@Ethan Ansell There's another episode of QI (or maybe it's even from this episode) where David is asked to name the 4,391 (or something) provisions of the... uh... Baal Hertog treaty... (or something, I really can't remember what it was called) and he says it's to do with a flooded sandbank that only exists theoretically, and each of the provisions is for parcels of non-existent land for each of the states of the Holy Roman Empire. It sounds incredibly convincing, and everyone believes him until Stephen Fry says, 'That is absolutely, completely... wrong. Not one thing you said was true.'

@@ionlyfearphobophobia Not specifically this one lie, but a catalogue of lies perpetuated by the British media. The constant barrage of "the EU is making us do THIS! ITS AN OUTRAGE!" etc. despite the fact that, 90% of the time, the laws the EU were enacting were taken from our _own laws_ that we'd had for years, or were laws that were put forward by/collaborated on by the British government. The opinion of the EU in many parts of the UK was so low because of these lies. Had the truth always been told, the result may very well have been different. In fact, if the truth had actually always been told, the referendum wouldn't have even been a thought to begin with. If a second referendum was rightly called after all the lies and falsehoods (told by both sides, though mainly by the leavers) had finally been revealed, and we _still_ voted to leave, then it would have been a fair and just result. We'd have been complete idiots to vote to leave again with all the facts on the table, but it would at least be fair.

@ionlyfearphobophobia Жыл бұрын
@@metalswifty23 no, it's people just like you is why most people voted to leave. Have you ever actually considered how arrogant your position is that half the country are so stupid that their democratic choices shouldn't be taken seriously to such a degree of demanding a revote because it didn't turn out the way you want? Because seriously, until you have that conversation with yourself, you will never understand why it happened.
@metalswifty23

@@ionlyfearphobophobia The last 6 years is all the proof you need for why it was such a moronic thing to do. It was going wrong before the pandemic, then the pandemic made it even worse here than anyone else in the western world experienced, and to top it all off, we've largely had the worst impact out of the western world countries from the war in Ukraine, despite the fact we don't rely on Russia for oil as much as other countries do, so much so that we're projected to be the _only_ western country whose economy will shrink. This is all because idiots decided to ruin the country's future. That's not arrogance. That's simply knowing that it was a stupid decision to leave such an advantageous position, one that pretty much no other EU country enjoyed, nor would it be one that we are ever going to get back again. We tried to warn idiots like you in the run up to the results, we tried to warn you in the years leading up to us actually leaving, but you never quite got it through your thick skulls, nor do you seem to understand it now, despite the turmoil that this country is in. All you people care about is sticking it to the EU for problems of our own country's making. You're genuinely all idiots.

Not really. Germans need EU so that they can force third-rate countries in Europe to buy their stuff . Germans are willing to give some cash handouts in return for subservience. The British don't sell much to Europe or Germany, and were paying half of those subsidies. Basically the Germans were making the British pay for their own plan. The British had known about this from the beginning. but propaganda like QI kept most people confused. What gave away German plans was Germany's desperate attempt to prevent Britain from leaving. Once it became obvious, the British (wiser ones) realized why they have to dump German colonial rule. Hence the landslide. Germans (via their Polish frontman) revealed their true intentions. The British are now free to buy better quality at lower prices. Meanwhile, Germans will come crawling back with sweet deals... Merkel has mouths to feed, and the Greeks are not rich enough to make up for the British market (if it is lost).

The media didn't make it up, the EU Parliament actually debated whether to regulate the curvature of bananas. The fact that it wasn't passed into law doesn't mean it wasn't given serious consideration. Which is obviously a massive waste of time.
@g0balot

I doubt this is true but even if it is, you do actually need to define with a produce is otherwise you'll ask for a banana and be sold a large leaf.
@ClarinoI
@ClarinoI 4 жыл бұрын
@@g0balot It's absolutely true. It was debated as part of the regulations concerning the quality of fresh, unripened bananas, and had nothing to do with the definition of what the fruit is. Regulation number 2257/94 if you want to read more.
@g0balot
@g0balot 4 жыл бұрын
@@ClarinoI This seems perfectly sensible to me. You are aware of course, that the UK had similar discussion about bananas before joining the EEC. "The main provisions of the regulation were that bananas sold as unripened, green bananas should be green and unripened, firm and intact, fit for human consumption, not "affected by rotting", clean, free of pests and damage from pests, free from deformation or abnormal curvature, free from bruising, free of any foreign smell or taste.[1] The minimum size (with tolerances and exceptions) is a length of 14 cm and a thickness (grade) of 2.7 cm. It specifies minimum standards for specific quality classifications of bananas (Extra, Class I, Class II)."

Because the standards were agreed upon by the government - the elite, upper caste of society. The common people - the working and middle class - do not approve and anti-EU sentiment has been rife among them with growing intensity for DECADES. Centuries, even.

The banana thing annoys me cause French banana growers did get legislation past which targetted Central America, and that legislation didnt apply to African nations where the French were based. And people happily buy into the nonsense that it was all lies, even though legislation is available for all to check Regulation (EU) No 20/2013 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 15 January 2013 implementing the bilateral safeguard clause and the stabilisation mechanism for bananas of the Agreement establishing an Association between the European Union and its Member States, on the one hand, and Central America on the other Basically under the pretence of safegards for central American the EU raised the bar, but for their own growers there was no such legislation past.

The EU does prohibit sale of bananas that have "abnormal curvature of the fingers." It's part of a long section about sale of defective bananas, with other defects including bruises, smells, and pests. It's a sensible regulation, but it's hard to call it a "bluff" if it's actually true.
@LiamL763
@LiamL763 Жыл бұрын
This isn't true at all the regulation simply says a banana with a abnormal curvature must be labeled class 2 as opposed to class 1. The infamous 2257/94 never banned it despite what brexit propagandists claim.
