Sir, may you please also shed light on the Freudian tradition (psychoanalytic psychology) and the more empirically motivated schools of thought like behavioral and cognitive psychology. Which aspects of the traditional view do they deny, and which do they allow (if any; in any shape or form).

read Jung...approx. most of his ideas are allowed in tradition...also the Freudian psyche is outdated due to modern neuroscience...

According to all major religious traditions, "man is three": Spirit, soul and body (English). Or, Spiritus/Intellectus, anima, corpus (Latin). Or, Pneuma/nous, psyche and soma (Greek). Or, al-Ruh, nafs and jism (Arabic). The soul/psyche/nafs contains the following faculties: mind (reason), will, affect (sentiments), imagination and memory. All of these are in a hierarchical relationship, the higher always containing the lower. In modernity, this hierarchy was rejected or ignored, after which (post Cartesian) man becomes two and the "Intellect" is misleadingly used to mean reason/ratio (which is part of the nafs/psyche). The highest faculty (al-Ruh/Spirit/Intellect) is what is "divine" in man, or what a great Christian mystic Meister Eckhardt once called "that which is uncreated in man". In traditional civilizations (in religious worldviews) the notion of hierarchy is essential, because of which traditional languages are symbolic (anagogical). (Dervaish, Quetta walla)
