Jamaica's motto is, " Out Of Many One People." I live on Long Island in NY. I went to high school, college and have worked with many Jamaicans that are not Black. My former next-door neighbors are of East Indian descent. The ones that used to live across from me are of Chinese descent.

In the US, they don’t show the full scope of diversity in other countries. They paint stereotypes in the media. First time I met a Chinese female who was raised in Jamaica blew my mind when I heard her speak. Traveling to Jamaica and seeing the diverse cultures/people was really eye opening and a beautiful experience.

@@nellydavis7645 it's only crazy to certain people as they have never been exposed to it. people in Jamaica will know there is a strong history of Chinese Jamaicans dating back to the 19th century. also the media never represents special people like this. for example in China, there are so many different ethnic groups that look so different from your typical Chinese person. Some Chinese people in China look very Western with Asian features the further north and west you migrate. The further south you go you have darker skin Chinese people who start to look more South East Asian. We all so diverse that the world only have a small snippet of what Chinese people look like.

@@PopsGGIt's just such a normal part of Jamaican life that for Jamaicans its strange to hear you say your mind is blown. In fact, if you've met black Jamaicans you may have met Chinese Jamaicans. Many black Jamaicans have Chinese ancestry and often you can't tell by looking. Sometimes the name gives it away - Chung, Lowe, Chin. But sometimes the name wasn't passed down because one of the persons who passed down the Chinese ancestry included a woman at some point. There are a number of both types among my friends and family. In some it’s visible, in some it’s not.

There is another time and place that is slowly being forgotten about Jamaica. My grandfather was chinese as well and had many stores. We all pretty much moved up to the US in the mid seventies like so many other families. This, however, reminds me of my late father, who just passed at 93, and man could he eat. Thank you for sharing this.

My grandpa had a store on red hills road back in the 1960s. My dad used to be in real estate there and he is a little younger than your grandpa. I bet they all know each other. We left in 1972. This was absolutely beautiful. I'm from Antigua in the eastern Caribbean and although I'm celebrating my 59th birthday tomorrow, I relate to his upbringing. Many WestIndians start off poor but we are very entrepreneurial and tend to do well especially when we migrate to America. The wonderful thing about West Indian culture is how much of a melting pot it is.This is the first time viewing your channel and was immediately drawn to it when I saw the title. I'm a black man from Antigua and my grandfather's last sibling died a few years ago at 102. their stories are always so interesting.
