I went to a cricket dinner where William Hague was there to introduce Ian Botham. Botham was useless but William Hague was hilarious. One of his quips was that John Major loved going our for a late night Curry. I'm sorry to anyone who doesn't get the joke.

They should do, for they have been proven broadly correct. The Remainers, on the others hand, were cowed by authority figures and believed the fairy stories served up by Osborne. There's a reason remainers only discuss Brexit among themselves - the moment they meet the real world their arguments collapse, much as did their votes.

Funny politicians: Peter Mandelson gets my vote, he has a wry wit. Boris Johnson was an obvious omission in this list, although much funnier on TV than in parliament (where I think he tended to embarrass himself). Starmer isn’t a natural comedian but he definitely has one or 2 decent joke-writers in his team, he might have potential for runner-up status if he eases into the delivery.

You guys are smoking something. I'm in the US, New York specifically (thirty plus years) and fail to find anything vaguely amusing about Trump. The man is singularly humorless - never even laughs as is fitting of someone so devoid of emotion. I have no idea what John is talking about. The UK and Europe as a whole needs to evolve into a future with the US as an active adversary.

Is Emily quite all right? The idea that Brexit has 'fundamentally' changed the country is hyperbole. Maybe to people like here it is but for ordinary people it's made almost no difference at all.
@RichWoods2311 сағат бұрын
Are you quite all right? The drop in trade and investment since Brexit has led to an ongoing fall in GDP of £32bn per year since 2019, by the government's own assessment; the banks alone shifted £800bn out of the country because of the services agreement impact. The pandemic supply chain impact has masked some of the import/export problems, like the additional regulations cost (some of which still hasn't come into effect), but it's still contributing to inflation and the tax take such that there is less available for spending on the already-underfunded health, education and social care sectors. Why do you think that Starmer and Reeves are finding it so difficult to satisfy everyone over the budget? They've got so little money they've got no room to manoeuvre and a hundred problems to fix.

Brexit has been disastrous and most people are poorer because of it.
@Lawrence4000-s3k10 сағат бұрын
@@RichWoods23 Do you really believe numbers like that? These are counter-factuals, fabricated (that's the correct word) by people who made all sorts of claims before the referendum that have been shown to be completely false. After 2008 I have no idea why we give these people any credence at all. Among their other idiocies in the referendum were claims about mass unemployment, house prices crashes and impending poverty and yet none of it happened. This should have been 'Turnip Tuesday' had those jokers been correct. Btw, exports to the EU have increased in real terms since 2016. Brexit has had a minimal effect on the UK economy. Indeed, on a per capita basis our GDP has increased at about the same rate as the major European countries. £800 billion moved out of the country 😆. If that were real I think we would have noticed! (since £22 billion was described by Labour as a 'black hole', necessitating the freezing of pensioners . It was never more than numbers on a spreadsheet and it made zero difference to the well-being of people in this country. Btw, about that £32 billion a year. A couple of problems. 1. We have a labour shortage so that would have required even higher immigration, so per capita incomes would not have moved (but house prices, waiting lists and traffic volumes certainly would have done). 2. The government takes around 40% of GDP in tax. 40% of £32 billion would have been £12.8 billion. We paid, in 2024 terms £15 billion in net contributions. We would have lost money (and that's assuming we would have paid zero in providing public services to all the extra workers we would have needed).
@Lawrence4000-s3k10 сағат бұрын
@@veganbarnsley15 Simply not true. This sort of nonsense really needs to stop. Per capita incomes have mirrored those in the EU and exports to the EU have increased in real terms since 2016. moreover, wages in the UK have risen faster than in the EU. Maybe you have become poorer but you need to stop thinking you represent the majority of the population (you don't and that's why you could never win the votes)

Democracy is ‘the popular vote’. Populism is about emotionally exploiting voters by offering over-simple solutions to complex problems.
@chriselliott72619 сағат бұрын
You don't understand the meaning of populism in this context. ..........Used synonymously with demagogy, to describe politicians who present overly simplistic answers to complex questions in a highly emotional manner, or with political opportunism, to characterise politicians who exploit problems and seek to please voters without rational consideration as to the best course of action.
