Qka is a long-form ambient piece I wrote and recorded over the course of two weeks while in Keuka Lake, in upstate New York. It was created using a fixed set of technology: My Buchla Skylab modular synth, reverb and delay plug-ins from Valhalla DSP, and Reaper running on a laptop. Reaper was used as a recorder and mixer, with some minimal editing of the material.
It's rare that I have the focused time to really delve into an instrument and explore it deeply. The Skylab is, of course, a very deep instrument that will be challenging me for many years to come. I did learn that there are some modules that don't resonate with me as well as others do. My intention will be to replace the 285e Frequency Shifter / Balanced Modulator and 251e Quad Sequential Voltage Source with a 250e Dual Arbitrary Function Generator when time permits - but that is part of the...well, modular part of exploring modular!
