Q&A Slices: How do you grease the piston on the Stipula Tocco Ferro?

How do I grease the piston on the Stipula Tocco Ferro? I was hoping it would be similar to other piston fillers, or maybe require some finesse like the Lamy 2000, but it’s tapered body has me stumped and reluctant to start unscrewing things that may not unscrew! Thanks!

You can unscrew the nib unit/housing (watch out for o-ring)
toothpick/grease the wall of the ink reservoir
I tried taking it apart, not to the point where I’d break it tho

I've tried removing the nib unit, but it won't budge and I'm using Goulet Grips too. I've got some kind of white substance circling the piston head, I thought it might be mold but now I'm pretty sure it's just silicone grease. It's been there since the day I got the pen.

Brian thanks for this, had actually used technique on a Pelikan M20x. Watched it again just to sure I had gotten the technique correct.

Couldn’t you also use TWSBI silicone grease and an ink syringe. The silicone grease provided with TWSBI pens is more liquid than that available from Goulet and should be easily drawn into an ink syringe. A few small drops on the inner surface of the ink reservoir should do the trick, I would think. I haven’t tried this myself, but it seems like a sound idea for pain in the ass pens such as this.

I'd love to be able to use this technique on the Stipula Etruria - Purple Ebonite I bought from Goulet last year. This piston mechanism is very difficult to operate and I believe it would benefit greatly from some silicon grease in the barrell. I've tried several times to unscrew the nib without success. I'm afraid to apply any more pressure than I have, because I feel sure something in the titanium nib assembly would break. I also had a terrible time cleaning the Colorverse Dark Matter from the pen when it finally was exhausted. Cleaning would also be much easier if I were able to flush the pen by removing the nib. I've tried to search online to find out whether the ebonite versions of the Etruria have unscrewable (??) nibs, but I've not been able to find any information on this. Please help.

Take the nib out and grease through the hole. Umm, normal peeps been doing our Pelikans that way for decades?

I am curious about a product. Have you considered carrying Blackstone Ink, particularly the CMYK set? From what I have seen, it is a great set for ink mixing.

Hello Brian :) I am relatively new to the fountain pen universe (although I have been watching your videos for two years!) anyway I am wondering if you have a guide on your website of all the ink swatches by all brands (boxes of color that are next to each other) so color choice is easier, regardless of the brand ... I am not sure if this makes sense. would you also consider making a new updated video of your favorite daily inks ? many thanks for all the wonderful work you and your team are doing, as if I haven't stumbled on your fountain pen mistakes, I would not have this hobby!

Hello Brian, I'm new to the FP world and have this pen, which I love. However when I went to use it today it wouldn't start. Please HELP! I swished the nib in some warm water, but it continues to skip horribly! Haven't dropped it, it's been safe in my pen case with almost daily use and there's plenty of ink in it. Any recommendations??

You're using the Tocco Ferro, with which ink? It's possible the tine are misaligned or there could be debris in the ink channel. Might be worth giving it a thorough cleaning first and see if this happens with any other ink. - Colin

Thanks Colin, I'm using Noodler's Baystate Blue, the only ink it's ever had. I will give it a thorough cleaning, although I haven't had it that long, just a month or so, ordered it from you guys 😍

Baystate Blue is notoriously finicky, especially the longer it sits in a pen. I think a good cleaning will help, but definitely maintain a regular cleaning schedule with that ink. Or maybe get a few samples of more well-behaved inks (Pilot Iroshizuku or Monteverde come to mind) - Colin

Colin, don't break my heart, I LOVE baystate blue. Are the inks you recommended just as deep and vibrant?

Baystate is a great color, just can be a headache too! Definitely check out our Swab Shop tool to compare these inks (www.gouletpens.com/pages/swab-shop-by-color-blue ), but some good alternatives could be: Diamine Blue Velvet, Monteverde Horizon Blue, Colorverse Quasar, even Noodler's Blue or Liberty's Elysium. - Colin
