I was afraid to come out to myself the most. I knew what I was attracted to, but I desperately didn’t think that I was “one of those people” and I just wanted to fit in with the what all of my elementary school friends were. I wish that I could’ve been like you, McKenzie!

I think what you were trying to say is people always want to assume an environment or situation causes a person to be gay. There is nothing that causes a person be gay. Gay babies are simply born. Their sexuality is some that won’t be know until that person knows how to articulate that feeling. Some know as early as 5-7 years old. Some, only when their sexuality peaks at 12-15 years of age. It also causes lots of confusion in many gays because they want to feel “normal” like the people around them. Acceptance is a must at that stage and not until self acceptance will the person start to move on. Just because they are told they’re gay, they will still say no because they haven’t accepted it. It just that when a gay person start to recognize it in themselves, it’s an unexpected learning curve that reveals itself when the person becomes sexually aware of themselves. That can come at a very early age or a late age. No one knows how it happens, it just a discovery. Unfortunately, in school where kids can be very ugly on the topic, a person tries to navigate the situation in order to keep friends or have a social standing in school. Then there are the really late bloomers. They mostly marry and have kids, then suddenly one day finds themselves attracted to someone of the same sex. It’s like a lightning bolt suddenly striking you in the head. But some marry and have kids knowingly only because of family issues, family status, which is just wrong to knowingly do. They end up cheating to meet that true sexual need or pleasure. I cannot emphasize how wrong that truly is to live.

Who inspires me? Your generation. You millennials really seem to have your s**t together on a lot of social issues and I believe will be known as the generation that finally turned the tide on accepting differences. Your friends seem like very cool people; typical teenage angst, a little ‘lost’ yet, but those are just fine places to be at your ages. Looking forward to you guys taking over the world. I often think us baby boomers turned out to be the lazy ones ...
