy by doing HR courses. Wish me luck! and new subscriber 🙏🏽😊

Hi! I loved your video - very thorough and informative. :) I was studying and working towards the arts for a while (BA in Theatre Arts). I'm back in school, continuing an Office Technologies certificate program, so I'm aiming to redirect my path. I enjoy some stability, too. haha I'm interested in hearing about the marketing classes you've taken. Anyway- subscribed! :)

The vurray beginning is the one I completely agree with. I keep seeing people mention how it's important for employees to tell each other about their salaries so that they'll know if they're being underpaid of not, but why? Everybody's situation is not the same. Everybody doesn't negotiate the same terms and conditions when they get hired nor do they have the same education and experience, so what is the purpose of comparing?

I highly recommend sharing your salary if you are comfortable. Not discussing your salary only benefits your employer and not the employee. I have a Master’s degree in Health Care Administration and I am fully comfortable with sharing my salary.
