As a lad I attended (not real often) Newtown Boys High School & the police boys club was a stone's throw from our school. I used to jig school & go down & watch Fenech & Harding train under the absolute gentleman & master trainer Johnny Lewis & his great friend Graham "Chicka" Moore who would get us lads to come off the street & get inside & do some training. It was like a dream to watch our idols train up for their big fights. Fenech, unfortunately, did something one day to my Aboriginal mate & me that crushed any love/respect we had for the man but we all loved the Hitman, especially after he returned a world champion. Jeff struggled with alcohol for many years & was barred from most pubs around Glebe, Newtown, Redfern and I believe, due to him not getting the due respect & recognition he more than deserved as a fighter, drank himself into destitution & sometimes didn't even recognise us any more. Heartbreaking, as he fought one of, if not the greatest come from behind victories ever against Andries & should have received all the usual accolades, which he didn't. He was a miserable sight & a broken man for many years. So when I ran into him a few years back near my place in Newtown, I was bought to tears of joy when I noticed how healthy he looked then told me he was off the piss & Johnny & him had just returned from the states after being inducted into the Boxing Hall of fame. I was deadset wrapt for the man. As he was leaving on a pushbike he told me, with a smile & great pride, he was off to see his son. I was just so happy for my childhood hero having just witnessed his greatest comeback ever. Love you Hitman & Johnny.

Fenech couldn't help himself. That part of him permeated every part of his life and really tainted his boxing legacy. I love his phonebooth style, but in that phonebooth his greatest punch is jumping his shoulder into the jaw. So very dirty.
