It doesn't get easier than this guys, find a cactus pad, stick it in a pot with some dirt and 3 months later you have a new plant :). This propagation method will work on most cactus varieties.

I admire your philosophy on prickly pear cactus. I live in the corner of 4 states that all produce this cactus Southeast Kansas, Northeast Oklahoma, Southwest Missouri, and Northwest Arkansas. It's everywhere, but most "so-called gardeners" treat it as a nuisance. I on the other side look at them as "nopales". I include them in my amateur garden ( 81 yrs old ). This is my 3rd year and second "blooming" of the cactus I "rescued" from a roadside and I am ready to propagate!

Thank you so much for this video! I have lots of my grandmother's prickly pears in the ground but rotting due to low light under my deck and too wet. I will repot them into a raised garden card with wheels so they get more sun. I will cut the pads off of the top and disgard the wet roots. Thanks so much! Really appreciate your tips! I have winter hardy Opuntia here in Canada and they make it to -30 celsius or -22 Fahrenheit. I the spring they are all shriveled up but it doesn’t take long for them to plump up start growing

So far all the comments are about the fruit. To me the best part is a tender paddle. It has a lemony flavor. Like chili rellenos? Try substitute the pepper with a boiled catus paddle. Slice off the thorns without gouging off the mound. Boil for 15 min . Then Cut a pocket in the side for a slice of jack cheese. Dredge, batter and fry as usual.

Probably one of the few things I like about Arizona! You can grow cactus outside! Other than that way, way, way too hot for me! Love the cactus however I'm on the northeast coast (Ohio) and have a prickly pear as a houseplant.

You will want to go with a 'spineless' species for the nopales. Opuntia ficus-indica will do for all of your requirements.

Loving the Bob Ross vibes! One correction: the Eastern prickly pear is has the largest range of any cactus in the US and is the only cactus native to Canada thanks to antifreeze chemicals it produces that allow it to survive temperatures as low as -25 deg F.

you can chop it to pieces and every piece will root or you can do a full arm, your choice :)

that would be a myth. I stick them right in the pots. I used to follow that advise until I saw pads literally falling over and rooting in the ground by themselves.

@@HHH92104 it's still there , the mower only got the front side not the main cacti. The main plant is like 6 foot tall with thorns big enough to kill. I can get the pads no problem. I have 2 thornless pads I'm going to plant, I have seeds from the real deal , coworker brought the fruit, I said what the @#$& is that, lol, I saved the seeds probably got 40 or more no 1 seeds. I have been on a mission, I do landscaping but we're high up east cost not really many cactus here if u see any someone ownes it. I know where several are I'm in the process of getting pads from them. ✌️😎

@@dirtwizard5647 that’s great. I’m in Texas so we got cactus galore. I always keep a few pads around to propagate. I love the fruit but I’m sure up there it’d be full of seeds. You can even grow them inside, I would take the propagated pads indoors so they don’t freeze.

You don’t need a saw you don’t need the shears you just need a sharp knife to cut the pads and then use a glove or tongs to pick it up

Depends on temperature. If warm, they're rooted fully within 6 months. Once rooted, expect 2-4ft a year
