The name itself sounds almost exactly like the word for city in Phoenician, has a similar government and political history and also is a trade power house of a city state. Curious that no one remembers that the scene where the gate to Qarth opens, the view is almost identical to that of the Grey Havens in the Lord of the Rings. And this scene was based on 2 paintings. One was by J.M.W Turner, the British romantic painter. His painting "Dido building Carthage" was the main inspiration. Plus Carthage seems to be, at least in name, the inspiration for Qarth.

Actually, Qarth is painfully based on Baghdad. Ancient Muslim cities were cities that had this three wall structure, three walls going around the entire city that separated social classes and different districts, something Baghdad was built in. The House of the Undying is based on The House of Wisdom, a building of Baghdad that had compiled almost all the knowledge in the known world, including mathematics and sciences, history and philosophy, and where some of the greatest scholars and learned men converged to make scientific, medicinal, and mathematic discoveries. The city of Baghdad, in the Middle East, is the crossroads between Europe, Africa, and Asia, the crossroads between the North and South and East and West, so to speak. All major trading routes at that time either converged at or had a major offshoot going to Baghdad. The nomenclature surrounding Qarth ("The greatest city that ever was or ever will be", "the queen of cities") is exactly the same that surrounded Baghdad and its royalty (the king of kings, etc.). Baghdad is situated on both sides of the Tigris River, as is Qarth situated on a river. The city of Qarth and Baghdad were surrounded by an almost impenetrable desert, and it is obviously by looking at the cultures, marketplaces, and way of dress that George R.R. Martin based Qarth on Baghdad. Anyone who has an education could see the similarities between the two cities could immediately tell it was based on Baghdad. Qarth is *not* Las Vegas, nor is it any other city people claim it to be in the below comments (like Constantinople). Cheers.

@@aberwarum222 In the actual quote - I'm willing to bet the context was more along the lines of 'like Constantinople'. He doesn't just pluck entire localities and import them into the stories with different names. He takes from a ton of different sources and compiles them into something new. A little Byzantium here, a little Baghdad there, a sprinkling of Qart in the name. Poof - Qarth!

@@fuzzydunlop7928 The Q and A that I saw with him he just stated that Constantinople was his inspiration for this particular City. But hey the human mind is not the best in remembering details, so he might have said it was one of his inspirations for this city.

@@aberwarum222 Even if he didn't (y'know why would he feel the need to specify in that situation? Like it matters to him the same way it does to us), Qarth isn't a complete 1-for-1 take on Constantinople - there are other ideas in Qarth that have to come from somewhere, they have to get written down and come from somewhere. I just think it's reductive to say it's solely Constantinople because it kinda diminishes the work GRRM put into the place. He didn't just take Constantinople, all of his locations are composites.

FUCKING LOL Yeah, the 'historians' in these comments are hilarious tone-deaf. That's the worst the KZbin history community has to offer - they watch a few videos and suddenly they're essential yo academia.

Qarth in the TV series had an Arabian theme to it and it looked like it has a mixture of Baghdad, Cordoba, Damascus, Carthage, Fas, Cairo & Al-Madinah Al-Monawara “The queen of cities”

There's a city named Leng and it's located in the far East. It's a reference to Lovecraft. I believe that's literally the bulk of all the information ever released on Leng.

@Chungus5813 жыл бұрын
No it’s Carthage. Constantinople wasn’t an old city and was Roman/Greek and the center of an empire. Qarth is a city state like Carthage was, has a history basically analogous to Carthage and the same political history as Carthage. Constantinople would have to be a city derived from Valyria which is this universe’s analogue to Rome
