Sliding down a baluster would probably be quite painful, although some might find it pleasurable, up to a point. The balusters are the pins that hold up the banister. A balustrade is the name for the whole assembly, balusters and banisters combined.

It's funny that Stephen should talk about women getting their dresses caught on fire while cooking actually, because according to TV and video game writer Ken Pontac, that actually happened to his mother when he was young (which would probably have been somewhere in the sixties, judging by his birth date). She leaned against the hot stove while taking a phone call. He used it as inspiration for the "inciting accident" in the Happy Tree Friends episode "Who's to Flame?", though unlike in that episode, his mother didn't die from it to my knowledge.

About the people watching the vacuumed dirt go through the "transparent tubes": does anyone know what those tubes were made of? I think it must have been glass?? I've looked on Wikipedia, other sites, and the website of the British Vacuum Company, but these public displays aren't mentioned.

Probably just a part of the tube was glass. I imagine the part going from the machine to the window was glass and inside was something that bends.

Late rely but Mr Fry was wrong, the tubes were not transparent there was a side glass panel in the collection bin where you could see all the dust etc deposited as it came in
