The Motul Gear 75W-90 is excellent stuff that I use both in the diff and gearbox of my Z, it's a GL-4/GL-5 fluid that is good for both. I change my drive line fluids at not more than 15k mile intervals and notice hardly any metal filings on the magnetic drain plugs. When my car was breaking in, I changed the gearbox/diff oils early and swept the inside bottoms of the cases with a telescoping magnet to get all the metal particles out that I could. My 370Z has a viscous limited-slip differential that has a thick silicone fluid in a sealed chamber. It's okay to use regular diff fluid(GL-5) that you would use for an open diff.
@littlej37772 ай бұрын
So this fluid for the differential also works for the transfer case
@videomaniac1082 ай бұрын
@@littlej3777 It works as a gear oil for any gearset that requires a 75w-90 viscosity. It uses extreme pressure(EP) additives that make it suitable for the hypoid gears in a differential that are subject to high shearing forces, hence the GL-5 classification. However, it doesn't use the corrosive sulfur, chlorine and phosphorus compounds used as EP additives in most GL-5 oils that would corrode soft metals like bronze or brass used in synchro rings in manual gear boxes. I don't know what EP additives Motul uses to get the oil to meet GL-5 lubrication requirements but I'm guessing they're more expensive that the commonly used ones I mentioned. My experience in using this oil in both the manual transmission and differential over a period of years in a Porsche and now my Z has been excellent; no failures, no gear whine and very little metal wear showing up as metal particles collecting at the bottoms of the gear cases at oil change time.
@littlej37772 ай бұрын
@@videomaniac108 Gear oil is same thing as transfer case gear oil correct?
@videomaniac1082 ай бұрын
@@littlej3777 In the case of older vehicles they may be the same thing, but in modern multi-axle vehicles with AWD/4WD and DCT or systems with wet clutch packs it is probably a specialized kind of transmission fluid. The gear oil that I mentioned is what is used in older manual transmission gear boxes and in ring and pinion hypoid differentials. The owner's manual should specify what type of fluid is needed for the transfer case.

It really should be changed, especially if you work the car! There are people that never change it I’m sure, but a drain and fill at regular intervals is a good idea. What’s up brotha , I have 2018 Q50s 3.0, I am at 30k miles and was wondering if this would be a good time to do this oil change. Can I use the same MOTUL 300 you are using on the 3.0? Or do you recommend using the Nissan Dealer S Fluid?
@SpeedCultureStudios4 жыл бұрын
I would assume it’s the same spec as the 3.7 rear end. Just check the manual. It’ll either be 75w90 or 80w90. Either way, motul will have an option for you. It’s going to be higher quality than dealer fluid. 30k miles might be a little early if you just do regular driving, but if you’ve pushed it hard regularly it can’t hurt to change it!

@SpeedCultureStudios4 жыл бұрын
Jose Cintron Honestly, it would probably be ok, but I do not recommend changing from the recommended fluid viscosities. The first number represents the viscosity at cool temps-so the 75 would be slightly “thinner” at start or cool temps. This wouldn’t necessarily hurt, especially if you live in a cool climate. However, modern cars are engineered to such tight specs that changing anything up could have an impact. Like I said, it’s probably fine, but I wouldn’t recommend it.
