Nowadays there are a lot of native speakers teaching English on the Internet, which is very good for us non-native speakers. Some of those teachers are really great ones, but no-one compares to Coach Shane when it comes to teaching English. There can be no denying that Shane was born to teach English. His unique style makes a great difference among all the English teachers. I've never seen anyone like Shane. Thanks a lot for everything you've done for all of us, dear Shane. God bless you! Keep doing your best as you've always done! You are unbeatable! Claudio (from Brazil).

Its funny that the "long e" sounds like a latin i, while the "short i" sounds more like a latin e.
@coachshanesesl4 жыл бұрын
Yes, and a HUGE problem for so many people is distinguishing the SHORT I and the SHORT E~
@pincmin4 жыл бұрын
as a Spanish-speaker, I wouldn't try to translate the sounds, because they also have words like BIATCH, where the i sounds like a latin i for us.

This is a good adult explanation as to why it's called "long" versus "short" vowels. Of course, when you're a 6-year-old kid, they can't possibly teach it to you this way.

To understand short and long, instead of talking about "angles" we should talk about tongue position. Long means tongue is more projected, short means tongue is more retracted.
@coachshanesesl7 жыл бұрын
Yes, but if you tell that to students who hardly speak English, they will have NO idea what you are talking about!! After 30 years of teaching, I have found that this method works best.

Ok, I got it. Very helpful, thank you! But why, when you say 'been' (not here, but elsewhere), does it sounds so 'ben' to me? I know it should not sound like 'bean', but the point is that I heard some Americans pronounce it as 'bin' and others (like you) say 'ben' (as to say 'batch' instead of 'bitch'). Thank you, anyway, even if you cannot answer! You're the best on the tube!
@coachshanesesl4 жыл бұрын
Yes. I teach my students that BEEN has THREE common pronunciations in the US--"ben, bin and b'n (with a schwa)". We use all three a LOT! I should make a video on it, shouldn't I?!
@federicoalessandroruffinat27984 жыл бұрын

And I was like "oomg, what did I say? you know.. sea.. water... sand.." But the reality is that now even with your video I can't hear the difference, I feel so bad cuz I'm still saying bitch for beach, and shit for sheet :( :( :(
