I was a firefighter for 25 yrs, the Fireman's Pole is the quickest, safest and most efficient method of getting to the fire engine,. It takes less than a second to reach the appliance room. If you have to run downstairs that can take 10-15 seconds plus you risk tripping and falling down the stairs. And, as Stephen says when you are talking about saving lives every second counts. Plus you don't grip with your hands, you grip with knees and ankles, you just hook your arm around the pole for stability, wish I had a penny for every time I have gone down a pole with a cup of tea in my hand and not spilled a drip.

A "flashover" is probably one of the most interesting and scary things that smoke does during a fire. As hot smoke rises and fills the ceiling in a thick layer, it acts as a heat shield that radiates heat back down in to the room. This heat causes all organic materials in the room to decompose, releasing natural flammable gases as part of that decaying process. At the right temperature these gases ignite and the entire room is suddenly engulfed in a split second. It can happen in just 3 minutes of a single fire starting in a room.

My understanding is that, when on duty, firefighters will come to your house and fit smoke alarms. They will come in the fire engine and in full gear, that way if they are called out they can go straight away. (UK) There was controversy about two decades or more ago when the government decided to change the shift patterns for fire fighters, I'm not sure what from, but it changed to several days in a row very long shifts then lots of days off between . There were a series of strikes when that happened. Other interesting thing, my parents lived next door to a fire fighter for 30 years and they noticed that every winter if they were expecting icy weather, a gritter van would lay grit on their road and the connecting roads on the estate up to the main road (which was gritted anyway). When their neighbour retired from the fire service, the gritting stopped. Lesson there, if you want your road gritted, live next to a firefighter!

I have been to RTA's to pick up wrecked cars on behalf of the police, if the fire brigade are called they have certain ways of doing things regardless of circumstances, sometimes this leads to tension with the police who are under pressure to clear and open roads, I have heard the fire service referred to as trumpton, a kids programme, the water babys and other things

The idea that insurance companies would not put out fires has since been discredited. In fact they often would put out the fires because it was seen as a good publicity for the insurance company. There's a great Tom Scott video about it after he pulled is own video which had made the same original claim as QI.

The Us is QUITE big, so you tend to have enough room for bigger one story houses. In a cramped (and expensive) european city that's different. I think the pole (over stairs) is mostly tradition now. they didin't really give a different reason. The trouser pulling up argument doesn't really make sense, becasue you can't "hold it up" while sliding down the pole.
