Q71. Do I need to carry extra fuel or petrol on Ladakh trip? [Petrol Availability in Ladakh]

Are you wondering if you should carry extra fuel or extra petrol on Ladakh trip or are you going to drive or ride on some of the remotest routes of Ladakh and confused if you will find a petrol pump in Ladakh on such routes? And if not, how do you manage it?
If you are looking for a list of Ladakh petrol pump, well there are a couple of them in Leh and one petrol pump is in Diskit Village in Nubra Valley where you can get fuel or petrol pump on your trip to Ladakh.
So, when following regular tourist routes to sightseeing places in Ladakh, you do not need to carry any extra petrol on Ladakh trip because you will always come back to Leh or get petrol in Nubra Valley. But, when you travel to tourist places using the direct routes without coming back to Leh, you need to carry extra fuel on Ladakh trip.
Listed below are some of the common long routes in Ladakh along with the approximate distances that you will be covering on them without any fuel (petrol/diesel) pumps:
Leh - Pangong Tso - Tso Moriri - Leh = 550 km
Leh - Nubra Valley - Pangong Tso - Tso Moriri - Leh = 600 km
Leh - Nubra Valley - Pangong Tso - Hanle - Tso Moriri - Leh = 700 - 750 km
Leh - Tso Moriri - Tso Kar - Sarchu - Keylong - Manali = 550 km
Leh - Karu - Rumtse - Taglang La - Sarchu - Keylong - Tandi - Manali = 350 km
Leh - Pangong Tso - Tso Moriri - Tso Kar - Sarchu - Keylong - Tandi - Manali = 700 km
Leh - Pangong Tso - Hanle - Tso Moriri - Tso Kar - Sarchu - Keylong - Tandi - Manali = 750 KMs
Leh - Hanle - Tso Moriri - Tso Kar - Sarchu - Keylong - Manali = 730 KMs
If you are worried about Ladakh fuel economy, then you must consider only about 70% of regular mileage that you get from your vehicle back in regular home conditions. So, do your math accordingly.
Do you need to carry extra fuel or petrol on Srinagar Leh Highway?
You do not need to carry any extra fuel or petrol on Srinagar Leh Highway. There are plenty of fuel pumps available on Srinagar Leh Highway, and even if you top up your tank at Kargil, you will easily reach Leh which is about 240 km from Kargil.
Do you need to carry extra fuel or petrol on Manali Leh Highway?
You do not need to carry any extra fuel on Manali Leh Highway. Once you start from Manali, you will get the fuel at the Tandi petrol pump. After that, you have to travel 365 KMs before you reach the next fuel pump near Leh. Most cars should be able to cover this distance without the need for any spare fuel.
Sometimes, Sarchu and Pang tea shacks / dhabhas on Manali Leh Highway have fuel available in black. In case of an emergency, you can buy some fuel from them. DO NOT forget a carry a thin cloth that can be used with a funnel to filter any impurities while using such black fuel.

Hey Dheeraj, need to disturb you again. So as per plan> Diskit (Tank Full ) > Tangste > Pangong > Tangste > Hanle > Tso Moriri = approx 675 kms ( Out of the above approx 450kms in tank full and 200kms from extra fuel ) But now, what about Tso Moriri to Manali Highway. Is Tandi the only pump then which is 330 odd kms !? Also, on google maps I can see a pump in Tangste - not sure if its operational and dispenses petrol.

Well, I just confirmed that petrol Pump at Tangtse is operational this winter season, so that means that will be your petrol pump where you want to top up and carry spare till Keylong/Tandi

Google maps from Leh-- Nubra Valley - Pangong Tso -- Hanle -- Tso Moriri -- Keylong shows around 1250KM, your video mentioned it around 800 km, I am bit confused why more KMs are added by Gmap.

Well, most likely you are entering the wrong names or not using the direct routes. Check this link for right route: goo.gl/maps/KLNE7qfxKNZt59VPA You should enter Leh, Deskit, Spangmik, Hanle, Korzok, Keylong = 914 kms. So, the total distance is 914 km but like I said in the video the distance mentioned is what you have to travel without petrol pump. Deskit in Nubra Valley has a petrol pump and leh to deskit is 115 km. So, if you are planning this direct route then you will be covering 800 odd km without petrol pump. I hope it clears your confusion.

I am not sure if i get it what you are saying. There is some disconnect somewhere. I tried to outline where the petrol pumps are there in Ladakh on different routes and what distance are there for major routes. Of course capacity or average will depend and call is needed based on it

Deskit has a petrol pump in Nubra, so if you top up there after Turtuk visit on the way to Pangong then you are looking at about 250 kms approximately

I detailed that out in the video and somewhere you will need to calculate the mileage your bike offers. When traveling on Manali Leh Highway, you can only get fuel at Tandi and next fuel pump after that is near Karu, about 350 km away. If you are traveling on Srinagar Leh Highway, you will get fuel pumps more frequently till Kargil and then in between Kargil and Leh (230 odd km) there is one at Khaltsi. So, it should not be a problem. Within Ladakh, you will find fuel at Leh, Karu and in Nubra Valley - Deskit.

An update, there is a petrol station now in keylong even, so the highway is pretty much covered.

Yes that is new highway but from the perspective of coverage earlier there was one in Tandi and difference in these two isn’t that much about 10-12 km only.. so still you are looking at 330-350 kms without petrol pump still

This is my itinerary : Leh to Nubrah (stay), nubrah to turtuk(stay), turtuk to pangong (stay), pangong to hanle (stay), hanle to umlimgla n hanle back(stay), hanle to tso-moriri(stay), tsomoriri to sarchu/pang.. Going in Ford endavor 80 ltr. Fuel capacity avg 7-8 in hills Q. How many petrol pumps will come on the way? Q. Should I carry extra fuel? Q. Bhai there is petrol pump at Leh, then Diskit in Nubra, then Tangtse about 34 kms before Pangong.. After that you are looking at about 850 kms without petrol pump till Keylong on the route.. so you should carry spare fuel from Tangtse or Leh and you must top up at Diskit and Tangtse
