I first heard this on DJ Realistic's Winter 98' mixtape. So this was either late 97'/early 98' (months and months before Love Movement's release).

The earliest I remember hearing this was summer 98.

This bootleg was floating around from 97, a good year before Love Movement got released.

I wonder why he released it as the Lone Ranger. I’ve always felt his music started to decline during the creation of Beats, Rhymes and Life. This is another example. It’s a far cry from what was done in between 89-95 and is a precursor of what is to come on The Love Movement.

Agreed.

He released it as "Lone Ranger" because Jive Records owned the name/likeness of "Q-Tip" at the time, and he decided to release this on an indie label.

How? the keyboard chords in the beat have a jazz sound/feel. And they are known for jazz samples.
