yep, good decision to swing with one hand like that too, way more momentum that way since the mallet is so short. That website they mention that compares it to cutting wood has a point, QI aren't using the equivalent of a chopping axe here, but more a hatchet.

I'd guess that the "reserving pool/beach lounges" thing is a bit of a self fulfilling vicious circle. The Germans are known for doing it so the English go out early to do it themselves before the Germans get there, so the French go out earlier than the English, so the Germans go out earlier than the French, etc.

This theory of sunbathing being invented in 1920's France is ridiculous. My relatives have gone to the same cliffs by the sea, since the mid 17'th century. And that's just in our recent Swedish history. People have been living on tropical beaches for at least a million years.

When do humans evolve to the point when we can just say there was an oceanographer called Marie Tharp without adding 'woman' into the sentence?
@sedg83 Жыл бұрын
Well the story was about how she wasn't allowed to go to sea because that was back in the day when they wouldn't let women on the expeditions, so she managed to discover something without even actually being there just by analyzing the data her male colleagues returned with while she was excluded, so her being a woman is relevant to the story.
@crashh-course Жыл бұрын
what's wrong with the word woman? as the other comment says, it's really relevant. i don't see how it's a problem.
@tycol322 Жыл бұрын
I think it depends. For modern day i say we should stop with all of the descriptors. The first female, the first black man to, the first etc. Just stop cause it feels, to me, like justified racism/seismic. Like saying "yes that's great you did that but let the real men show you how it's done" But for historical happenstance we should keep it. Moments in history when being a woman and reading could get you killed or being black barred you from pissing in anything but a bush. When it was really breaking barriers. Not applauding mediocrity. The first woman to break the land speed record? Okay why not just say the Land speed record was broken. It's not like we keep multiple records for every race and sex.

@sallystang58854 ай бұрын
There were plenty of staged things with Stephen, as well. All those magic tricks. The science experiments. The dancing robot. The two people with their un-knitting machine. The "spend a penny" and "elephant in the room" bits. I think after a certain amount of series, they needed to break up the Q&A format more and more often, otherwise it can be pretty dry and limited to a certain demographic. I loved Stephen and the early series, but I disliked how Alan always had to play the fool and the (mostly) white boys club. I appreciate the playfulness of the later series and that Alan has been unleashed more. Even so, after watching series U on Britbox, things are getting a bit tired again. They have five more years before the end of the alphabet. Maybe one more host change? Or perhaps Alan can move along? They could use an injection of something more to make it to the end.
