Why did Adele not scream etc.? She couldn't cope with life in any way - except, perhaps, in relation to her son. So it isn't really difficult to assume she also didn't know what to do with Frank's request. I didn't get the sense that she was afraid. I got the sense that she was like a deer in the headlights. She was moving, but wasn't really in her movements. She couldn't drive. She couldn't go out. She couldn't stand up to this stranger. She just drifted with him to her home. Someone with a solid sense of self would have been better able to cope with the death of her daughter. So when Frank tells her - this has to happen. She goes along - this has to happen. I see her as someone who was punched in the face by life and is in a kind of daze. Frank breaks through and pulls her out of it. But when she first meets him we see Adele in a daze unable to cope - to really take a stand. The only exception is with her son when she tells Frank not to use him.
