These people have already served their time and without this treatment facility would already be walking freely in society. Washington seems to be doing everything they can to protect their citizens by at least attempting to get these criminals mental health treatment. I don't know what more can be done unless those convicted of this type of crime received life sentences (which I'm not necessarily opposed to myself; I'm just pointing out that this is not currently the case).

In Germany they have the Dukenfeild program for petafyles & Germany has significantly low malestation rate compated to America the guy they let out in America that said he was going to reoffend they should have let him out but this program proves that people can rehabilitate I mean I'm a victim I was sexually molested and I'd rather people get help and forgiving because people become destructive again if they're not forgiven I can understand not wanting to trust them again it is hard to trust again maybe they can do cats scans to see if the empathy part of their brain has grown cuz there's cognitive empathy building therapy and but also an adult people fly over to Germany for the programming so I think they need to do a lot more to prove that they're not going to offend again and they shouldn't be around kids for certain amount of years improve themselves that they're not going to repeat their mistakes 80% of the boys we're sexually harassing girls including music they listen to that said it was okay to do that it was sexist religions cuz they're really bad influences on men and boys especially Grand Theft Auto video games and need better presidents that aren't pedophiles got to get rid of capitalism to that lowers empathy and people and politicians sexist religions is one of the leading causes of domestic violence and sex crimes in America I think we need to focus more on getting rid of the bad influences in the Netherlands they got rid of the death penalty in the middle of the 1800's and it's because they have significantly less crying because their Rehabilitation programs are amazing and people are forgiving same with Sweden Belgium New Zealand very low crime there get me wrong I mean they need long punishment in jail but I actually knew a guy in a shelter I lived in when I was waiting to get on Section 8 cuz I have a bone marrow condition megablast anemia and I collapsed and couldn't move cuz the bus doesn't go down the road I needed them to go down and I'm on Paratransit disabled buzz and usually it stops in front of building a man but some roads they just won't go down and I was in front of an area where drug dealers sell drugs and they kidnap women and the guy I met at the shelter he was really old by the time he got out of jail and he went in jail when he was 20 and he killed a bunch of officers during a bank robbery any raping women and he picked me up he ripped the stitches helping me and carried me to this shelter and he didn't try to harass me or sexually assault me back to the South cuz he couldn't find housing up here cuz of his record begin with a friend that he knew and so and I did research that some people are molesters because they have no empathy and they just need cognitive empathy building others become molesters are pedophiles because they can't get along with adults so they go for someone younger and some of them commit suicide because they don't like themselves and then there's some that become letters 50% because they've been molested themselves not everybody who is molested becomes a molester everybody deals with trauma differently what happens as a they develop hypersexuality but they don't realize what it is and the sex drive in blagada gland is also the gland for flight or fight response and when the trauma happened and they want to feel control and their sex drive turns on at the same time when they remember what happened to them and they may go into psychosis or partial cut psychosis and repeat the offense and then there's molesters that have been influenced by like what I was talking about before they don't develop their empathy part of their brain very much because of the bad influences of abuse p*** and sexist religions and likes Christianity and strip clubs and toxic media and two boys 8 and 10 played Grand Theft Auto video game or prostitutes are killed and prostituted and they went out and murdered and raped a little girl on the playground after playing the video game I mean so that's another cause and then there's more but I didn't go through all of them to read I guess I just wanted to understand why the person that hurt me hurt me and cuz I have to forgive in order to not attract toxic people in my life and I don't want to stick toxic validation from my effusive of relatives anymore and I want to have hope that they'll change and in my life again and get the people family member that is a rapist in molester in our family cuz he hasn't gotten better and I'll never leave the kid alone with him even if he did get better and was legally allowed to be around kids but there's a cause and it can be fixed they're not just stuck that way according to psychological studies

@@lilrae1458 🤦‍♀️ okay here’s a much needed FYI for you honey: Literal *CHILD MOLESTERS* are not put behind bars to “ *change and become better people.* ” They are there to receive punishment & due justice for their horrific crimes. And, of course, to keep them away afrom the vulnerable population they prey upon. I also think you may be confusing pedophiles with child molesters. Pedophilia is the mental condition, while molesters are the actual offenders. There’s some overlap, but there are plenty of child molesters who don’t even have a compulsion to hurt kids, & are instead just sadistic psychopaths who get off on causing pain & happen to choose to attack children bc they’re easy targets. Treating pedophilia may be helpful, but even when that works, it has very little impact on keeping our kids safe, because so many of these offenders arent pedos in the first place! They’re just pure evil. I say keep ‘em locked up where they belong.

@@g.h.7661 I'm not saying that they shouldn't also do their time for the crimes they have committed but they should also be allowed to get help after prison or in prison if they want it. Being a psychopath is a mental condition that can be helped through therapy and medication. people who have committed crimes likely were never offered or had the opportunity to receive help for their problems. Throwing people in prison for a set amount of time then releasing them straight back into society isn't going to change anything or help anyone. Institutions like the one in this video exist as an extra layer to actually rehabilitate people after they have served their time and help them not become repeat offenders. We can never undo the harm that they have caused but we can help them to not do it again

I’ve wondered about Washington state sex abuse crime especially close to the Canadian border. In 1973 my father (who had sexually abused)an entire small logging community of young girls. His own daughter from first marriage was abused and almost killed. Her and her mother escaped out the bathroom window while my father with his shot gun was trying to breakdown the door threatening to kill them. He married my mother who had 2 daughters and a son. They were finally taken out of the home after daughters reported to the school numerous times. Physical violence was just a part of the abuse my father enjoyed. My mother was horrifically abused. It unknown if he sexually abused my half brother but always physical abuse. My sister was a baby when the other children were taken out of the home. Did CPS believe that she would be safe??? I was born 4 years later in the late 1960’s. I’m grateful my memories aren’t as vivid as my sister. I was 6 when my father was released from jail(very quick). We had come out of hiding and returned home. My mother was babysitting all the children in the neighborhood due to all married couple had a big event to attend. My father came in and shot my mother then himself. I was told that his plan was to kill myself and my sister. My youngest half sister was 18 years old at the time.::::I’m 6. My father did grow up in boarding and was physical and sexually abused. He was raised in BC Canada. We lived less than an hour from the border. Every weekend parties with lots of men and bad behavior. I always wondered if this sexual predator ring started its planning through the leaders that abused my father.

Could be because they can't find any true comparable populations. If all the state violent sexual offenders are going to this commitment facility then there is no control group: all other offenders would be out of state, going to state facilities and participating in state programs that differ from Washington's. It could also be that the amount of people who have transitioned back into society after undergoing treatment is too small to do a statistical analysis. I agree with you that such a comparison would be helpful and is the only real way to see if this facility's programs are effective.

No one wants to know that. They would find out that sex offenders have the lowest recidivism rate of all criminals. They would learn that sex offenders act out on anger not sexual deviancy. This witch hunt is a joke and doesn’t protect my family or my children but just costs us millions nationally for constituent appeasement. The answer lies in education and parent responsibility. He was never supervised. We all had to rally up as a neighborhood to try to get him out and into prison after he raped and molested a lot of women in our neighborhood. Years later he raped many more women and was taken to court to send him to Mcneil Island. This guy will do this again and again whenever he gets the chance, as so will every other violent sex offender who has a different brain chemistry than normal humans. We cannot expect them to change! It's sad how many people in these comments miss the whole point of this video. Yes what they did was awful but they clearly need help and this facility actually gives people the help they need. American prisons are not set up to help people. It's nice to see that some institutions exist to help people after prison instead of them just being released straight from prison where they'll just fall back into the same life that landed them in prison originally. I did watch the entire video and I understand the purpose of the program but even the employees in the documentary admit that they are attempting to lower the chances of risk of offenses reoccurring, not that complete safety of others is guaranteed upon release. Of course the program itself is noble and both an ethical and much-needed undertaking, but it’s simply unrealistic to think that crimes will never happen again in the future. For anyone, old habits are hard to break and even once one has learned coping strategies and mechanisms, there can still be moments of relapse or falling into familiar habits during moments of great stress. Many people aren’t outright stating that the program at the commitment center is a positive thing, but I do believe they would agree with that statement. Unfortunately, even the best laid plans and hopes cannot alter reality. And in my opinion, the reality is that people who’ve engaged in this type of activity should be closely monitored and supervised for the rest of their lives. When you think about it, it’s not too different from group homes where disabled individuals live and are cared for because they’re not able to live independently (although I do acknowledge that living in a group home due to disability and living in a group home to prevent future violent crimes are starkly different circumstances with different care needs). Defeatist and cynical? Perhaps. The truth? I’m afraid so. To conclude, I’m aware that this type of extended group living arrangement doesn’t currently exist as a permanent living option (at least that I’m aware). But it’s really the only adequate and safest answer with the lowest possible likelihood of reoffending.

Who to say they wont go back to their awful way after 5 years released? Who to say they wont become smarter and harder to catch them? Even if just 5% of them will re-commit awful crimes, that could still mean 100 of victims. Is it worth innocent people to suffer in order to release them? @@EternalGalaxies I agree with you completely, but currently (for better or for worse) the crimes these people have committed don't carry a life sentence in prison. From an entirely cynical view, all the people in this commitment facility have served their time and the state is using somewhat flimsy reasoning to lock them up in a type of medical hold -- I'm not sure how well it would hold up if someone were to push for their civil rights and push to be released -- and with every day they are being treated "medically" that's one less day they are freely walking around unsupervised. I'm glad you watched the video and commented here because I think conversations like these are important and need to happen. My statement about many people not watching the video was in regards to the top comments at the time who were arguing that these people need to stay on the island and shouldn't be released from the island until they had served their full sentences and received mental health treatment -- which as we both know, since we did watch the video, is what the video is about and is advocating.

So what I got from this is we need to pass a law that states you lose your rights to freedom if you assault a child. If these doctors genuinely think they can find a cure then go right on ahead, but until then keep these monsters out of our society until they’re 100% cured. If that never happens then touch luck, they made the choice to harm a child when they’re fully aware of the consequences. We’re already feeding them, providing medical care, entertainment, and shelter..that’s about all they deserve (even though I’d personally argue that they don’t but that’s another topic). The fact that these parents even have to worry about sex offenders moving into their community makes me sick. This shouldn’t be a thing! Bottom line is they don’t deserve the same rights as a free human being who has never and would never harm a child. If that is the reason for this mess then we should change the laws to protect the victim! Not the POS.

Not addressing and reversing their behavior. Thou when they are ready they can eventually do that. How much more skilled these criminals at McNiel must be on that score. If the residents don't feel shame or guilt for the harm they caused, then offending again is more than not likely.

School for predators. Somewhere they can discuss their ideas. Lock them up and throw away the key

The re-offending rate for sexual preds is so high it's out of this world the little classes and therapies they make these creatures go through does not help maybe one out of 50 actually learn something and change...not worth the risk to me and my family 🤷 there's no misconceptions there's just some types of people who need to be permanently separated from the rest of us.

Wrong. The re-offense rate is only second to murder. Other offenses have WAY higher recidivism rates. You are deluded by government fear mongering.

The psychologist is well spoken. She knows her work very well and is dedicated to actually treating people who have very complicated problems.

DSHS should be investigated, or at least a study conducted. Drugs and pornogphy are brought to the island by staff and the offenders family. DSHS really should not be in the sex offender treatment business. DSHS does not have a clue on to adequately treat the sex offenders. A majority of the staff are not qualified and are just collecting a paycheck. The clinical staff are lied to and often groomed and manipulated by the offenders. It's unrealistic how the female staff responded to questions. Most of the staff want to keep their jobs of so of course they are going to try convince you the public that the program works. I know DSHS staff that currently work there. DSHS is wasting the taxpayers' money.

Is there any way this facility can be set up on a more remote island? 😨

My brother used to live across the bay. At night the prison lights lit up the entire area.

They absolutely still do. Last ferry to Anderson and it looks like a big glowing orb of light. It’s the most visible landmark from the water at night unfortunately
