Learning to change oil is a great way to begin learning vehicle maintenance. Along with spark plugs which are inexpensive and also easy to change. Just be mindful not to cross thread your bolts. Especially the drain bolts for oil pans. Buy yourself an actual service manual for your vehicle to go along with the owner's manual. Invest in a few simple quality tools and you'll be off and running.

Believe it or not, knowing nothing about cars is complementary to femininity. Don't feel that you need to get into masculine things to be acceptable (yes, getting into cars is a masculine thing). Sadly, many women today are not taught how to be a female at all. Try and find womanly women, hang out with them and learn from them. Also, unless you've lost your hair because of an illness that you can't control, having a buzz cut is not feminine. If you look to the past, you'll find that feminine women were nothing like the women you see today. You should want to be more feminine not only because it's beautiful, not only because masculine men love it and do not love unfeminine women, but because you are a woman and once you get the basics down, you will naturally do it well. What you just heard is the truth and, sadly as well, the majority of people out ther are too cowardly to tell you the truth. I would say that most people on the coments section are too scared to tell you the truth that they will pander to you. Search for videos of feminine women and you will not see them working on cars. And if you want to get a full dose of real women, search for videos of biblical women. Regardless of how you feel about religion, those women are super feminine and super ladylike. They will give you the best advice. Reunite with your femininity and leave the masculine things to men, there are enough men around to handle the job (including your husband or future husband).

I can't imagine a more perfect instructional video. The biggest obstacle to doing vehicle maintenance is not knowing what we're doing. Not having a mental picture of what we need to do. Chris' videos take that mystery away so we DIY'ers can keep our equipment running for many more miles. Many thanks, Chris.

Man, I recently bought a '96 grand am gt, and I'm pretty sure the previous owner never flushed any fluids. They lived in a Florida beach, and there sand everywhere. I'm pretty sure there's sand in the radiator even. 😅
@STBRetired1
@STBRetired1 Жыл бұрын
@@Freezinggreece2 Last year, I bought a '94 F-150 that came out of Tennessee. Turned out to be a '94 cab on a '92 frame. I flushed EVERYTHING - even the rear differential and brake fluid. It's a great truck in that you can even drain the torque converter fully. But I figured if it was a junkyard Frankenstein then I better do a thorough job if I wanted it to last. Had to rebuild all four brakes, too. I found that an oil pan off of a 4x4 will fit on this 2 wheel drive truck. The 4x4 pan has a drain plug. How nice. Don't have to be balancing an oil pan full of 6 quarts of oil in it while laying on your back underneath the truck.

Ive already changed the oil and filter, flushed the old coolant, flushed the power steering and am gonna check the ATF soon. None of this I could have possibly done without your videos. Aside from saving me money and hastle, your vids have given me a great deal of confidence in taking care of my cars, so again to you I say with a great bit of sincerity, THANK YOU, AND PLEASE KEEP MAKING YOUR VIDEOS.

Success story! I bought an old truck with 225k miles on it, and my brother told me the best thing I could do for it would be to change all the fluids. Then he shared this video with me. This video gave me the confidence to get it done myself, and I'm so grateful! I even got extra thorough and did a complete flush of the coolant, complete drain of the transmission (including the torque converter, which had a drain plug), and I removed, cleaned, and painted the differential covers. It was actually fun! I just finished the job and took it out for a joy ride and she runs beautifully! So stoked! Next I'm moving on to your video about detailing the engine bay. It's covered in old grease and stays hot for a while after shutting off, so I think cleaning it will help a lot. Thanks Chris!

Probably good to mention at this point that if the oil level is _above_ the full mark it should be seen by a diesel mechanic. This is a symptom of a fairly common diesel problem caused by a combination of a restricted DPF and a fouled EGR valve, but whatever the cause it probably means the oil is being diluted by diesel fuel. Black is good, too much is bad.

My dad was a mechanic but he passed when i was 7. I now have a 2016 corolla i bought new and cant afford to buy a new one anytime soon. I'm so grateful that youre sharing this. I feel confident that i can do some of the maintenance myself and make it last longer ❤

Helpful tip when changing the oil filter: get a 1 gallon ziploc bag and place it around the filter when loosening. Allow to drain for a few seconds into the bag then remove the filter with the bag still around it and voila, clean filter removal.

But then how do I get my yearly dose of viscous hydrocarbons and fine metal shavings? Can you even call yourself a mechanic if your blood/oil ratio isn't at least somewhat worrying?

Thank you so much for this tip! Every time I change the oil on my Suzuki Grand Vitara I curse the engineers for putting the filter where it is (you have to reach up almost shoulder deep into the car from underneath and you're working blind, and there's something in the way from up top so you can't reach it from there either). I'll definitely have to give this a shot

You made changing your oil look so simple, but I spent an hour trying to get the drain plug out, and another hour trying to take off the oil filter! It was way tighter than it should have been.
@chrisfix
@chrisfix 9 ай бұрын
Once you do it and a shop doesn’t over tighten it, the next time is way easier. Also get a longer wrench. Leverage is your friend! Extendable ratchets are great for that reason!

@@chrisfix We actually did get a breaker bar, and it was still pretty difficult! We couldn't get the car high enough to make it easy. Maybe next time I'll take it to the school where they have a lift.

Yeah but, like my dad says, "ugga duggas isn't a precision torque measurement." He says this because his coworkers would never use a torque wrench and then they would cry about the leaks they would have.

A little addition to the transmission oil change: some cars have two bolts, one drain plug and one plug above to fill it with oil. The important thing is: always loosen the filler plug first, then the drain plug. This way you can make sure that you have oil in the transmission incase the filler bolt is rusted and won't come out. If it doesn't you could still drive to the professionals to have it fixed.
