These speakers were a real collaboration. Fink Audio Consulting did the cabinet and speaker engineering, IDA did the design and Q Acoustics contributed to both and figured out how to build them. The end result is a fantastic loudspeaker. Many brands use specialist consultants and hide it but Q Acoustics are happy to promote the design team. They have a great technical whitepaper on these speakers which gives design information & performance analysis e.g SPL v Frequency at various angles off axis. It would be great if all manufacturers were so honest. They're a flagship but at a very good price for the quality.

A great review. I'm considering pairing them with a Marantz PM10 Amp & SA10 SACD Player. Every Q Acoustics 500 review I've read or watched has been very positive. My mind is 99% set on this important element of my "system for life". I've just retired and this will be the final system I buy- honest! I want to get it right. These reviews (bar sound limitations) are so helpful. Thanks for sharing your experience expertise and advice.

I think you're on to something with these Sound Clips with Commentary reviews Ron. I think I learn way more than I would from a print review or just listening to someone talk and I enjoy watching them even if I'm not particularly interested in the speaker under review. You make it look easy, but I imagine a lot of work goes into these. To top it off I've discovered some great artists from your playlists.

Excellent point about knowing what sound you like. I went thru a lot of bright speakers before I realized I don’t like bright. That’s the fun with audio. You can tailor the system to you. Such a good point.

Ron, this review was of particular interest to me...not bc of the speakers but bc of the DAC you referenced. Ive been looking at the Holo May DAC for a while. It's pricey (on the very top end of what I would pay for a DAC), BUT all the sound reviews are excellent and the build quality seems to be superb! Expecially on the top model. It's a long wait to get one. Made in China of course. Looking forward to full review.

Even though we don’t hear exactly what you are hearing, we can use these listening sessions as a base for evaluating speakers. Keeping the method of your tests consistent makes it easier to compare different speakers even though we aren’t in the room with you. Thanks for your work and I enjoy watching these videos. My only complaint is that you are making me the thnk about purchasing speakers out of my budget (lol).

I asked you a couple of months ago to review the 500's as I thought you would like them - and I was right! I'm using them with a Cambridge Audio CXU for streaming (weak link in the chain), but most importantly I'm using a Willsenton R8 ***TUBE*** amp (KT88 tubes - 25 watts per channel in triode mode and 45 watts per channel in ultralinear mode) to power them. Love, love love the sound. Nothing exaggerated, no boom, boom boom - JUST PURE MUSIC!!! If the 500's lack anything, they could be a little more dynamic, but would this necessarily be accurate to the source - then again, it could be the DAC (and surrounding circuitry) in my CXU. It's honestly, the only quibble I might have - and that's all it is - a very tiny quibble. Then again, once I upgrade my streamer/DAC, it may be problem fixed. One thing for sure though, is that I can listen for hours to my rig without ever getting listening fatigue. Sweet top end, accurate midrange and bass that's so surprising given that Q only rates them down to 41Hz - IMHO they definitely go lower than this. For me though, the things that stand out with these speakers is the holographic sense of the performance playing in front of you. I feel I can "see" right through the music performance and place very precisely where each performer is located in the mix. Sound stage width is extremely generous and depth is almost as good. Try Anette Askvik's "Liberty", London Grammar's "Hey Now", Yazoo's "Ode To Boy (live)", or just for sh*ts and giggles, Yosi Horikawa's "Bubbles" - all from Tidal. These tracks really show off what the 500's can do. If you like bass, then Bela Fleck's "Flight Of The Cosmic Hippo", Bassotronics' "Bass I Love You"/"Bass is a Throbulator" or Boz Scaggs' "Thanks To You".

Hi Rachel, nice to hear you drive the C500 with the Willsenton!! I have the R8 (kt88) and in a week I’ll have my pair of C500!! My actual speaker is a pair of KEF R7, but even if they sound good overall, I find them to be a little bit fake on the top end, a little bit metallic (maybe due to the alluminium cones I suppose..). How do the concept sounds with the R8? Do they sound materially realistic?!? I had a pair of 3050 before and loved their sound signature.. I hope to find again the same feeling with the C500
@tbear2327
@tbear2327 3 жыл бұрын
@@Iuglus The sound is brilliant, but only if you throw away the standard tubes. I use two basic sets of tubes: 1) Brand new valves route - Pair of Shuguang ST black bottle 6SL7 tubes, pair of Sophia Electric ST blue bottle 6SN7 tubes, quad of Sophia Electric ST blue bottle KT88 tubes and a PSVane CV181-TII for the power supply filter stage. 2) NOS/used valves route - Pair of MELZ military spec 6SL7 (equivalent) tubes, pair of Sylvania 6SN7GTA or B tubes, quad of Mullard 6CA7 (EL34) and a NEVZ 6SN7 (equivalent) for the power supply filter stage. The other option is to replace the Mullard's with the Svetlana 6550 C-series (don't buy the B-series as there are problems with reliability) if you want less warmth of the Mullard's and a deeper, more impactful bass. The other slight variation of option 1) is to replace the Shuguang ST black bottle 6SL7 tubes with the MELZ military spec 6SL7 equivalent tubes. All variations will give a slightly different sound, but all will be detailed and sound wonderful. Also best to use triode mode as it gives the flattest response, although UL mode can be a fun sound with certain recordings. BTW, all the variations I've mentioned above absolutely "blows the doors off" the standard Willsenton tubes. Further, given that the 6SL7 has the greatest effect on the sound of the pre-amp section, it is my opinion that the military spec MELZ 6SL7 is the best 6SL7 equivalent tube. The black bottle Shuguang comes close, but the MELZ just has that little bit more clarity. IMPORTANT: Because the Willsenton R8 is a rather simply design, circuit-wise, it's imperative that all tubes are very closely matched. As for the R8/500 combination, the sound is magnificent. It's an amazing combination with great synergy. All you need to do is ditch the standard tubes and you'll be amazed at the difference. UPDATE: I'm now using a Naim ND5 XS 2 streaming DAC instead of the Cambridge Audio CXU. I use the CXU only as a disc transport now using the coaxial out. All interconnects are Van Den Hul.
@Iuglus

@@tbear2327 thanks for the long reply!! I have already replaced all the tubes, power section with the psvane kt88-T mark II, pre section psvane CV181-T mark II instead of the 6sn7 and MELZ 6n9s metal base instead of the 6sl7 (all of them factory matched). So far the sound with the Concept 500 is impressive, I think this can rival systems costing 4-5 time the price you pay for this pair of amp+speakers!! My sources are a bluesound node 2i (using internal dac) and my turntable is a Clearaudio Concept (Ortofon Quintet black S as cartridge and Lehmann black cube se II as pre phono). Next step is replacing all interconnects and power cables, but I’m also considering a second set of power section tubes just to have another sound signature. I read great things about the Gold Lion Genalek KT77 used as EL34.. do you know/recommend them? Any other suggestions for EL34 in the 200 price range?? Thanks a lot and have fun listening!!
@tbear2327
@tbear2327 3 жыл бұрын
@@Iuglus I've spent heaps of money on valves - it's become a real addiction, lol. I own the PSVane KT88's, Gold Lion KT77's, Shuguang 6CA7's, and Tung Sol EL34B's as well. I've owned the R8 for about a year now, so I've had plenty of time to experiment with different tubes. Personally, I liked the Tung Sol EL34B's, which from memory, are great value as well. Bearing in mind that this is only my opinion, I felt that the Sophia Electric KT88's were that little bit better than the PSVane KT88's. Clarity was slightly better and bass seemed to dig a little deeper, but still very balanced too - so not over-emphasized. As you probably know, the R8 can sound a bit bass heavy, but I've found that this is only if the tube compliment (both pre-amp and power amp tubes) is not quite right. For example, using Sylvania 6SL7's can boost the bass, while using the MELZ 6SL7's lightens off the bass so that all frequencies from bass through to the top end sounds nice and balanced. As far as EL34 (6CA7/KT77) go, the Gold Lion KT77's sounded at least as good as the Tung Sol EL34's, but in my view you should try both. The Shuguang 6CA7's were also very good with a surprising amount of bass slam (NOT bass dominance) - which is unusual for an EL34-type tube. I have other EL34 (6CA7/KT77) tubes, but the battle of which tube actually wins is really up to what sound you like. With the R8 you literally can get clarity clarity clarity (KT88/6550) right through to very warm sounding (EL34/6CA7/KT77 - specifically EL34's), so the R8 is very scalable in this way. Personally, I'd spend a little more time listening to the 500's before changing tubes. Certainly buy the other tubes, but I wouldn't be swapping tubes until you are totally familiar with the R8/500 combination. This is up to you, of course. The fact is that the R8 is an excellent integrated amplifier. When you factor in the price, it IS more than just a bargain - providing you throw the stock tubes in the bin. So too are the 500's. Ok, the 500's are reasonably expensive speakers, but what they are capable of is way up there with speakers costing much much more.
@Iuglus
@Iuglus 3 жыл бұрын
@@tbear2327 wow, thanks!! You really have a lot of experience with this amp and tube swapping!! I'll definitely give the Tung Sol a try after I get a little bit more experienced with the KT88!! Last question.. are you using the 8ohm or the 4ohm output with the C500?? With my last pair of speaker (KEF R7) the 4 ohm sounded clearly better (even if they were rated as 8 ohm speakers), but with the 500s I'm having hard times deciding.. which one is better in your experience? Many thanks again!!! EDIT: After many tries at different volumes and many genres, 8ohm got the win!! Let me know if you’re using the same

I really enjoy these videos because it gives a flavor of what to expect especially when combined with the review content. Then the next step would be to go listen for yourself for an in person demo then you know what to "look" for. It's like being prep'd for a test drive of a car and knowing what to focus on before going. If you go just test drive a car with 0 knowledge there is so much to take in that the nuances get lost. But when you know what to look for you can absorb the key information after a 30 min test. Not apples to apples but it's how I think about these.

Ive read one review in the UK press and heard from KH Fink who was behind these speakers and the best desription ive heard to justify how these speakers sound is "6 drivers floating in free space". I think thats very apt but they are more than that even. For sure the unexplainable bass and disappearing act they perform are standout features. Extremely easy to listen to, easy to accommodate if heavy though! Beautifully built and finished but understated in time honoured British tradition. At £3600 new in the UK they are outstanding value matching/beating speakers double the cost in key areas

Hello from Bruce in Canada Enjoy all your reviews. Saw your review of the HOLO Dacs and wanted to seek your opinion on the Spring 3 DAC. Some reviews state that if your system is under a certain value (speakers/amp/transport) then you maybe wasting the funds and should consider spending the money on upgrading speakers or amp. Recently retired and this maybe the last update to my gear. Have purchased within my budget new speakers (Q Acoustics Concept 40 & new amp MOON 240i internal dac). Using my old ARCAM DV27 cd/dvd player and must admit the sound is very good. Do you think spending approx $3000.00 CDN is worth it or should I upgrade the amp/speakers? Any reply or comment would be appreciated.

I assume you are using very good mics as via headphones these certainly sound very good. I agree regarding open baffles- was tempted by the GR Otica, given my own experience with OB's. I currently use a pair of Proac 2.5's - a lovely sound with a VTL tube amp but their limitations as a 2 way with a 7 inch driver are shown when the volume is turned up. These came on my radar because of the cabinet treatment, even in UK I am unlikely to get a demo without a long drive so thanks for your content.......Great job.

I love this approach to the speaker review process, and have discovered new and interesting music. Considering the cabinet again, others have also done so, B&W, to mention one. Novel ideas are always welcomed. Consider the Orang? speakers, made of solid wood. Finely finished solid wood boxes, minimal drivers. What is it about these boxes that makes them so stratospheric in cost?
@jked7463
@jked7463 4 жыл бұрын
You are correct about fundamentals. That said, proper acoustic time alignment of drivers is often ignored or "compensated with the crossover" which is faking the physics. In the case of MTM speakers, at the crossover, the three drivers are acting like arrayed speakers. The center of a three array speaker setup needs to be delayed more than would be expected. In my pro life I know this to be true. I plan on confirming this with a MTM speaker build in the future. The good imaging means the drivers and crossovers are properly matched for freq response and phase and there are no major cabinet issues.
@jked7463
@jked7463 4 жыл бұрын
@Marten Dekker Completely agree. My most homogeneous design sofar has been a two way using a 40" planar driver with some really fast woofers (that could keep up with the planers,) crossed over @ 250 hz. At that frequency, the transition from woofer to mid/hi was seamless.
@jked7463
@jked7463 4 жыл бұрын
@Marten Dekker my background is in pro audio. Started in movie theaters. We created front speakers that were acoustically time aligned and put them in a theater next theater over from traditional dual 15" with horn, not time aligned. The difference in clarity was unmistakable. The clapping in Thomas crown affair was eye opening. The clapping from the unaligned speakers were indistinct and smeared. The clapping from the time aligned speakers were distinct and you could hear the rhythmn of the clapping.
@jked7463
@jked7463 4 жыл бұрын
@Marten Dekker the first response starting with "completely agree" comment was about simple designs. The second comment about movie theater speakers was about time alignment. There you and I disagree.
@jked7463
@jked7463 4 жыл бұрын
@Marten Dekker the two way is a bolinger graebner radia rd40. That is the commerccial version of the radia drivers that used to available on parts express. They can handle 10 watts/in for a music power of 400 watts. They claimed they could be used down to 150 hz. But i found to keep distortion down, especially at high volumes, 250 hz is better. The woofer(s) are available at newark. www.newark.com/mcm-audio-select/55-2421/8-high-excursion-woofer-120w-rms/dp/88C7835 . They are very fast and have a long throw but per t/s only get to 50 hz. So i use a sealed box and over drive the bottom octaves. I plan on using the combination in a MTM configuration with analog electronic x-over in the future.
@jked7463
@jked7463 4 жыл бұрын
@Marten Dekker i wish i could say both were the same drivers but no. But what you could hear was the clarity at the crossovers. On of the good things about clapping is that it has a sudden rise time over a wide range of frequencies. I also used to use the ubiquitous dual 15 w/ horn box all pro companies make. The LF and horn mouths are always baffle mounted which means the drivers are horribly time aligned. In the digital processing, i would split the signal into two, one for woofers the other for the horn. Each would be x-over, the woofers delayed and the signal recombined then sent to the speaker. It was a crude but effective way of time aligning the drivers in a passive box. Even with the issues of electronic on top of passive x-over, the increase in clarity was eye opening.

Love your videos, commentary, demos and reviews. Would it be possible to demo Tool - Parabola, Chevelle: Sleep Apnea and other rock songs to see how all speakers work with that kind of music? I mean mellow stuff sounds good in general even on decent sounding speakers. One can play acoustic, audiophile vocals and recordings and they'll make any speaker sound good but rock music comes very differently. I demoed Parabola on Persona B and Rubicon and KEFs. And for that song, Rubicon bested the other two, with Persona #2 and KEF R3 was #3. The drums and guitar riffs were a little extra crunchy on the Rubicon.

Ok. I downloaded the music that was used for the 500's. I also have the music that was used for the M3's, although this wasn't easy, but using Google and Tidal I did manage to find some of them. Between the two videos, there is no contest. The M3's win, BUT on playing all the music clips (both from the M3 and 500 videos) through my tube amp/500's, both lots of musical clips sound equally very good to excellent. So what are we missing here? Easy!!! The same upstream electronics together with the same clips which were used with the M3's must be played through the 500's to make it an equal contest - @New Record Day you'll find it is a much closer contest. The M3's, I'm sure will ultimately still win, but it would be a very interesting exercise. Are you able to do this Ron? I know I'm asking a lot here.

20 watts in a medium to small room, with speakers that aren't particularly low-sensitivity (e. g. 86 dB/W/m and up), is a lot of power and a lot of volume. Although, if your average power is 10 W, which is not quiet at all, your short peaks, especially in the base region, are probably nearing 40-50 W (just my guess, this I didn't measure ).

Ron, great video. I realize that I'm about two days late, so I probably won't get a response, but I have to ask, why is "neutral" not considered "musical"? From Paul at PS Audio, to Sean at Zero Fidelity, others, and now your comment that you think some people might have a problem with the way Q Acoustics are voiced, I need to know what is it, that make some people listen for a coloration/alteration to sound that we don't hear naturally(everyday environment)? Why does there seem to be a disdain for "accuracy" signal in/signal out? Is it nostalgia, chasing the high of a first HiFi system? Or is it a confession that we don't want hear what was recorded, rather how it was first reproduced when we heard it? And I realize that unless you're listening to a live acoustic or vocal concert with no P.A system or microphone, that you're always going to get some engineer's, or some equipment's influence on the sound, but I really like to get your opinion on why "neutrality" seem to be such a bad word among audiophiles.

hello, my friend. You have done an exceptional video along with the choice of music. could I trouble you and ask you the name of all the artists and songs you played. you can email me on a reply. these are very good demos. the fact that you did not try and play soft jazz vocals to hide many anomalies on the speaker speaks for itself.If possible I await the titles and artists. Have a good day. Charlie

@@crazyprayingmantis5596 actually, proper support of any audio gear can make a difference. The correct feet on a CD player with proper dampening can help reduce vibration in the machine, increasing clarity. That said, I find cd players grating in general. When I listen to digital, I use a home made music server that up samples the data. It reduces the pre-ringing which sounds like fingernails on a chalk board to me.

I noticed the phase coherence first and foremost. The lower midrange sounds a bit forward and the upper midrange a bit recessed. The bass sounds a bit underdamped but otherwise neutral. They don't have the same dynamic life as Spatial, GR Research, or Tekton. Overall it's a quite competent design that doesn't excite but also doesn't fatigue.

Interesting... B52s unified 2.0 , you said in that review that the the little book shelf filled the room with sound, and surrounded you with sound, as a good thing. Now you just said that a cheap speaker will fill the room with music! And that the speaker in the room, doesn't do that. Then implying that a good thing. Am I missing something here, your review on the Elac unified b52, you absolutely loved the speaker. And you said it filled the room 😘 I think this speaker is not the level of the b52s, unified... Really, iam using the same headphones, I know you're in the room! I think especially on vocals, the book shelf is much better. Slightly confused, obviously. And iam sure these speakers cost more than the Unified b52s. Must be me, after all your in the room, iam on headphones, and your using the same music tracks. And your not raving about imaging neutral clarity soundstage. Your talking about how the speakers aren't vibrating!? Anyway glad you like the speakers? 😘 One more thing, your not talking with the passion you did with the unified b52. Now you're Talking about sound stage. Iam writing this as your doing the review. 😘 You just cut the review, sunddly? Short on time I guess 😘 What was the cost on this speaker?
