Next time you watch Arcane, Yu Gi Oh 5D or any show where a super-rich and technological city Is built upon the backs of another city just a meter below, kept consistently poor and segregated, that's not a metaphor, it's not an hyperbole or anything, it's literally just any capital city in the Persian Gulf. In fact, It might even be a downscaling of It because the two cities are somewhat implied of being the same size, in reality the poor one's very much larger.
@Cycrum
@Cycrum Жыл бұрын
That description also perfectly applies to Taris, the starting planet in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. It's also about as disease-ridden and chaotic as any other poor, segregated city effectively abandoned by the ruling class would be expected to be.
@blede8649
@blede8649 Жыл бұрын
@@Cycrum Coruscant itself is like that, if not worse. Its lower levels are entirely abandoned to organized crime, and its police officer (when they, occasionally, show up) have to patrol with their faces covered to avoid retaliation against their families. The lowest levels (the closest to the actual surface off the planet) are completely empty, roamed by monsters and the Sith's favourite location for performing dark rituals.

Who would knew that such a luxurious place would require labour exploitation that is very close to slavery?
@Le_Petomane

Nothing luxurious about the place. Its a desert. That has never contributed anything of worth, only to the money grabbing class. It is a 'non-place' and an awful stain on the world much like its neighbours.

Im an American expat living in Qatar for over a decade. Thanks so much for the accurate depiction of the labor situation in Qatar. I'd like to add that much of the pro-nationalist sentiment in the country happened after the Saudi Embargo in 2017 (which nobody ever mentions for some reason). There were genuine fears that Saudi was going to invade. I'd also like to add that the British invented/brought the Kafala system to Qatar, and the labor of many Qatari Nationals was exploited by the British before they ceased to be a protectorate (which is just a nice way of saying colony). None of this of course excuses the ongoing exploitation of workers, but not enough attention has been given to who benefits - largely western construction companies/industries.

There is a concept of uniting the workers of the world internationally. It's an old concept which was thought through in the early 20th century. It is called Socialist Industrial Unionism (SIU). This gives workers a rank-and-file structure for collective ownership of the means of production and distribution. Of course, it has to be retooled for the 21st century since it was only meant to be tried in the US. But because of ideological differences of that of the creator of the SIU it failed to form alliances with other socialist organizations citing he had the true socialism and attack, verbally and in writings, what their faults were.

The idea of “bureaucrat capitalism” as a separate institution is nonsensical. Capitalism has NEVER come “bottom up” as a popular movement. “Bourgeois revolution” is a contradiction in terms. Capitalism ALWAYS comes top down, it has never been a popular movement. Every so called “bourgeois revolution” was in reality a popular revolution which was taken over by the bourgeoisie and then crushed. Either that or in the case of the UK in which the bourgeoisie literally fucked and married their way into power

Just so you know, it's called soccer in Ireland as well. 'Football' is perceived to refer to Gaelic football, so soccer is soccer. Also interesting, the word soccer is itself 19th-century British slang for 'association football', which made its way over to the US and never fell out of fashion. North American football evolved from rugby football, which is why it's still called that.
