Dr Rhonda what do you know about "maltodextrin"(Assume for control that I HAD a perfectly diverse biome prior to maltodextrin consumption - diet of raw foods/fibers and/or wild salmon, spinach, sprout shakes, kimche, oats/bananas occasionally, lots of almond milk)

So would it be safe to just have a teaspoon of broccoli sprouts in a blender every other day then? Is that a small enough amount that it's likely safe?

Hi Dr Rhonda Patrick, I just want to point out that isothiocyanates can interfere with the thyroid’s absorption of iodine and high and chronic doses can lead to hypothyroidism. It is important to supplement with iodine salt. I have hypothyroidism secondary to high and chronic doses plus lack of iodine salt

40:39 He says broccoli sprouts may do as much harm as good against cancer but if it it helps prevents cancer it follows that it will help reduce the chances of the cancer spreading. So even though I'm just a diesel mechanic I think its worthwhile. Btw I'm a bit over 2 years into this cancer adventure. Saw the stats on chemo which show that chemo doesnt improve the 5 year survival rate by even a day with this problem (colon cancer with liver metastases). So instead of doing chemo I went with the alternatives. Now I'm about 80 pounds lighter and actually feel better than I did before I found out I had cancer. Allergies? GONE! The serious arthritis in my knees? GONE! Heart palpitations? GONE! Severe snoring? GONE! Acid reflux? GONE! And I get around and move like I did 20 years ago. Before I knew I had cancer I was asking for trouble. All that pizza and soda was killing me. If it weren't cancer it would have been a heart attack, stroke, diabetes or who knows what. One thing cancer can do is scare a guy into saying no to pizza and icecream.

wishing you all the best!!...I just got diagnosed with the same- colon cancer with metastasis to the liver...removed a section of the colon, will start chemo soon, and hopefully another surgery to remove lesions from the liver...I have also started taking broccoli sprouts, and hope that, even though Jed says it may not be a good idea, I am still going to take it....it has to be a good thing to fight this killer inside us right?

That’s great about the health turnaround. Had similar situation with a couple cancers and using nutritional approach that brought impressive extra health benefits. Using a friend’s juicer for veggies and my own bullet blender helped a lot for sure. Stats are tricky aren’t they? I was fortunate to connect with someone whose specialty was stat research. Stats showed a slight increased five year survival (maybe one to two percent) from cancer with a certain chemo but when looking at details the death from other causes increased. Other causes including probable side effects from harmful treatments. A key for my choice in avoiding that chemo was that survival years later in case of recurrence, which happened, was much better for people who had NOT done that particular chemo. In any case, quality of life was and is a consideration too. Having a nutritional focus seems beneficial whatever one chooses to do. I loved the vegetable juicer, adding digestive enzymes, and other goodies for my particular health situation. Sounds like you’ve done and are doing very well with the situation. That’s wonderful.

It’s great to see an academic that is that humble and clarifies his position in a paper without taking all the credit. Especially when he’s working with a student and it would be very easy to assume credit. Upmost respect for both of you.

I’m glad more of this content is coming out. I’m an Hospital based Internist and the larger arc of health has always been of interest. My father is a nutritional biochemist and food microbiologist and had worked in the food industry for 30+ years so our conversations on physiologic and particularly gut health continue to this day. Keep up the good work

I’m lucky, my 7 year old granddaughter says broccoli seed sprouts taste like happiness ♥️ she’s always had an adventurous palate though. Loves her veggies and is even a fan of kimchi!

I have type two diabetes and had hard time with blood sugar being in high 200s. Now my glucose after taking Moringa powder Kuli Kuli is in 80s to 120. I maybe super sensitive to it but it really works for me!!!! Love broccoli sprouts too!!! Just want to add I started to take Moringa after listening to this video. And want to thank you for the information.

I use my own dried moringa leaves taken from my own trees to make smoothies. I use one small Fuji apple, one medium sized banana, two tablespoons of peanut butter, and one cup of dried or fresh moringa leaves.

I take a daily brocoli sprout suppliment by Source Naturals that is supposed to create 2,000 mcg of Sulforaphane, and back that up with real brocoli sprouts in my daily smoothy, and also eat brocoli almost every day. I am trying to suppress any prostate cancer that I may have in me. I am also on clean Keto with low protein, I'm a very healthy 70 year old man.

One of the best Q&A podcasts, gripping stuff. It’s quite exceptional to see screenshots of peer-reviewed papers backing up the arguments, well into the discussion, some in machine-gun mode when discussing some less-than-substantiated claims. I feel that public health agencies and journalists generally do a poor job of summarising the state of scientific research when they provide nutritional advice. In-depth discussions bring out the nuance, and this interview/discussion set a very high standard. Government agencies and journalists involved in public health: take note of how complex topics can be presented to Joe and Jane public.

I’ve been struggling with inflammation for over 5 years and off work for 2... some arthritic conditions creeping in (waiting for consult) and c5-c6 radiculopathy radiating down both arms and severe daily miagraine like headaches . I just switched to anti inflammatory diet and found your videos... started sprouting yesterday (lost 11 lbs in 2 weeks on anti inflammatory diet). My dr has changed all my meds (tapering off migraine meds and adding anti inflammatory) Severity if headaches has decreased, mental clarity is starting to return... Thanks to you both for giving the best and most up to date information on sulphoraphane. I have been sprouting them at home for about 8 years after finding Jed’s research a few years after having triple negative breast cancer. I’m not always consistent but eat them on average 8-10 times per month. I did commit to 10 servings of vegetables per day since my illness and that is easy to do for me as well as eating only pastured meats and wild fish. Rhonda has also made me love the sauna!

I wonder, does growing broccoli seeds throught microgreens method (using soil) makes the sprouts more likely to higher yields of glucoraphanin? Because when we use soil the sprouts actually have a bunch more nutrients available so they can build plant tissue right? I mean, I have no way to say this is a true statement, just following logic in a way here like a child playing with geometric forms holding the triangle piece and wondering if it fits in the triangle hole. hahahah Can't forget: Thank you so much Rhonda for this amazing content also thanks Mr. Fahey for researching, much love for you and your work.

I have been taking a heaping teaspoon of moringa daily for 4.5 years, now and it has helped me so much, with energy, inflammation, and reduction of BP meds, and elimination of Bystolic ( a heart rate med). How much do you need to take to maintain a healthy cholesterol level?

SMOOTHIE: I've always put spinach in and blueberries and raspberries (along with the sprouts). Sometimes I put in some BCAAs for flavour too. But I always blend the sprouts on their own first because I heard that's what you do. Then add the rest in.

Trader Joe's sells Valencia peanur butter, far healthier than regular peanut butter, the latter grown on the ground thereby creating aflatoxins like you mention. Valencia peanuts are grown on a bush. Costco also has Valencia p'nut butter.

We live in the tropics and have issues with mold growing on our sprouts, so the information on supplements is great. I’m switching to supplements. Moringa however grows like a weed, 20’ high from seed in a year. I don’t care for the taste when dried, but love it fresh in smoothies and add it to soups, salads, stews, tacos, etc. Rhonda I’m happy to see you adding Moringa to your smoothies. I doubt if you remember, but a couple of years ago I suggested you start adding it to your smoothies as moringa is easier on the taste buds while packed with more nutrients than all the other ingredients. One question though, any comparisons of how fresh moringa compares with the powder? Mahalo

By the way thanks for the Moringa tip, I travelled many times in Uganda . And I asked a local agri gardener for fruit and veggies about Moringa Tree …. they have the trees everywhere but do not use the leaves because it is food for the poor. There was also a try out by the government during the hype ….to make agri farms for Moringa Trees , but the efforts where unsuccessful due to high export prices compared to country like India . The local Uganda people …. do not know what green gold they have in their vicinity and are not informed either! …. But they are getting increasingly influenced by the big agri industry ( and politics) to produce what the agri industry wants … not for what is healthy and cheap for them to grow.

I have not seen anyone talk about this... But when I eat broccoli sprouts everyday I have horrendous body odor... So now I only eat them on the weekend when I know I will be home.

I take moringa.for RA. I found a study that it protects against heptoxicity from methotrexate. Also Ethanol extract protects against bone erosion. My ALT dropped well into normal range

A favorite herbalist is susun weed who is cautious with sprouts because she believes the chemoprotectants (for the benefit of the sprout) are too strong and need to be managed carefully. As always an illuminative, enjoyable and very professional talk.

Glad he touched on Broccoli Rabe, there's a lot of people selling Rabe claiming they are real Broccoli sprouts, I'm sure I've been fooled before. Always check that you're buying real Broccoli seeds.

Google BROQ. Dr. Patrick always brings up the French company that has the only supplement with stabilized sulforaphane but that company just started a USA branch. As someone who has bad medical family history I am just getting the word out since I want the company to succeed!

It’s like you are Olympian’s speaking to some beginning 2k walkers. 😬✌🏼 if not I’ll strain my brain to try to interpret what this means and how I could apply it in my daily life. Very informative. Thank you. I am from India, and Moringa is extensively used...not only leaves but its fruit/vegetable as well, also called drumsticks....very good for bones. Also, since I moved to US, I add moringa leaves powder with amla and turmeric which helped in reducing/eradicating my acne....I believe it is due to high Vitamin A content in Moringa...one question is though, does it have any side effects?

interesting that some supplements you listed are marketed as vision supplements. I remember taking moringa oil capsules (malunggay in our side of the world) a few years back because I was breastfeeding and I was pleasantly surprised that my eye doctor said that my nearsightedness improved from 200 to 50

I threw my microwave out after learning about the gag order. Two scientists found that microwaving food killed the nutrients and so were gagged. Food cost and work in preparing didn't deserve to be microwaved to save time. Feed a baby microwaved milk and the survival rate is poor. I love your information and need to listen to this again!

N=1, fwiw, the lady that cuts my hair was diagnosed with cancer and told me she ate 3 pounds of broccoli a day. She still eats broccoli (but not 3lbs per day). That’s was a hella LOT of broccoli AND that was 20 years ago…she still cuts hair.

It is terribly depressing to find out that sulfuraphane does not help people who already have cancer. The group I belong to has consistently recommended broccoli sprouts to prevent metastasis so to hear that it does not do that and can actually be harmful scares me since I have been eating sprouts since I was diagnosed with tnbc.

Go back and listen to him again, as he definitely did NOT say that it doesn’t work: unlike KZbin gurus and random FB strangers, these scientists don’t speak in such black and white absolutes. All he said is that there’s currently, and as far as he’s aware, no consensus and/or enough studies to give you the absolute confirmation you’re seeking... which is rather impossible to do, especially as they start the show explaining how the dose is relative to many variables (the source of the broccoli and the seeds, the preparation methods, your individual microbiome, etc). You’re just drawing conclusions from a very generalistic answer instead of looking for the research and the data.

Sulforaphane is weird like a lot of antioxidants:in most cases its going to act like a pro oxidant ('phytotoxin!!!11!') and that's where I suspect some of its killing power is coming from. if anything it should work, though of course it may be too long for most people... -Meat based KD sprinter

Make them at home , they sell as seeds. She suggested as pills it doesnt work as well but I dont recall why. Ill attach the link if I find it. She has videos of he she makes the seeds grow and also the juices. You just wash them daily and let it grow =) We started this week and they're quite delicious!

Dr. Fahey's research is extremely relevant for our times. I also believe that there's the danger of Pharmacologizing food too much. Nature was created with everything just right for nutrition. Humanity has prospered and survived eating real food up to now. Now people are eating fake food and do not know it. I would rather tell people to eat a variety of vegetable things. just to eat real food is already a huge and preventive change. Some of these regulatory molecules work long term in the mix of food. There's no way you can get broccoli every day and call this a good variety. I also imagine that there is redundancy in these substances in nature. I don't need a study to be published in order for me to put something in my diet. If we trust that the same Person who created us prepared things for us, you rest and do good on the earth, and it will go well. That said, I understand that in some occasions the pharmacologic use of food components can serve some function in specific disease processes

I've been taking moringa supplements for several years plus since I live in South Florida I grow some moringa trees in my yard. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made moringa does make me feel good.

I really wish we had clearer info on dosage. I keep hearing 100grams a day. Would this be cut in half if you froze the broccoli sprouts since the Sulforaphane content is doubled? 100grams is such a large amount of sprouts. I might just start eating fresh (not frozen or boiled to 70 degrees) 3 times a day. 100 gram broccoli shake is really hard to stomach. If I have to do multiple shakes a day i know I wont stick with it. Also would have been nice if they had talked about how long you can safely/effectively keep the sprouts frozen, and if unfreezing them will the Sulforaphane content "run off" the sprouts.

Where can we find a ranking of cruciferous vegetables by how much glucosinolates they contain... or whatever that compound is called...? For example broccoli sprouts are at or near top. I was surprised to hear cauliflower actually contains far less than I thought. Thanks

So cancer patients should shy clear of supplementation because it may promote cancer growth? Sulforaphane both prevents and may promote cancer? Notice that you didn't comment on his warning to exercise caution regards broccoli ingestion when cancer already ongoing. Most all oncologists discourage any and all supplement and vitamin use during chemotherapy. Because it would strengthen cancer growth and render chemo chemicals ineffective. Any hope of getting clarification here, please? And his remark regarding the trial using a high enough dose sulforaphane to kill a horse? Is there is a lethal threshold here?

It’s everywhere the only way to get rid of it is for people to stop buying GMO sprayed with it. Plasma charged water has been shown to work as a herbicide and pesticide without destroying the fungal colonies that help protect the plants and allow them to communicate bio chemically naturally as well which also distributes their nutritional properties.

Dr Greger gives moringa a thumbs down :( "Diabetics were given about three-quarters of a teaspoon of moringa leaf powder every day for 12 weeks and got significant improvements in measures of inflammation as well as long-term blood sugar control. But the reason they call it a quasi-experimental study is because there was no control group. The researchers just took measurements before and after, and we know just being in a dietary study can lead some people to consciously or unconsciously eat more healthfully, so we don’t know what effect the moringa itself had. Even in moringa studies with a control group, it’s not clear if the subjects were randomly allocated. And in this study, the researchers didn’t specify how much moringa people were even given. What does one tablet’s worth mean? No significant improvement in this study; maybe they didn’t give enough? This study used a tablespoon a day, and not only saw a significant drop in fasting blood sugars, but a significant drop in LDL cholesterol as well. Two teaspoons a day didn’t seem to help, so was it just that a whole tablespoon is needed? Apparently not, since finally, a randomized placebo-controlled study using a tablespoon of moringa a day failed to show any benefit on blood sugar control in type 2 diabetics. So, we’re left with a few studies showing potential, but most failing to show benefit. Why not just give moringa a try to see for yourself? That’s a legitimate course of action in the face of conflicting data when we’re talking about safe, simple, side effect-free solutions. But is moringa safe? Probably not during pregnancy, as about 80 percent of “women folk” in some areas of the world use it to abort pregnancies, and its effectiveness for that purpose has been confirmed, at least in rats--though breastfeeding women may get about a half-cup boost in milk production based on “six randomized, placebo-controlled, blinded, clinical trials”. Just because moringa has “long been used in [folk medicine traditions]” in no way proves that the plant is safe to consume. Lots of horribly toxic stuff, like mercury and lead for instance, have been used in traditional medical systems the world over. But hey, at least “no major harmful effects of [moringa] … have been reported by the scientific community”, or more accurately, “no adverse effects were reported in any of the human studies that [had] been conducted to date.” In other words, no harmful effects had been reported, until now. “Stevens-Johnson syndrome … following [moringa leaf] consumption”: Stevens-Johnson syndrome is probably the most dreaded drug side effect, a rare but potentially fatal condition characterized by “epidermal detachment.” In other words, it can make your skin fall off. Fourteen hours after consuming moringa, a guy broke out. The same thing had happened three months earlier, the last time he had eaten moringa, causing him to suffer “extensive lesions with blister formation over [his] face, mouth, chest, abdomen, and genitalia.” “This case report suggests that consumption of Moringa leaf is better avoided by individuals who are at risk of developing [Stevens-Johnson].” Although it can happen to anyone, HIV is a risk factor. My take on moringa is that the evidence of benefit wasn’t compelling enough to justify shopping online for something special when you can get healthy vegetables in your local market like broccoli, which has yet to be implicated in any genital blistering. nutritionfacts.org/video/the-efficacy-and-side-effects-of-moringa-leaf-powder/

Dr. Patrick, in 2002-2003, Dr. Fahey saw the pail of Moringa oleifera seed I left at TAMU food protein research center at Bryan TX, and promptly called me. We had some patents with M. oleifera dealing with seed oil and derivatives back then, and the supply was extremely limited. We grew the supply over the years. I think though that the heat of the soup would also destroy the myrosinase in the mustard seed, which is why mustard seed should be put on broccoli after it is cooked.
