“GAG” is an acronym for the Polish phrase Gorniczy Agregat Gasniczy, which means “Mine Fire Extinguisher”, an apt phrase as this apparatus has been used to put out fires in several mines in Australia, New Zealand, Eastern Europe, United States and South Africa.
The jet inertisation apparatus is designed to inject an exhaust gas product that contains a low
oxygen content, below that required to support combustion. The product is injected under
pressure and at a high rate, which can make it an effective tool to reduce the possibility of
explosion and to recover underground coal mines that have caught on fire.
This video explains how mine intertisation works using the GAG unit.
