12:12 Dress vs. Sports style: Mike, I don't get your distinction between the "old" [read: meh; dull, stodgy] and "new/re-emerging" dress watch, in the following ways: 1. TECHNOLOGY: no, I don't mean the quartz/solar/digital rabbit hole. I do mean advances in horology instrumtation. Maybe my distinction is a matter of where on the spectrum we point our beams, but I'd bet my donuts to your guilders that the instruments today's master horologists' tools radically differ from their predecessors'. I'm talking LAZERS vr ANVELS in the craft phase. I'm thinking laser cuts vs grinds in cases. Even gears can be crafted to minute specifications. Why gallouche, when all us middle-class Joe's and Garrit, every Florence or Floris, can get lume beyond patrician Jonkers' imagination. 2. As you've rightly said in other vids, any- & everybody has a phone with time accuracy beyond prior generations' capacity. 3. 12:54 "Youthful take on classic..." youth??? You can't mean "youthful"!!!... Today's youth wear black teeshirts embossed by skelital shapes, pierce ther tongues, and wear bottoms that either expose their, er, bottom...or have slacks so skin-tight as to put strippers of yesteryear to blushing... ergo... 4. [Broken-record Dpt:] why only blacks & whites, when can be offered the literal 50 shades of Grey, 500 shades of pinkaquamarinepurplehaze??? ... not to mention imaginary watermelon colored dials, replete with seeds. Apologies to droning ononon.

Here is the scoop on servicing. If you’ve purchased your watch within the last 15 years you do Not need to service at any set intervals especially if the watch is not worn everyday and is part of a larger rotation. Newer watches use synthetic oils that do not gunk up, degrade, or evaporate like older mineral oils. Periodically check them on a timegrapher and if the amplitude is between 230-315, small beat error, not running too fast or too slow then there is absolutely No reason to submit the watch to an intervention that may ultimately introduce issues that were not originally there.

Wow, a reference to Chris Reeve Knives. I have a custom macassar Sebenza 31 on order for about 2 or 3 years now, expecting it in maybe another 2 or 3 years. Recently received my Green Beret 7" serrated which I ordered at the same time. I had a ladder damascus bog oak Mnandi, but I can't find it anywhere. I have something I would love to hear your thoughts on. People complain about scalpers and how hard it is to get a Rolex but that’s the only reason people like them so much. There are hundreds of other brands that are comparable to Rolex but people only want them because they’re hard to get, not that they actually like the design THAT much more than any other brand. If Rolex flooded the market and made them as easily available as other luxury brands the people who REALLY wanted them would lose that feeling in my opinion.
@MrPleers3 ай бұрын
Marketing and name mostly. Even people who don't care about watches know what a Rolex is. If a manager who just recieved his first bonus wants to show he is doing well, what watch will he buy ? A Rolex. In a lot of cases, the name is more important than the watch itself.
@Doggo-frencton3 ай бұрын
Of course. Even this dude bought a $40K rose gold Rolex annual calendar lol what a waste of money there are watches that are orders of magnitude more fine than that piece but they don’t have the crown at 12 o clock!
@dannysimenauer57453 ай бұрын
Yes & no. Many people forget that before the Pandemic most Rolex watches were available as a walk-in, except the Daytona. Rolex is building a new factory, scheduled to open in 2029, to double manufacturing to 2 million units per year. The fact is today that any model Rolex is available, just not at the Authorized Dealer. Which despite their excuses about supply & demand, adds to the frustration of buying a Rolex at the store level. One day the pendulum will swing back to purchasing at retail.
@lamentate073 ай бұрын
@@Doggo-frencton It's obvious he runs in money circles based on the observations he makes about watches and brand perception, as well as the clothes he wears. In his world, owning a Rolex probably matters. In my world, it doesn't at all. That's okay, I enjoy his videos for the information and opinions he shares, but he is in a different social class to many, if not most, of his viewers, so when he talks about luxury tiers, I always keep context in mind, and at least he knows what he is talking about and has an interesting watch collection (based on what he has chosen to reveal). We all have different situations, social lives, jobs etc. A love of watches unites us ultimately! 😁

My sincerest congratulations on reaching 55k, this is beyond well-deserved. Now that that’s out of the way, here comes the heresy. When discussing the future of the watch industry twenty minutes in, it sounded to me more like a representation of the watch industry from the past. A mid-60s vintage 4-digit Rolex 5512 has all of the attributes mentioned and delivered them at an affordable price to boot. I sincerely hope that you’re right and that the we are indeed headed back in this direction. I look forward to a time when watches are again just hitting their stride after a sixtieth birthday. Congrats on the 50k subs; I enjoy your content and analysis. I whole heartedly agree with your assessment of the Yachtmaster in Everose of the Oysterflex. About a year and a half ago during a televised yacht race, I saw that Yachtmaster in the Rolex commercial, and thought, "I'd love to get one of those", since i had a planned trip to Switzerland the next year. Well my watch collection at that time was close to 20 years old, and I hadn't been following the pandemic and post pandemic Rolex hype, (thank God), but needless to say, that Yachtmaster remains a, "I'd love to have one of those" acquisitions. Congrats on yours.

I have helped other watch enthusiasts build a watch collection. My suggestions are to have a high end watch that meets your life style. For me that’s a Tudor BB and a Rolex Explorer II. Consider a vintage watch, for me it’s all about Seikos, I have some 70s Seiko Lord Marvel, Lord Matic, King Seiko, and Grand Seiko. I love pairing these with interesting watch bands and these vintage pieces allow me to play with various watch bands. Finally have something that you can wear everyday that is accurate, has a GMT function maybe and that holds a good condition for a long time. For me that’s a Traska Venturer II as it will look the same as the day you bought it 2, 3 or 5 years due the road. I’ve had to adjust mine as it ran a bit fast but it’s sub €1k and something I can work on myself.

Regarding watch winders, an AD said the exact same thing to me . Not necessary as long as you wear the watch every now and again. He also added, "I mean, just look at my store - there are watches for sale here that have not moved in months...." refreshingly honest dude :-)

Lol - I like his way of putting it 😂

Watch winders: I’m a watch technician (self taught, but still, I’ve been servicing watches for years) It’s not needed, it won’t damage your watch, but I think that if it’s something you would like to have to ensure X amount of watches in your collection are ready to wear. Get one. But they really aren’t needed in most cases and really aren’t going to make a huge difference. I haven’t tried most out, but a winder that just kicks on for a specified period of time per day would be optimal.

Yours is a good take on a polarizing subject. I am tired of those who slap back with the "You wouldn't leave your car running when you're not using it, would you?" response, demonstrating their lack of understanding of both the mechanical watch and the internal combustion engine. That argument is tired and weak. I agree with you; if the owner wants to use a winder, go for it. Just buy a good one. And Mike, congratulations on the 50K milestone.

No wonder you got to 50K, your channel is awesome (if it weren't for your fixation with Tee-udor and CW 🤣)! It is one of the very few sources of genuine discussion on watches and I find myself watching your videos more and more, no matter if I agree or not with you. Here's to a 100K!

Thanks. I'm not that fixated on the two brands - I'm just mindful that I'm speaking to a big audience and when using examples and references it's best to mention something that a lot of people can relate to. People know Tudor, Omega, CW (to some extent) and Rolex. Me referencing some obscure microbrand might help the microbrand but it doesn't conjur a relatable picture in the audiences head. That's why they get mentioned 😊😊
