A simple Q-Multiplier Circuit designed by Raymond Haigh. The schematic and other cool projects by this author:
www.yumpu.com/en/document/rea...
The Ferrite Rod (Amidon) is a Type 61 material 0.5"D x 7.5"L. It's wound w/ Litz Wire 180/46-44 Special Blend (Inductance ~220 uH) from: www.mikeselectronicparts.com/...
The Variable Capacitor is also from Mike's Electronic Parts at: www.mikeselectronicparts.com/...
The two sections are tied together to get ~15 to 532pF.
The LC Circuit easily covers the (BC) AM Band.
I used a 100k potentiometer in lieu of a 10k and a 2N5457 JFET in my design w/ good results.
The one-sided PCB is 5cm x 7cm.

Thanks Don for building this and sharing it with us! This excellent demonstration video and schematic is just what I been needing to find! I live in an area with only one local station and they are off the air a lot! This will be a great addition to my bench!

Glad it helped. It’s not a perfect solution, but it does improve the performance of a receiver. BTW - I added an earth ground to the circuit and it helped mitigate some of the noise coming from my lights, etc., in the shop. Have fun and enjoy. Best, Don

As always, a very useful tool. You may or may not agree but it is a shame what has happened to the AM band and how little of quality there is to listen to. Doesn't change a bit what you are doing. Thanks. Jim

Yep, I’m in a market with many AM stations, but the content is primarily Talk Radio. I enjoy my oldies using my close proximity TX. Hopefully a few folks can use the circuit to bring in some of the stations on the fringe... Thanks for watching and reaching out Jim. Best, Don

The Q-multiplier needs to be tuned to the same frequency that your AA5 receiver is tuned to; else your Q-m boosts some other frequency and your AA5 benefits little if any.

Hi Don. This is an interesting piece of equipment. I just received my Admiral back and checking for am stations and they’re terrible in my area. Is this something that you would be willing to build and ship? I’m interested in increasing my am options. Please let me know and thanks. Larry

Hi Larry - It’s great to hear you got the Admiral back from Ron and I know it brings back special memories. I don’t think the Q-Multiplier would be well suited for your radio. Send me an email to TheRadioRepairGuy at gmail.com and I’ll expand on this and we'll discuss other options. Best, Don
